STEVEN Davis wants Saints to stick together and build for great things next season after their superb 2-1 comeback win at Tottenham.

Davis netted his first Premier League brace for the club as Ronald Koeman’s men recorded an impressive win over former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino’s second-place Spurs on the penultimate day of the season.

The Northern Irishman was elated after Saints kept their Europa League charge on track and won their third game in a row as his double cancelled out Son Heung-min's opener at White Hart Lane.

“I don’t score as many as I’d like but it was nice to get a couple today,” he said. “Obviously it was an important win for us at a difficult place, so a really good team performance.

“After going a goal behind I thought we had a good reaction.”

He added: “Coming off the back of the Man City game, although we knew it was going to be a tough, we’ve kept it going and we’re finishing the season on a real high.

“Now we’ve got a home game to finish it all off against Crystal Palace.”

The experienced midfielder would like nothing more than this Saints side to stick together and go on to even better things next campaign.

Minus a few dropped points here and there and a dodgy run at the end of 2015, Saints have been excellent this term.

“We know we’ve got the quality to compete with the best teams in this division, but it was just showing that over a consistent level and I think we’re showing great signs of that,” he said.

“Hopefully we can keep the squad together and build on it again and then go again next year.”

A new contract for Koeman, who all the squad “loving playing for”, is also very important to the 31-year-old, and reckons that Virgil van Dijk’s new six-year contract is a massive statement.

“It’s good sign to see Virgil sign an extended contract, hopefully everybody can stay and we can go again,” he said.

On Koeman’s deal, he added: “That’s important. I think the manager’s spoken about that in his own press conference and said they’ll have that conversation after the season.

“There’s been so much change over the last few years... losing important players and obviously losing Pochettino a couple of years ago, but the manager’s come in and done a great job.

“Everybody loves playing for him, hopefully we can keep him and keep the squad together and go again.”

Saints must now watch on as top-six rivals West Ham and Liverpool play games in hand in midweek.

But Davis is just focussed on getting the right result against Crystal Palace on the last day next Sunday at St Mary’s.

“It’s a little bit out of our hands what happens elsewhere,” he said. “Obviously we’ve just got to focus on ourselves and hopefully get a good result against Crystal Palace and then who knows where that will take us to with other results as well.”
