SAINTS defender Jan Bednarek admitted he had mixed emotions after his Premier League debut.

The 22 year-old looked to have put Saints on course for three valuable points when he put Mark Hughes’ men 2-0 up against Chelsea at St Mary’s on Saturday.

It was not to be, but Bednarek said: “I was really happy that I could help the team and become a Premier League player.

“But now I am not because on my debut we have lost, and the result is the most important thing.

“It’s really nice to score a goal, but it’s about the score after the game and we’ve conceded three goals.

“We need to improve but I think we can get points in the next games.

“We were really compact and we worked really hard and that was the positive side of the game.

“We have to improve some simple things then we will be better.”

Bednarek is expected to keep his place at Leicester City on Thursday night – and is likely to face Chelsea again in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

“We have a lot of games, but I think we are ready for it, we can’t wait for it, and we will be positive,” he told southamptonfc.com.

Bednarek had only played two games for Saints before his Premier League bow following his £5.7m move last summer.

In August he played in the 2-0 home defeat against Wolves in the EFL Cup.

The Poland international also played the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 win at Fulham in the third round of this season’s FA Cup
