SAINTS are set to seal their second major signing of the summer with Bayern Munich midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg moving to St Mary’s in a £12m deal.

The Danish midfielder is said to be frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities with the German giants, who won the Bundesliga last season, and Saints have needed no second invitation to swoop for a very highly rated young player.

Intermediary Soren Lerby was quoted as saying his client will move to St Mary's, and the Daily Echo understands the switch is expected to happen, possibly as soon as today.

Lerby said: "Yes, I can confirm that Pierre will switch to Southampton."

Saints head out on their pre-season camp to Baltimore today, and it is in the balance as to whether Hojbjerg will be signed in time to make the trip.

Hojbjerg, 20, spent last season on loan at Schalke, making 23 appearances.

The Denmark international was dubbed the new Sergio Busquets by Pep Guardiola in his first season at Bayern.

He also spent the second half of the 2014/15 campaign on loan at FC Augsburg.

The box-to-box midfielder certainly suits Saints' policy of signing young and hungry players.

"I want to leave and find the right place for me. I need to find something that fits me," Hojbjerg told Danish newspaper BT at the end of last season.

He added: "I look in every direction. It's about finding the right place. It'll show whether that's in Spain, Italy, England or Germany."

Winger Nathan Redmond was the first Saints signing of the summer after joining from Norwich City.

The signing of Hojbjerg makes perfect sense for Saints who were keen to add a midfielder to their ranks after the departure of Victor Wanyama to Tottenham for £11m.

They still remain keen to recruit another right back with new manager Claude Puel wanting his full backs to provide attacking width.

The club are still expecting one further sale to add to those of Wanyama and Sadio Mane with Graziano Pelle readying himself for a move to China.

As previously reported by the Daily Echo, the Italian striker is hoping to tie up a £13m move to Shandong Luneng, signing a three-year deal worth around £18m to the player.

At this stage Saints have no plans to sign another striker, with Charlie Austin having been recruited in January as the long-term replacement for when Pelle departed St Mary’s.

Saints have Austin, Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez as front line striking options for next season, with youngster Ryan Seager as back-up and Sam Gallagher also on the books.
