AWAY the lads!

Saints are aiming to rack up a remarkable tenth away victory of the season at Newcastle today.

Last Sunday’s historic win at Old Trafford was not only the club’s first league success at the stadium for 27 years ... it was also Saints’ fifth on their travels in the Premier League under Ronald Koeman.

He had previously masterminded wins at West Ham, Swansea, Hull and Crystal Palace.

Wednesday’s copycat 1-0 victory at Championship high-fliers Ipswich in the FA Cup third round replay was the club’s fourth away cup win of the campaign.

They had previously won away in the League Cup at Millwall, Arsenal – where they had not won in league or cup since 1987 – and Stoke City.

Ironically, given Saints have now won nine away games in 15 attempts, they lost at the lowest-ranked club they have played – League 1 Sheffield United in the quarter finals of the League Cup.

Saints are closing in on a new top flight record in terms of club away wins in a season.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, they managed a record-equalling seven last term.

That was the same amount as Saints won in both 1983/84, when they finished runners-up, and 1991/92.

In 37 previous top flight campaigns, they have only managed more than their current five wins on five occasions.

Apart from the three lots of seven wins, they also won six in both 1984/85 and 1987/88.

Adding cup ties to the total, Ian Branfoot’s 1991/91 Saints hold the record of most away wins in a top flight season.

Saints won 11 away games outright in league and cup that term, three on their way to reaching the Zenith Data Systems Cup final.

If you include an FA Cup penalty shoot-out success at Old Trafford, Saints won 12 on their travels.

Koeman’s men still have nine league games left this term, plus potential FA Cup ties.
