Saints will monitor Victor Wanyama after the midfielder picked up an ankle injury in the draw with Aston Villa.

Wanyama was forced off in the second half of the game at St Mary’s to be replaced by Oriol Romeu, who went on to score Saints’ equaliser.

“I don’t know,” said Koeman when asked about the severity’s of Wanyama’s injury.

“I didn’t speak to Victor.

“He was a little bit with his ankle and we have to wait.”

Koeman admitted that he didn’t think when he made a double change, which introduced Juanmi alongside Romeu, he was expecting the latter to be the man who got the goal.

“No that was not the reason,” he explained.

“Juanmi more to put Juanmi in and both players came in on a good level and showed their qualities.

“Victor also the reason a little bit struggling with his ankle, but I think both players who we brought in the game did a good job.”

Koeman also withdrew Sadio Mane late on, but insisted it was not due to tiredness or injury.

“No, Sadio is never tied,” he smiled.

“But ok in the last ten or 15 minutes it was time to change a little bit with Shane.

“He’s a better header, a different player and sometimes you play your last card and hope maybe he will score. Sometimes that’s the reason you change players, that you hope another player, a different player, that he maybe score the goal.

“That was the reason to change the player.”
