Saints could bring in one player on transfer deadline day as they look to resolve their right back situation.

The club record capture of £16m attacking midfielder Sofiane Boufal would have most likely concluded the incomings at St Mary’s had it not been for the injury to Jeremy Pied.

The French right back, signed as competition for Cedric Soares, has torn his cruciate ligament in training and could miss the rest of the season.

Saints had agreed a fee of around £2.5m with Everton and former boss Ronald Koeman for Cuco Martina, but have been forced to put the deal on hold with no further cover for Cedric at the club.

It is believed that Saints are working on recruiting a right back on deadline day, either permanently or on loan, which would allow them to press ahead with the sale of Martina, who cost £1m when he joined a year ago.

The move is seen as an excellent bit of business for the club for a player who doesn’t really fit Claude Puel’s style of play.

Other than that it is expected to be a fairly quiet day ahead of the window closing at 11pm tonight.

It now seems that Jay Rodriguez will stay at St Mary’s.

Both the player and the club had been prepared for a loan move, but the striker’s cameo appearance and equaliser against Sunderland has changed the mood.

Claude Puel said after the match that he would discuss the situation with the player and was open minded, and it is thought all parties have now agreed it is now best for him to stay.

Puel is understood to see Rodriguez as fitting into his system.

He also provides another valuable option while Boufal gets fit.

The Moroccan hasn’t played since April and is certainly not expected to be seen in first team action for at least a few weeks.

The only other unresolved issue surrounds Jose Fonte and his improved contract.

Saints offered their skipper a significant pay rise some weeks ago to reward his loyalty.

Fonte is believed to have ideally wanted another year on his deal, which runs until 2018, but a negotiation with his agent meant they thrashed out an improved contract.

However, despite that process having been completed a couple of weeks ago, the contract remains unsigned with rumours constantly linking the Euro 2016 winning centre half with Manchester United.

Saints are adamant that they will not sell Fonte, and it is currently viewed as unlikely that United will test their resolve on deadline day.

Whether that will persuade Fonte to put pen to paper on the deal remains to be seen.
