Charlie Austin suffered another shoulder injury as Saints crashed out of the Europa League last night.

Here, the Daily Echo looks back at the striker’s troubled history with that part of his body.

September 11 2010

Swindon striker Austin dislocates his shoulder in a collision with Saints keeper Kelvin Davis.

The former Poole Town favourite had earlier scored what proved to be the only goal of the League 1 game at the County Ground.

Swindon physio Dick Mackie says: “The specialist has given him a thorough examination and is fairly happy (he won’t need an operation).”

Austin is out of action until October 16.

March 2011

After just four matches for Burnley following his move from Swindon, Austin dislocates his left shoulder in training early in the month. He does not play again that season.

November 17 2011

Austin suffers another dislocated shoulder during Burnley’s 2-1 home defeat to Leeds United.

He leaves the pitch in tears and tells the local press a few days later: “I’m down. I don’t really want to be out but I suppose I have to be.

“There’s nothing I can do - I’ve done it (the shoulder) three times now. “I keep thinking ‘why has it come out again?’ and asking questions.”

Austin is out of action until December 10.

Summer 2013

Austin fails a medical at Hull City. It is believed his long-standing shoulder problem was part of the reason why.

At the time, Tigers boss Steve Bruce said: “It is a blow for him and a blow for us but these medicals are so stringent and obviously he has got a problem.”

January 28 2014

Suffers a shoulder injury while playing for QPR in a 2-1 Championship defeat against Bolton.

Austin lands heavily during the first half, but plays on and gives his side the lead.

However, a scan the following day revealed the extent of the injury, which requires surgery.

QPR doctor Peter Florida says: “He’s done some damage to the bone and cartilage in the joint, as well as the soft tissues around it, and will need an operation.

“He’s likely to be sidelined for a prolonged period.”

Austin is out of action until April 5.

Summer 2015

West Ham joint-chairman David Sullivan angers Austin by casting doubts over his fitness.

‘He (Austin) failed a medical at Hull a couple of years ago. They say he has no ligaments in his knee, who knows?” he said when asked if the Hammers were keen on signing the striker.

Austin hit back, saying: “For a senior figure at a Premier League club to insinuate that I could break down at any moment is an outrageous slur on my professionalism and the work that has gone into making me the footballer that I am.

“I scored 18 goals in the Premier League last season, which would not be possible were I feeling discomfort or pain.”
