ORIOL Romeu insists that Saints have the “right attitude” to thaw their frosty winter Premier League form – and is adamant they’re not heading for a battle at the bottom of the elite.

The defensive midfielder admitted Saints’ fourth straight league defeat at Burnley was hard to take, after the visitors dominated and performed well but failed once again to convert their chances.

The Spaniard reckons that Claude Puel’s men must continue to channel the winning style they showed in their triumph over Liverpool last week in the League Cup semi-final first leg, as they try to jolt their league form back to life.

“We have the right attitude,” he stated. “We are doing well coming from a massive game last Wednesday (Liverpool). It was good to keep going in that line [of performance].

“The main thing is to keep going in the same mentality (as against Liverpool) and keep doing the same job.”

Saints slid glumly into the bottom half of the Premier League at Turf Moor, but Romeu is adamant that they are not gearing up for a scrap for survival.

Instead, the 25-year-old is hoping Saints’ current position (13th) will prove lucky for them as they aim to build a platform to return to the higher reaches of the top-flight.

“We’d like not to battle or to struggle or fight for those things [at the bottom],” he said. “We have a good enough squad to fight for higher places in the table.

“Hopefully we can prove that and come back as soon as possible.”

You’d be forgiven for having déjà vu on Saturday, as once again Saints dominated, created numerous chances, looked in complete control, but somehow contrived to lose.

Eye rolls would have been shared between the shivering Saints supporters as Joey Barton’s deflected free-kick span past a rooted Fraser Forster on 79 minutes at a chilly Turf Moor.

“It’s hard to take,” said Romeu. “It was a difficult match. I think we did everything to stop them, but they won a free-kick. I went to stop their winger (Ashley Barnes) from shooting from outside the box and conceded a free-kick. From there, the ball was deflected and went in.

“Apart from that, everyone was quite controlled and we had a few chances to score, but we needed to take them.

“Looking back at the other defeats we had away, today we were a bit better, but we didn’t win again. We need to be better.”

Saints have not found the net in four of their past five Premier League away games, and Romeu is more than aware of their downfalls.

“When you lose you can point to so many things, but I think we always have to think we can do better,” he said.

“If they score once, you have to score twice and that’s what we have to do now – score more goals.

“We had chances to put it in today. In the first half there were good shots, and the second half with crosses, but the ball didn’t go in and they had one free-kick and the ball went in.

“They didn’t have many chances that I remember. I don’t remember Fraser (Forster) having to save us today.

“Looking at the chances, we played good and we need to be a team that puts its chances away, not one that doesn’t.”
