NEW Saints manager Claude Puel will likely assess the players already at his disposal before delving into the transfer market.

Prior to the Frenchman’s arrival, Saints signed wide-man Nathan Redmond from Norwich City for £10m, but reports in his homeland suggest that Puel isn’t in a hurry to go shopping.

Despite the money available to him from the £34m sale of Sadio Mane to Liverpool and £11m transfer of Victor Wanyama to Tottenham, the former Nice boss is keen to carefully identify which positions need strengthening before spending Saints’ cash.

The 54-year-old boss was on the training ground on Friday to take the members of his squad not at Euro 2016 through their paces in the first pre-season session of the summer.

Undoubtedly, Puel will be well aware of the impact of Mane and Wanyama’s exits and will be keen to avoid any more departures with six weeks to go before the beginning of the Premier League season.

Once he has established what he feels the strengths and weaknesses are of the team he will venture into the transfer market.

Already Saints have been linked with a move for Hungary international midfielder Adam Nagy, who was a big part of his country’s Euro 2016 campaign, which ended in a 4-0 exit to Belgium in the last-16.

However, according to trusted sports newspaper L'Equipe in France, negotiations for the Ferencveros midfielder have been put on hold while Puel analyses his current options at Saints.

Hatem Ben Arfa, another to be linked with Saints, will not be reunited with his former Nice boss at St Mary’s, with French giants Paris Saints-Germain signing him on a two-year deal on Friday.

The 29-year-old former Newcastle man, who netted 18 times in Ligue 1 last term, was available on a free transfer and Saints were apparently interested.

Meanwhile, Jordan Amavi, Aston Villa’s former Nice left-back, is allegedly one target Puel is interested according to the media in Birmingham.

Yet, for all the speculation, it will not be until after Saints return from a training camp in America that Puel will be able to have a full look at his full squad together.

The likes of Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis and Republic of Ireland’s Shane Long are now having a holiday after the end of their Euro 2016 campaigns.

The same goes for England pair Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster, while Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares with Portugal are in the semi-finals of the championships.

Graziano Pelle meanwhile will hope to become the third Saints star through to the last-four when Italy face Germany in Bordeaux tonight.

It will then be for the trip to Holland on July 22 that Puel will finally meet Saints' international stars.
