Two of Saints’ young guns put more than 50 pupils at a Southampton school through their paces.

James Ward-Prowse and Matt Targett visited St Mary's Primary School to kick off the Together for England Roadshow.

The Saints duo, who have become first-team regulars under Ronald Koeman, delighted Year Six pupils by laying on a skills session with the children outside the school.

They then turned their hands to being art critics and judged an England-themed poster designing competition.

The fun-filled day was finished off as the duo took part in a question and answer session, where they gave pupils an insight into their life as footballers.

The roadshow was the first in a series of monthly events being held by the FA to strengthen the Three Lions’ relationship with communities across the country and inspire a new set of England fans.

Ward-Prowse said: “I think every kid growing up wants to play for England. That’s the ultimate goal and their dream.

“It’s good to come down and show them that the pathway’s here. For them to see an England Under-21 player, it shows that someone in their community who they’ve grown up around can achieve that.”

Senior communications manager for Together for England, Andy Walker, explained why the FA opted to host the inaugural event in the city.

“We chose Southampton because it is a prime location. The club have a track record of producing talent at all levels, like Nathaniel Clyne, James Ward-Prowse and Matthew Targett,” he said.

“The event was fantastic and it was so good to see the players and the pupils interacting. No doubt they have inspired future England fans.”
