Saints U18s are through to the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup after beating Everton on penalties.

It was a remarkable feat for the young Saints, who were away to a highly-rated Everton side which contained players with first-team squad experience.

And it was Saints who took the lead at Goodison Park, with Kyle Clinton hooking home Niall Mason’s low corner early in the second half.

They held firm until the 82 minute, when the impressive Michael Donahue levelled the scores, following up after Saints keeper Harry Isted had parried a drive from Everton’s Harry Charsley.

Saints came under further pressure in extra time, with Isted called into action again to save from Jonjoe Kenny, and Mason making a last-ditch tackle to thwart a strike on goal.

The tie had to be decided to a tense penalty shootout, which saw Everton take a 3-2 lead before Kyle Clinton’s attempt was parried away.

But Isted saved the next shot, from Thorniley, and Will Wood blasted home to level the shootout at 3-3.

Kenny and Williard both netted, but then Isted again was the hero, saving from Graham.

It meant Joe Lea had the chance to win the match, and he made no mistake, rolling his penalty home.

Anthony Limbrick’s young side will be at home to Leicester in the next round of the FA Youth Cup.
