Brett Ormerod celebrates his 38th birthday today.

Ormerod was set to join Wigan when Saints boss Gordon Strachan gazumped the northern side with a £1.75m bid and brought him to the Premier League in December 2001.

Never seeing himself as an out-and-out striker, he set up many a goal for James Beattie, managing to hit 19 himself for Saints.

He played 116 games, of which 42 were substitute appearances, and left the club in January 2006.

He later rejoined his first club, Blackpool, and went on to create history by scoring in all of the top four divisions for the club.

Ormerod’s last club was Wrexham, where he was released last April.

He spent part of pre season trying to win a contract at Accrington, who were then managed by his former Saints strike partner Beattie.

Matthew Paterson celebrates his 25th birthday today.

Educated in Fareham, he made his debut for the first team in 2008/09.

His most notable moment came when he was sent off in that season’s televised FA Cup third round tie against Manchester United at St Mary’s.

He scored his first goal for the club the following month in a 3-0 win at Ipswich during Mark Wotte’s time in charge.

Paterson grabbed Saints’ opening League One goal the following season, in a 1-1 home draw with Millwall, but the following Januray was on his way to Southend.

After spells with Burton and Aldershot, he now plays for Gosport Borough and recently hit a hat-trick in a 7-0 FA Cup win against Larkhall.
