RYAN Bertrand has urged Saints to complete another record breaking finish this season ahead of their trip to Swansea today.

Ronald Koeman led his side to a best-ever Premier League seventh-place finish last term and Bertrand believes it would an “unbelievable” achievement if they can capitalise on their recent great form and go one better this campaign.

“For us not to try and achieve that would be a shame,” he said. “We’re picking up good momentum at a great time.

“Like you see in most leagues, it’s not how you start the season, it’s how you finish. We’re in a good moment, hopefully we can keep it going.

“I don’t think anyone is getting carried away to say ‘let’s go for the Champions League’.

“It’s not something we’d sit back and say we can’t do but, at the same time, we have to be realistic.

“We had a poor first-half to the season. If we can finish above where we finished last year will be unbelievable.”

Saints need eight wins from their final 13 league games to surpass the 60 points tallied last term. They are currently seventh on 37 points as they head to the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.

It seems increasingly viable that a top-six finish and a push for European places is on the cards, with Saints on a run of four wins in five.

Most notably the defence has been incredibly solid of late, not letting a goal in the five games since Fraser Forster’s return.

Koeman has mixed up the formations recently, but each time the team has looked comfortable and confident operating in different systems.

“The initial change by the manager to a 3-5-2 formation seemed to fit really well with the players and from that we’ve drawn confidence in other formations,” Bertrand explained.

“Like the Arsenal game we have to change formations to suit that system.

“We drew confidence from that and it's a massive boost having Frase (Forster), as you can see. He’s made some world class saves in near enough in all the games.”

In that great run, Bertrand has played at centre-back, left-back and left wing-back, proving just how versatile he is.

“I enjoy playing different positions. It’s whatever helps the team. As soon as the manager mentions what position I’ll be playing in, I don’t mind. I put my mind to it and try and figure it out,” he said.

The 26-year-old will return to Swansea, who are unbeaten in four games, today where he made his professional debut while on loan at Bournemouth from Chelsea in 2006/07.

In that 4-2 defeat for the Cherries in League One, another familiar face, ex-Saint and now Swans midfielder Jack Cork, started for former Saints man Kevin Bond’s side.

“It’s always interesting to go back there. They’ve done better as of late,” said Bertrand.

“They’ve had a few draws in there. They’ve seemed to of turned a slight corner. It’s always a good game when we play each other. Both footballing sides –it’s always a good game.”
