Saints are still searching for their first win in pre-season after suffering another two defeats in Austria.

Ronald Koeman’s men finished last in the four team Audi Quattro Cup after being beaten by Valencia and Red Bull Salzburg.

Though Koeman will not be concerned by the results at this early stage of pre-season, especially at it was the first 45 minutes of action this summer for his international players, he will want to see big improvements from his squad when they next take to the pitch against Gronigen in Holland.

Saints, who went into the game on the back of a 5-4 defeat to RB Leipzig on Wednesday night, slipped to a 1-0 defeat in their opening match of the tournament as Pablo Piatti scored the only goal of the game for Valencia on 22 minutes.

Saints did put in a reasonable enough performance and were particularly unlucky as two headers in a matter seconds from Sadio Mane and Jose Fonte rattled the Spaniard’s crossbar.

However, an entirely changed side was thoroughly second best in the play-off match against Red Bull Salzburg, who had lost the opening game of the tournament 4-0 to Werder Bremen.

Saints looked vulnerable at the back and goals from Havard Nielsen and Dimitri Oberelin gave the hosts a deserved win.

The team will now travel back to Southampton and spend a few days working at Staplewood before flying out to Holland for three further friendlies ahead of their Europa League opener on July 30.
