Mark Hughes has urged his players to stay calm during tonight’s make or break Premier League survival clash at Swansea.

Saints travel to the Liberty Stadium knowing that victory would almost certainly mean they avoid relegation.

However, a draw or a defeat would leave them facing an uphill battle to stay up when Manchester City visit on the final day of the season.

For Hughes the key to success is clear.

He said: “I think it is just calmness. You have got to deal with pressure, you have got to think clearly.

“Obviously, when things are flying around you have try and do the right things and you have to take your chances when you create them. For the most part we did that against Everton.

“We proved to ourselves that we have that capability, we just have to do it.”

He added: “Everybody is writing off the Man City game in terms of what we can take out of that game, we are not and we won’t allow that.

“We will try our utmost to get something out of that game as well but clearly when you are in this situation you want to be able to damage the teams around you and clearly Swansea are very much the team we have to damage.”

It’s a very short turnaround for Saints to try and recover, both physically and mentally, from the monumental effort they put in at Everton.

The players were shattered in every sense after being denied what looked a certain victory by Tom Davies’ controversial deflected leveller five minutes into stoppage time.

It was a considerable blow for Saints but they need to pick themselves up again for what is now the defining game of the campaign.

“We just mustn’t allow ourselves to be deflated by what’s ahead of us and what’s just occurred. We played well,” insisted Hughes.

“We are not down in terms of confidence and in terms how we are playing, we were damaged because we got so close to getting a significant result and a significant victory which clearly would have helped our situation but it is still very much in our hands.

“We will get this out of our system and go again. We are playing well so we shouldn’t have any apprehension about what is ahead of us.”

Hughes does have a few decisions to make with his team selection.

Maya Yoshida is suspended following his red card at Everton, meaning a probable recall for Jack Stephens, while Mario Lemina is unlikely to be fit after being forced off at half time through the hamstring injury that has plagued him for months.

“We will have to check on Mario. Mario is struggling with his hamstring,” admitted Hughes.

“He has had that before where it tightens up on him and he always feels that the hamstring is going to ping on him so at half time we made the decision. He wasn’t happy, obviously, but we couldn’t carry anybody.

“There is no point pushing him out there when he is only 60-70 per cent. I needed guys who are 90-95 per cent able to get around the pitch so we had to make a change but Nathan came on and made a real impact for us.”
