Saints have asked the Premier League to investigate what they believe is an illegal approach from Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk.

St Mary’s bosses are understood to be seething after a raft of stories from Liverpool connected journalists appeared at the same time yesterday afternoon stating that van Dijk wanted a move to Anfield.

With many of the stories also containing the line that the reason for van Dijk’s desire to join Liverpool was because of Jurgen Klopp’s involvement in his recruitment, Saints believe it constitutes an illegal approach.

The Daily Echo understands the club hierarchy met this morning to discuss what to do, and have taken the dramatic measure of reporting the matter to the Premier League.

The furore is also believed to have redoubled Saints’ determination to keep van Dijk, and rule out the possibility of selling the Dutch defender to Liverpool, who it is understood have not made any offer for the 25-year-old.
