The outside footballing world is finally taking Saints seriously after their win at Manchester United, but Ronald Koeman has pointed his team’s belief stems from a great season rather than one result.

The victory at Old Trafford which lifted Saints back above United and into third place has captured the imagination, as suddenly the country start to believe they are there on merit.

Those who have watched Saints over the last few months already knew that, and Koeman was keen to confirm that the team’s confidence has been hard-earned.

He said: “No, it is not about winning against Man United. I think we showed all the season our qualities.

“Of course, after some defeats against the big teams it was important to win one point against Chelsea and to have the feeling to win against Arsenal.

“Okay, we had Chelsea at home, Arsenal at home, Man United away and got seven out of nine points.

“Of course, that makes good belief for the players but we know we have to fight, have to work hard to continue this, what we are doing.

“We know that but, okay, it is no problem.”

Saints are back to league action again for tomorrow’s trip to managerless Newcastle with Koeman adamant that the lack of a permanent successor for Alan Pardew won’t make them a softer target.

“No, I don't think it is a good time or a bad time (to play Newcastle). Every game is different,” he said.

“They play at home, they have had some defeats in the last few weeks and, for sure, they will have some fans feeling about the 4-0 that they got in Southampton.

“But we know they are a strong team at home. They beat Chelsea at home, but it is not easy to beat Southampton.”

Koeman has again reflected on the amazing campaign Saints are enjoying and wants to press ahead in all competitions.

“Of course, I am a little surprised, yes,” he admitted.

“Yes, of course, it was difficult in the pre-season but when we had the team ready with the qualities and players we brought into the squad, I was happy, I was confident we could have a good season, but not to be third on the table after 21 games.

“Of course I am a little bit surprised.”

He added: “I think in the last four or five games in the Premier League we are still in this position then maybe we will say that the league is most important, but we like to win every game and take it very seriously.

“I made two changes (for Ipswich) – it was Pelle and Steven Davis. Elia was not available, which was a pity because he needs to play, needs minutes to have that rhythm which is important to play at his level.

“We will see what happens in the next few weeks.”
