Steven Davis believes Saints’ win against Burnley made their point at leaders Chelsea an even better result.

Ronald Koeman’s side followed up their 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge with a 2-0 victory at St Mary’s, keeping them in the fight for the Champions League.

Davis said: “I think, obviously, we took a lot of confidence from last week, but if we hadn’t got a good result then it wouldn’t really have been worth its weight, but, obviously, delighted to get another three points, especially heading into the international break as well – it was an important one,” he said.

The midfielder, who had a key role in the second goal, producing a stunning chipped pass that set Ryan Bertrand clear for the cross that resulted in Jason Shackell turning into his own net, was pleased with the overall performance and says the team must continue to put pressure on the sides above them.

“To be fair, in the first half it was quite an open game,” he said.

“I thought maybe too much so, in terms of the chances we let them have as well, so a little bit disappointed with that, but I think second half we came out and we dominated a lot better and had a few opportunities to add to it, but we’re delighted with the three points and another clean sheet and, obviously, it’s just trying to keep the pressure on other teams really and do our own job.”

On the injury to Fraser Forster, Davis said: “It will be, obviously, a massive blow.

“Obviously, I don’t know what exactly the situation is just yet, but it’s never nice to see anybody get stretchered off.

“He’s been a huge player for us this year and, obviously, all our thoughts are with him and hopefully it’s nothing too serious.

“But, obviously, Kelv came in under difficult circumstances and did really well. That’s why you need a squad of players as well.”

Fellow midfielder Dusan Tadic added: “It was really important three points. We expect three points and we get three points.

“In the end we deserved to win. We were the better team and we deserved to win.”
