SAINTS legend Matthew Le Tissier believes that Claude Puel should avoid making any “rash judgements” in the transfer market.

The new Saints boss will certainly be looking for new players, considering the club have lost Sadio Mane to Liverpool and Victor Wanyama to Tottenham already this summer.

However, Le Tiss has urged the Frenchman not to dive in head first, although identified a new holding midfielder as a priority.

“I guess top of the priorities will be to strengthen the squad for the season coming,” he said.

“We’ve lost a couple of players in Sadio Mane and Victor Wanyama, so I guess he will probably be looking at another holding midfielder.

“He’ll probably want to assess the squad before making any rash judgements. He’ll have a chance to decide where he thinks it need strengthening from his point of view.”

Le Tiss reckons that the appointment of Puel is much like that of Mauricio Pochettino’s in 2013.

He said: “People perhaps looked at Mauricio Pochettino, who wasn’t a household name in this country when he came, and perhaps thought it was a bit crazy, but that turned out not too bad.

Ronald Koeman was also a fantastic success here and hopefully Puel can take us on again.”

Puel takes over a Saints side that has just accomplished record-breaking campaigns two seasons in a row under Ronald Koeman.

It will be the former Nice boss’s challenge to push Saints further on and into the Champions League.

Le Tiss said: “We were just outside those spots last season, and I guess from the club’s point of view, regular European football is what they’re looking at, and I guess that will be the target again this season."
