Search on for buyer who can save Southampton FC from oblivion

Rupert Lowe leaving St Mary's today. Rupert Lowe leaving St Mary's today.

THE desperate search for a saviour for Southampton Football Club has begun as its parent company Southampton Leisure Holdings entered administration today.

It has also been revealed that unless a buyer steps in, Southampton Football Club may not exist come the end of the football season in May.

Administrators from accountants Begbies Traynor took official control of the stock market listed company that controls the football club, shortly before 12pm.

It was two hours later than expected, due to a late expression of interest in buying the company last night.

However the unnamed party were unable to provide proof of funds before a 7.30pm deadline, according to administrator Mark Fry.

This morning, Saints chairman Michael Wilde, chief executive Rupert Lowe and director Andrew Cowen formally resigned from the boardrooms of both SLH and the football club and walked away from the business.

Press Conference - part one

Financial director David Jones is once again the only survivor, after surviving a succession of previous culls of executives at St Mary’s.

Administrators have also appointed a new director to the football board with no previous connection to the club to help with its day to day running.

It marks an ignominious end to the second chapter of both Rupert Lowe and Michael Wilde’s management of the club, with its shares suspended on the AIM junior stock exchange and its immediate future in doubt.

Video: "Saints fans have a role to play"

It also signals the start of a 24-day countdown to stop the weight of debt, which has now climbed above £30m, crushing the club into oblivion before the end of the season.

There are just 24 days to go before the club’s final home game against Burnley, on April 25, which is the last of three remaining home games, each of which is a crucial opportunity to fill Saints’ empty coffers.

Mr Fry said there was a very real risk of the football club having to fold if a buyer was not found by the end of the season.

He prompted the fans back to the stadium in an attempt to improve the financial position and to make the club as attractive as possible to potential buyers.

However, even if sell-out crowds return to roar their support from the terraces at St Mary’s, if the club hasn’t found a buyer by the end of the season, it could disappear completely.

After the Daily Echo revealed the shock collapse of the company’s precarious financial situation yesterday, wealthy Saints fans were immediately offering cash to help it stay afloat.

Looking for potential buyers

But the sums they are able to offer are likely to be dwarfed by the debt mountain that sees the money owed to Norwich Union on the £34m stadium standing at £24m, while the company owes more than £4m to Barclays Bank and has an array of other minor creditors.

Finances so bad - get £500,000 in from season ticket sales for next season to keep the wolf drom the doors! The players need to not take any money for the next 24-days - after all they earn in excess of the normal working man. Show the fans they mean business too!

This will definitely put thousands on the gate, proving once and for all that Lowe and Co were personally responsible for the stay-away fans and subsequent huge loss of income. An extra 5,000 every home game and we wouldn't be in this position, but that's what it's taken to get rid of Lowe. May he NEVER darken our doors again !

If there is still a club playing in any league.

That kind of support is exactly what has put the club in the position it is. You lot are clueless, and the fans not going are what has got the club into this state.

Charlie George's Lawnmower says...
9:36am Thu 2 Apr 09

The figure is a bit misleading as the club would have originally budgetted on getting Season Ticket income during March and April.

That would normally have brough in enough cash to keep the club going for at least 6 months.

If they start selling Season Tickets immediately, it will ease the problems quite a bit.

Charlie George's Lawnmower says...
9:39am Thu 2 Apr 09

Garry Akshun, you are the clueless one. The club's income has been driven down by relegation (down to Lowe), wasting money on Sir Clive Woodward (down to Lowe), wasting money on paying off a succession of managers (down to Lowe) and having major shareholders who REFUSE (apart from Crouch) to put money into the club (but they are still willing to take money out!).

Lowe's gone. He's history. What will all the internet Lowe luvvies do with their lives now!?

Well that is it. Thank goodness he has gone. I have now blown the dust off my season ticket and I shall be at the game on Saturday when I shall buy a programme, food and beer as well as maybe a bob or two in the shop. Things I have not done since Lowe’s return.

My wife has been singing The wicked Witch is Dead all morning

Ding Dong! The Witch is dead. Which old Witch? The Wicked Witch!
Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead.
Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed.
Wake up, the Wicked Witch is dead. He’s gone where the goblins go,
Below - below - below. Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and ring the bells out.
Ding Dong' the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it Lowe.
Let them know
The Wicked Witch is dead!

I personally think Lowe was like the Wizard of Oz for when it came down to it he had nothing to offer. It turns out he was just an inconsequential little man along with Askham and Wilde.

I suppose the pro Lowe brigade will now boycott home games. That is no problem as I know all three of them and they are no loss.

The reverse take-over was designed to line greedy pockets and not for the benefit of SFC so lets hope all involved in that little fiasco are now broke.

There are no more excuses we must all get to the games now and show that anyone who buys SFC is getting a proper football club with a great fan base. See you Saturday and lets hope a carnival atmosphere is present throughout the ground.

