CAKES and biscuits have always been my weak point.

In fact, I gave them up for Lent, but when I was asked to sample the puddings at http://www.dialmydessert.co.uk/, of course my duty to write this accurately had to come first.

So, with a little bit of guilt, I didn’t just break Lent, I completely smashed it, by trying not just one, but five different dishes.

In short, I fell completely off the wagon.

My favourite, without a doubt, was the ‘create your own’ cheesecake (£2.50), which had a delicious creamy texture and a tasty biscuit base. The best bit though was the toppings I had chosen, which included Maltesers and chocolate sauce – well done me, I thought.

Following closely behind the cheesecake, in second place, was the chocolate fudge brownie (£2.95).

It had a rich velvety topping, and the cake itself had a soft, fresh texture. I would have liked a few nuts in with it, but other than that it was delicious.

Missing out on second place by a margin was the praline bubble (£4.25), for anyone who has ever eaten the Thornton’s Continental selection, it was like a giant version of the Viennese Truffle.

This treat was made of chocolate mousse on a sponge base, but was a bit too sickly to finish on my own. My boyfriend was more than happy to eat the other half though.

In joint fourth place (and only because they didn’t involve any chocolate, which is a must with desserts for me) were the lemon meringue dome (£3.50), and the blueberry and lime pebble (£3.95).

These, like the other desserts, tasted like they had just been made. The lemon meringue dome was zingy yet sweet, while the blueberry and lime pebble delivered a moreish flavour. For anyone that enjoys a fruitier pudding, these are for you.

So that was how I broke my Lent promise. You will be pleased to know that after that massive five dessert slip-up, I resumed my fast straight away.

But now that Easter Sunday has passed, it won’t be long until I’m dialling for another dessert. – EMMA DUNN
