DEAF people in Worcestershire and those with hearing problems are being reminded to make sure they have the right kind of smoke alarm.

As part of next week’s Deaf Awareness Week Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) is reaching out to people with hearing problems to make sure they have the proper system to alert them if a fire breaks out in their homes.

It is estimated one million adults in the UK are unable to hear an ordinary smoke alarm.

Alarms are available with features including strobe lighting, vibrating alarms as well as small wearable pagers.

HWFRS station commander for community safety Alan Haley said it was vital not only for deaf people and those with hearing problems to make sure they had the right alarm but also to ensure they were tested properly.

“Many people with hearing loss could be at serious risk if they don’t have the right alarm in place,” he said.

“A specialist alarm system provides valuable time to escape from a house blaze.

“Without it, lives could be lost.

“Anyone unsure about the alarm they need should contact the community safety department for advice and to see if they would qualify for a free home fire safety check on 0800 032 1155.

“We are here to help make sure your home is as fire safe as possible.”