Delighted he's gone! Gutted its taken for the club to be pushed to the brink of ruin for it to happen. I guess that's the measure of the man. Anyway, enough of that, the club has just survived cancer. Its 'onwards and upwards' from now on. Well, probably downwards if we get the likely points deduction, but who cares? As long as everyone involved with the club is pulling in the same direction again I'm confident with our fan base, we will rise again from whatever lowly place we fall to over the next few years as a result of administration. Can't wait for Saturday. I've not been going because of Lowe, not something I'm proud of but I decided a long time ago that my head had to overrule my heart on that issue. Still, no such worries now, I'll be there this weekend and will be singing like an x-factor contestant in a semi final sing-off... badly but like my life depended on it.

So it's the fans' fault. If you say each 'missing' fan costs £30 then to get a £30 million debt that means 1 million missing fans this season which is 50,000 per game. No wonder SMS has looked so empty.

A full house for the last three home games all buying merchandise, programmes, food and drink will certainly create some short term finance that might just make sure this club is still alive in 24 days time. This is far more realistic plan of action than your mythical `massive injection of cash`.

Let's not go down this road again. The point is if the stayaways had not done so - the club would still be under the tenure of Lowe & Wilde - probably with Portvleit as well! I make no bones about it - I wanted Lowe never to darken our door last time - this time he thinks he's got one over on us the fans! That's a bit chicken and egg....The club wouldn't be in this mess if the appropriate investment had been put in place to bolster the team in the first place. It's a little unfair to blame the 'stay way' supporters who were reacting to this situation.
That's an excuse that the recently resigned board would have used to try and explain their way out of the current crisis. Leeds maintained their fan base (avg >25k per game) but went into admin....

A SAD DAY FOR SAINTS !!
Going into administration is not a good thing. The future of the club is not guaranteed. The league position is less sure now too. It is regrettable to be here. It is a last ditch process to save the club and NOT just a means to get rid of Lowe. Fans should not gloat. If only because he might come back and where will you anti-Lowes be then after your party.
People are now running the club with a view to settle creditors. It is only an option (one of the best perhaps) to sell the club for ongoing football. The administrators can do other things with assets if they see fit.

See you all at SMS.... I have a feeling it will be sell out!! CORY ps What happens to Lowe and Wildes shares..... any chance of them regaining power buy rebuying the club for next to nothing?
If ever they do come back in some way you can bet your bottom dollar the fans will not only boycott but make their feelings felt more than you can or they can ever imagine. Let's try to move towards safety, both in the League and in the stock-exchange, before the Wolves come knocking on our door, (which is on the 10 April!!)

do what Norwich do and sell cheap season tickets early. Sell season tickets for £300 and the club could rake in £6m in revenue - enough to keep the club going until the end of the season at least when hopefully a new buyer could be found. Surely a better way of raising quick cash than selling off valuable assets like players, traing ground etc.

The Exiled Saint says...

Let me see if I’ve got this correct.

According to the Administrator’s spokesperson on Sky TV a couple of minutes ago “Southampton Football Club is in serious jeopardy” and unless “support is forthcoming it may not last until the end of the season”.

He pleads for fans to come down to St Mary’s for the remaining games as he is of the opinion that it will demonstrate to a potential purchaser “that SFC has a faithful fan base”.

OK for far?

Now here comes the bit that puzzles me. If all those who have sworn to stay away until Lowe, Wilde and the Board have resigned, had instead continued supporting their club, then SFC would not have gone into administration.

True we would still have had Lowe and the Board, but we would still have Southampton Football Club.

Attend and the club survives; boycott and stay away and club fails.

As a season ticket holder who travels in excess of 12000 miles supporting the Saints both home and away every year, have I missed something here?

“Cutting ones nose to spite ones face”, springs to mind.

I’d better leave home a bit earlier this Saturday, otherwise I’ll get stuck in the traffic jams and be late getting to my seat.

Southampton's future is seriously under threat, according to the man appointed to run the club's owners.
Not just the points deduction and relegation to Division 1 but liquidation and out of the league.

I get the impression that the situation has to change. We cannot stay in administration. Better attendence now is a bit late. Worryingly, the administrator has made a preliminary conclusion that costs have already been cut (we alll know that). Therefore option 1 out of administration is perhaps a non-starter.
The main thing is a buyer coming in. But we should be a bit worried when you here the quotes ...
"The directors have tried to sell or seek investment for a considerable amount of time, which they have been unsuccessful in doing,"
They don't grow on trees.

I can't remember the last time I saw Saints fans in such a good mood, and we are knocking on deaths door! That says a lot about what we all felt about the board who should have been gone a very, very, very long time ago! I'm going to make a few points;

1st, who cares who is right or wrong about going or not to the game? I for one haven't been often the past three seasons. Being a student in London, being against Lowe/Wilde partnership and watching a team who I grew up watching, all those goals Tiss scored in front of me, I couldn't actually bare it. I'd say the past 5 games I have been to I have walked out very early each time because of these reasons and each time I say I won't go back. Now I will.

2nd although I'm directly contridcting myself as there is no possible way I can go (funds and study) we need a full house at Charlton. We still have our Championship futures to fight for.

