BASILDON AC’s under-17 and under-20s teamed up with Newham & Essex Beagles for the first time this season in their UK Development League opener.

The Basildon athletes in the Beagles team were particularly dominant in the middle-distance events, with a string of victories being chalked up.

On the men’s side, George Elliott was a comfortable winner in the under-17 800m (2m 1.45s), Adam Houchell won the under-20 1,500m (4m 12.80s), Dan Ashley was first in the under-17 1,500m (4m 21.74s) and Joe Kidd took the honours in the under-17 1,500m steeplechase (5m 38.68s PB).

For the women, Kaylee Dodd won the under-20 1,500m (4m 42.76s), Emma Houchell the under-20 3,000m (11m 22.29s) and Emily Bullis the under-20 1,500m steeplechase (5m 19.86s). Bullis, who also got a PB in the 400m (63.82s), went on to run a personal best of 5m 15.70s for the steeplechase in Kent on Wednesday night.

Back in Newham, there were B-string wins for Lawrence Willmore (U17 1,500m 4m 22.62s PB) and Laura Kidd (U20 1,500m steeplechase 6m 18.78s).

There were PBs too for Ben Haynes (U17 800m, 2m 15.39s) and Brandon Thorpe (U17 1,500m 4m 39.20s PB) while Gemma Archer-Haley (U17) got a PB in the 800m (2m 29.93s) and then did the 1,500m too (5m 28.97s).

In the sprints, Jack Avery won the under-20 men’s 400m hurdles in 61.55s and also got a PB in the flat 400m (52.01s). Team-mate Lewis Beard won the under-17 400m hurdles in a PB of 63.20s.

In the field, Parama Obi won the under-17 men’s triple jump in 12.70m while David Abiona won the B-string under-20 men’s event in 12.73m. In the throwing events, Aaron York (U20) got a PB in the shot (8.36m) while other PBs went to Katherine Ellis (U20 hammer, 30.15m) and Jemma Pemberton (U20 javelin 29.77m).

CHELMSFORD TEENS PICK UP VICTORIES IN NEWHAM

BILLERICAY pair Rosa Prideaux and Terry Lucas and Canvey’s Jodie Judd were all A-string winners for Chelmsford AC in the UK Development League match at Newham.

Prideaux stormed to a win and a new personal best in the under-17 women’s 300m while Judd picked up two A-string victories in the 1,500m (5m 3.79s) and the 3,000m (10m 55.89s).

Lucas took the honours in the under-20 men’s long jump (6.93m)  while Great Britain international Moesha Howard, a former pupil at Futures College, Southend, got her summer campaign under way by winning the under-20 women’s 100m hurdles in 14.65s.
