IT was hailed as a masterclass - now Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has been honoured for his side's famous win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Koeman has won the LMA Performance of the Week award after a five-man panel agreed Saints' magnificent win was the pick of last weekend's results.

It was the club's first league win at Old Trafford in 27 years.

The panel compromised of LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett, Barry Fry, and former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

He has received a specially commissioned trophy made by silversmiths Thomas Lyte of London.

It is his second award of the season following Saints' 8-0 thumping of Sunderland last October.

The award comes in a week when Saints also progressed in the FA Cup, beating Ipswich Town in a replay on Wednesday night.

A spokesman for LMA said: "On Sunday afternoon Southampton showed why they have the best defensive record in the top-flight this season by denying Manchester United any chance of a goal and ended The Reds undefeated sequence with a 70th minute strike which sealed their fifth win away from home which moved them above United into third place in the table."

Koeman confirmed the award on his Twitter account this afternoon.

He tweeted: "Performance of the Week Award! Thank you #LG and #LMA"
