I SUPPORT Bolton Council’s decision to prioritise protecting vulnerable people’s services and spend less on other services as they have to implement the hideous government cuts.

But it seems there are vulnerable people being affected by cuts decisions at Greater Manchester level who live in Bolton.

Karen Marshall and others living more than six miles from their care centres can no longer use Ring and Ride.

If Ring and Ride is for people who struggle to use public transport and for people who cannot use public transport because of the level of assistance they need, it seems a shame that we are hearing about Karen, who cannot use public transport, losing her help.

In a press statement the managing director of GM Accessible Transport Ltd (GMATL) said he “appreciates that unfortunately some passengers will be affected by the decision (arbitrary six-mile cut off) and these will be included in a six month review”.

I prefer the action in the minutes of the meeting of Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), chaired by Cllr Sir Peter Smith only at the end of March.

The Minutes 56/14 Review of Accessible Transport Services include the suggestion that “the work should also look to support people through transition as a result of any changes made to services”.

It was resolved that officers prepare a further report on this issue for the GMCA meeting in June. We need the council leaders to review the GMATL action again.
