Cork: I'm loving it at Saints and want to stay

Jack Cork is hoping to extend his current loan deal at Saints.

The versatile 19-year-old has made a big impression at St Mary’s since his arrival from Premier League giants Chelsea in the summer, writes ADRIAN KAJUMBA.

Cork has made 21 appearances so far this season and his form has led to him being called into the England Under 21 squad for the first time, making his debut in the 2-0 win against the Czech Republic last month.

Cork, pictured right, says he is “loving”

life at Saints and wants to stay beyond January 1, when his current deal expires.

And that news will be a welcome boost for Saints head coach Jan Poortvliet, who spoke last week of his intention to try and keep some of his loan stars.

Speaking during the club’s annual pre-Christmas visit to Southampton General Hospital yesterday, defender/midfielder Cork said: “I am loving it here so far.

“Hopefully I can extend it (my loan deal).

“I have just got to see what everyone is saying and hopefully I can extend it for another few months.”

He added: “I am not exactly sure what is happening at the minute.

“I have spoken to a few people from Chelsea and they have said they are very happy with how things are going and they would be happy for me to extend it.

“I think my agent has already spoken to somebody at the Chelsea and said Saints want to keep me.

“He has not spoken to Frank Arnesen (Chelsea’s sporting director) yet, though, so hopefully we can try and get something sorted out.

“We will have to see what happens in the New Year.”

In the long term, Cork hopes to eventually get the chance to prove himself at Chelsea.

But, with a host of high-profile internationals ahead of him in the pecking order, if he returned to Stamford Bridge Cork would, in all likelihood, be restricted to reserve team action in the immediate future.

“It is a hard and frustrating situation, especially at my age,”

admitted Cork, who has yet to make his Chelsea first-team debut, having been out on loan previously at Scunthorpe last season and Bournemouth the campaign before that.

“If I do go back to Chelsea, there is a real possibility that I will be stuck in the reserves.

“When I go back there, it seems like there is nowhere for me to go and I just play in the reserves.

“It’s a massive club, Chelsea, and a good experience being around it, but you can only get so much experience from that and you are still in reserves, so its hard.

“So I will probably end up going out on loan again.”

I'd love to see Cork stay. Ideally with a view to signing him in the summer but Chelski won't have that.

He and Pearce have done well over the course of their loan periods and I really hope the club do all they can to hold on to them.

Would be great to keep him for rest of the season. He has a good attitude, works hard, has gained experience at lower level. I'm sure he will continue to progress. Unlike some players who feel that as long as they are on the team sheet they have made it. Even if that is only due to lack of alternatives.
David McGoldrick and BWP should look at him, and a long hard look at themselves!

I'm very happy with this comment, now Rupert/Wilde get your fingers out and make sure this happens!

He has probably been our best most consistant out field player this season and for Cork to be saying he's enjoying it down here says something good about how the club is being run. Only last season we had players openly saying that they were not happy and that they wanted to leave.

I think this and Lalanna's comments last week can only be good for the club. Now all we need to do is get a couple of the Arsenal youngsters on loan that has down so well in the Carling cup, then I can see us doing ok, mid table ish.

Unlike some people I am looking forward to the second half of the season.

Not so sure Kate. Chelsea have told him he has no future there so it is a possibility. Probably our best loanee at present.

I thought that all the doom & gloom merchants don't like kids. Surely we should let him go and get an experienced journeyman in his place?

(irony by the way)

Your right Chris 1991 and these are probably the people who last year shouted to get the old ones out in lieu of the kids. Can't see Chelsea letting Jack go as he has a great future ahead of him.

Much like the news, this comment is brilliant.

Apart from the first and the one above mine (jokers) what great posts.

He is a gem, but the problem is the better he gets, the better he will be for us, but will make him more of an asset to Chelsea. I think the least we can hope for is that at least we can get him for the rest of the season.

Yep, I agree with Chris 91 - I am sure I can remember some moans about giving the kids a chance, and now they have and I am delighted with how it is going. That is why I also agree with ourkid - bring on the second half of the season because it will just get better and better.

Keep on keeping the faith

What i like about Jack Cork is the way he glides around the pitch when he`s on the ball,he reminds me when he plays centre half of Mark Wright or dare i say it Bobby Moore. He has a premiership attitude to the way he aproaches games, you can see it a mile off,the guy is a class player.Similar in attitude ,though a different sort of centre back was Andrew Davies.I hope are young players learn from this because our players technique and fitness is up there with the best in this league,it just comes down to a willingness to work your backside off for 90 mins and fully concentrate is where we come unstuck.
