Shane Long will be aiming to help the Republic of Ireland take a huge step towards Euro 2016 when they host Germany in a potentially pivotal encounter in Dublin (7.45pm).

Martin O’Neill’s side are third in Group D, four points behind their opponents, who are at the top of the standings.

More pressingly, they are two points behind Poland, who they will face in Warsaw on Sunday in their final match of the campaign.

While Ireland will have their sights set on moving into one of the two automatic spots, they must also be wary of Scotland, who are four points behind them.

Gordon Strachan’s side host Poland tonight, before visiting Gibraltar on Sunday and could put themselves in a position to swipe the play-off berth if the Republic slip up in their two games.

O'Neill admits he would take third place now if it was offered to him.

"From where I'm sitting here this morning I'd take my chance in the play-offs if we can get into them, who knows what might materialise?" he said.

"We have got two very, very difficult games coming up. We have a challenge on our hands."
