A Daily Echo fans poll has revealed the majority want Ronald Koeman to sign a new striker before the current transfer window slams shut.

More than 1,500 people voted in the poll and of those 52 per cent called on the Saints boss to strengthen his attacking options for a Champions League place push.

At present, Graziano Pelle has started every league game this season as Saints’ central striker.

Koeman also has Shane Long to call on, and he played down the middle in the recent FA Cup win at Ipswich.

After that, he has few options.

Koeman has been linked with one of his former Feyenoord forwards, John Guidetti.

The 22-year-old is currently on a year-long loan from Manchester City to Glasgow Celtic.

Celtic have agreed a £2m deal with City to sign the player permanently, but Guidetti has yet to commit himself.

The Swede was signed by Koeman on a season long loan at the start of the 2011/12 Dutch League season.

Then only 19, Guidetti struck 20 times in just 23 Erevidisie appearances, including a hat-trick in a 4-2 win against eventual champions Ajax.

Despite that form, he has never played a competitive league for City.

He spent a short loan spell with Stoke in the second half of last season, but failed to score in six sub appearances.

He netted 11 times in his first 12 league and cup outings for Celtic this term, but has not scored in his last six appearances.

Koeman is not planning to panic buy in the current transfer window, and has so far brought in only Eljero Elia on loan.

But the Saints boss could be tempted to add to his striking options if the right player became available at a good price.

Elsewhere in the poll, 21 per cent of fans think Koeman should sign a central midfielder this month and 15 per cent believe a new centre half is required.

Only six per cent want to see any more wingers/attacking midfielders added, while just five per cent are keen for Koeman to bring in a new full back.
