Nathaniel Clyne reflected on a memorable ten days for him, after following his first two England caps with a late goal in Saints’ 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

The right-back emphatically converted Ryan Bertrand’s cutback in the 81st minute to salvage a point for Ronald Koeman’s side and extend their unbeaten Premier League run to five matches.

Clyne’s strike marked a fine return to action for his club, having starred on his England debut in a 3-1 win against Slovenia, at Wembley, before turning in another impressive display in the 3-1 victory away to Scotland last week.

“It’s been a great week for me,” he said. “I’m happy with the way my career’s progressing and going, and hopefully I can get better and be the best player I can be.”

While Clyne admitted it was “very frustrating” not to get another victory, he said the team were satisfied with a point in the end, given how the game had panned out.

“We came here definitely looking for the win, and we didn’t get that,” he said.

“We conceded a sloppy goal, which is not like us, but we regrouped well.

“I thought we played well, we kept the ball, we probably could have created more chances, but we’re happy with the point, and we’ll take it.”

Clyne also had praise for his fellow full-back, Bertrand, who produced a superb piece of work to set up his equaliser.

“He’s come in, he’s done ever so well, he’s helped the defence out massively – we’ve kept a lot of clean sheets – and going forward on the attacking side he’s set up a few goals and he’s scored goals as well,” said Clyne.

Saints’ attention now turns to a mouth-watering run of fixtures, with their next three games seeing them play Manchester City at home, Arsenal away and Manchester United at home.

“We’re buzzing for it,” said Clyne. “There’s big games coming up thick and fast.”
