VICTOR Wanyama says Saints are refusing to set limits on how far they can go in this season’s Europa League.

The Kenyan midfielder will be at the heart of the Saints team that this evening welcomes Danish champions FC Midtjylland to St Mary’s for the first leg of their play-off tie.

The winners make it through to the group stages of the competition, and with Saints hoping to succeed in both European and domestic competition, Wanyama insists the squad are desperate to progress as far as they can.

“We don’t have limits. It’s game by game,” said Wanyama.

“Hopefully we are going to do better and we will see what will happen.”

Wanyama admitted that he doesn’t know much about the Danish league leaders, but said that Saints must improve after their 3-0 defeat to Everton at the weekend.

“What happened happened and we are looking forward to our next game,” he reflected.

“It is important also to get through in this competition.

“We are expecting a tough game.

“I don’t know much about them but they are a good side because to be in Europe you have to be a good team so I think they are a good team.”

Wanyama has a fine European pedigree, having scored for Celtic against Barcelona in the Champions League.

He is hoping to make more special memories with Saints.

“European nights are big nights and hopefully we can achieve something with Southampton, so I am looking forward to it,” admitted Wanyama.

“For sure scoring against Barcelona is good for any player, especially for me it was a really good night and one of the best moments in my career.

“I believe in our team, I believe in our manager also.

“I think we can do better.

“We needed to defend good, we needed to defend good as a team.

“The organisation of the team wasn’t good enough but we showed second half what we can do.

“If we can start every game like the second half it will be good.

“I think I said it before we have a good team and I believe we can do well in the Europa League with Southampton.

“We have a lot of experience with our manager, he has been there, so I believe we can go far.”

There have been reports that Wanyama is in talks over a new contract at St Mary’s, however, the midfielder insisted that was news to him.

“I don’t know about that. Maybe tell me,” he joked. “I leave that for my agent. That’s for the club and my agent. I just concentrate on football and do well. I’m good. I just want to work hard and do my best.”