3rd I'm sure the deadline to go into administration was March 4th (?) and to be deducted points this season, so if we get a deduction it will be next season, all the more important to stay up!

4th We have to do everything we can to make sure Lowe doesn't ever, ever, ever get his dirty, red and white blood stained hands on the club again. It's the blood of young fans who have grown up watching absoulte mediocre players and having to hear the arrogant man gloat about having a squad almost as big as Man utd etc.

I for one will do anything in my power to save this club. I have about £100 of my overdraft left until the end of April. That is for Southampton Football Club's if they so wish. Anything to keep us alive and alive without the so called businessmen who put us here.

Regardless of personal feelings we have to stick together, because we all agree on one thing, we love SFC and that is all that matters at the moment.

COYR!

This is why you shouldn`t be on here. The club is in this state beacuse of the people who have ran it for the last 12 years. No I didn`t want to move from The Dell but don`t forgot in the mean time Saints have blown around £20million on players like Delap, Phillips, Delgado, McCann, Ormerod (sorry Brett), Chala and other such wasters so the debt is about much more than SMS.

Get a life! Saints will always be around and will always have a fan base that supports their club what ever. Not so long ago, your team was nowhere with noone supporting them. Suddenly when the good times come you appear out of the woodwork. Someday you will all disappear again.

So the club may be out of business by next season? What supporter would not be prepared to put in £20 now for the guarantee of a handful of tickets next season? Or on a similar scheme. Almost like a shortened version of the season ticket on a money-per-game basis. This would resolve the short-term cash-flow problems and prove to any potential investor that us fans are here for the club, and will continue watching and upporting the club whatever happens, thus making it a more attractve investment.

I don't really believe this. There is an 80% chance Saints will cease to exist by the end of the season. there is no magic fairy godmother for this club. The economy is stuffed and they will just be a memory. We need 30 plus million by the end of the season.
Lowe shouldn't of come back agreed but neither should so many have walked away. Norwich Leicester, Derby, Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday have all had problems as well as Leeds. Yet their fans stayed true. It shouldn't have just been about Lowe, the club was always about far more than him.
I hope I am not right. Yet the Pompey boys are singing "Oh when the Saints go marching out" They aren't talking about the division. They are talking about oblivion.
Everyone is coming back for the last three games in the history of the club to say farewell. Then those who were part of the cause will walk away and tell themselves they did their part. Fair weather supporters, well next season they can go and mow their gardens or creep up and watch Reading or Arsenal play. With no guilt because there will be no club left. By the way no season tickets are on sale until the club is declared solvent.
What does the song say Too little too late. However you Lowe haters felt justified in staying away, you helped bury this club, now live with it. To me the club was all about my football team from the mid sixties as a boy until this dark and sad day and it will remain so even when it is gone, to the day i am shovelled six foot under .Thanks for many great memories Southampton Football Club.

Unfortunately my friend this will all fall on deaf ears. I have been on here all season saying not to give Lowe the power by preventing you going to support your local team but all I have got back on the most part is abuse. I personally would have never given Lowe the power to decide for me or not whether to go and watch my beloved Saints, yet so many sadly did.

There have been many comments as to the delight at the demise of Micheal Wilde and Rupert Lowe.
It would seem that few if any of the comentators have any idea about the financial fight that these two people have gone through in order to secure the club.
They will have fought relentlessly to stave off administration, not just to secure their own investments but to secure the future of the club.
If only the players had fought so hard, players who now expect an exhorbitant return for very little effort, the club would have attracted investment.
Of course if the supporters had maintained their support for the club then maybe, just maybe, invetors could have seen the potential for investing.
There are some who will remain accountable but then everyone is responsible.

Lowe and Wilde (and Crouch) own shares in the PLC, in turn the PLC owns the club. The administrator will look to sell the club and use the money to pay the creditors of the PLC.

Don't get too carried away that this is the end of Rupert. He could still negotiate with Begbies Traynor to fund Administration and end up the preferred bidder. That's what happened at AFCBournemouth with the previous chairman rising like a phoenix from the ashes.£350k was required with some up front to fund the Administration.

By the way, Begbies Traynor don't come cheap. Their top dog is on £305 per hour. That soon racks up.

Also be prepared for your better players being sold for a song. We had to sell Sam Vokes for £300k to the only bidder and the money just went on the Administration.

And if you are deducted 10 points if a Cva is not agreed with your creditors its a minimum 10 point deduction next season.

Us Cherries fans could write you a book about Administration and I sympathasise with your plight. Let's hope you survive and the pain is worth it to get shot of Rupert and Co

I think most people here are missing the poit. As a Cherries fan (and a banker boo!)I have been through quite a few admnisitrations...

The point is that the Administrators have a legal duty to get the best price for the club on behalf of the creditors - so they are touting the club around. However, what would happen if a buyer is not found? Well then Norwich Union and Barclays would be left with a useless stadium. So in reality, they will almost certainly end up doing a deal with the hightest bidder, even if its a low price. And the most likely bidders in the absence of big new investment? - quite possibly the previous owners such as Lowe etc.
