Irish consortium moves to pole position in Southampton FC takeover

A CONSORTIUM of Irish businessmen has jumped to the head of the queue to buy Saints after an eleventh hour bid, the Daily Echo can reveal.

The group is understood to consist of two people, who have £500,000 ready to put down as a deposit to gain a period of exclusivity.

The Daily Echo understands that has moved them to the top of the list, overtaking the previous frontrunners, the Matt Le Tissier-backed Pinnacle group.

They are thought to have arrived on the scene late last week and are already at a very advanced stage in negotiations.

Their identities are unknown but last year the Daily Echo reported that millionaire Irish cinema tycoon Tom Anderson had been close to making on offer to buy out former chairman Rupert Lowe.

It was said that the deal was brokered by former Everton chairman Paul Gregg and his associate Tom McLoughlin, but it came to nothing.

Anderson runs Ward Anderson, which controls UK movie theatres including the Leicester Square Empire.

Saints administrator Mark Fry also revealed to the Daily Echo last night that he hopes to announce a preferred bidder by the end of tomorrow.

Fry said he had more than one party in the last stages of negotiations and was hoping things would be resolved soon.

He told the Daily Echo: “We have got a number of people at the final stages and we are trying to get them all to get over the line.

“I am hopeful that it will be within the next 48 hours.”

Fry added the administrators were working “exceptionally hard” to secure a deal, which he said must be satisfactory for the main stakeholders.

Although the Irish group now appear to be favourite to gain control of the club, the other interested parties are not out of the equation.

The Pinnacle consortium is still desperately trying to piece together the final bits of the jigsaw for their completed bid.

They are understood to be very close, however, due to the serious late interest from elsewhere, time is fast running out for them.

That may spark them into completing their bid, but the final deadline is thought to be looming.

Pinnacle’s Tony Lynam, who has been managing the bid, said: “We are still at the table and still talking to the administrator.”

The Daily Echo understands Pinnacle are frantically trying to sort things out today, for fear they may lose the club.

The consortium fronted by Stuart Green and Marc Jackson is still hopeful they can gain control of Saints, while there is thought to be serious interest from another mystery party.

There is no guarantee that whoever is chosen as the preferred bidder will ultimately seal a deal to gain control of the club, though.

Although they will have a period of exclusivity, in which no other bids can be accepted, they will still have to tie up all the final legal and financial issues before taking over.

The Echo understands that Fry would not want other parties to walk away after a preferred bidder is chosen, in case a deal subsequently collapses.

In the global recession, I can't afford to buy a copy of the Echo. I feel the Echo are exploiting Saints fans thirst for news just to sell a few more papers. Considering their track record of getting nearly everything wrong regarding Saints, who really is rushing out to buy a copy of the paper today when one person will soon be putting the article around the internet anyway?

From the archives.......... Irish Tycoon In Frame For Saints Takeover - 17/02/2008

Irish cinemas tycoon Tom Anderson has emerged as the latest potential buyer of Southampton. Directors are in talks with a group of local businessman, but Anderson is close to making an offer for the near-30 per cent stake of the club's leading shareholder and former chairman Rupert Lowe. The deal is understood to have been brokered by former Everton chairman Paul Gregg and his associate Tom McLoughlin. It is believed that Gregg may also take an equity stake. Southampton has now been up for sale for 18 months to the growing frustration of its fans. Anderson runs Ward Anderson which took control of a dozen UK movie theatres in 2005 including the Leicester Square Empire. The Anderson family is said to be worth £105m. ....... could there be truth in this one. are these the "overseas bidders"?

I can't believe people are complaining about this. The more people trying to buy us the better. If some rich Irish investors are out there then it's fantastic news. And with the strength of the euro, Saints would probably be quite an attractive investment right now.

In fact, I've just got back from Ireland and you could probably buy Saints for the price of a couple of pints of Guinness over there at the moment. Bring it on.

erm..... it is a paper.... what do you expect, a complete copy of the paper on the Web? I think they would go out of business pretty quickly. Or they could charge for access to the site. However frustrating the situation is.... The Echo has got to exploit the situation, especially in the Summer... all they have is Cricket!

Echo now changed the headline to say "Irish Consortium" and still claiming it be an "Echo Exclusive".

I expect they will slowly update this page to drip feed in the entire story as they have it. My bet is they will "exclusively reveal that Southampton FC is a football club based in Southampton" next.

But if this takeover rumour is true, then that in itself, sounds good news

99/100 the Echo follows what is posted on 'the saints web' (google it if you havent been there before). And if I expect, the Echo do a little digging to see if there is anything in it, and if there is, they run it to print. Lazy journolism in my opinion.

Before everyone dismisses this lets at least wait and see what the outcome of this offer is. This was repoorted on Radio solent this morning, so maybe the Echo actually have an accurate story to report.

Personally, I would welcome ANY bidder to stop the club going out of business. If it is (and we all hope it isnt) Rupert Lowe, if he saves the club then lets just hope its third tie lucky. If its another consortium then we can expect a different approach.

In an ideal world....Rod Stewart buys the club...WGS is re-appointed manager...we win League One...blah blah blah...but i guess the best we can hope for is a consortium to make sure the club stays in business.

just a word of caution. in the echo
when the same imminent do they actually mean "umm whenever you fancy it really, before christmas"

360 hours ago:

A DEAL to save Saints could be completed within the next 24 hours, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Administrator Mark Fry is today due to hold talks with one of the frontrunners – believed to be the Matt Le Tissier-backed Pinnacle group – in what could be a decisive meeting.

Fry last night told the Echo that he hopes to align himself with a potential purchaser by the end of Wednesday.

That is, however, dependent on any late hitches to a prospective deal, with talks reaching a very sensitive stage.

Fry, left, revealed at the end of last week that he was in contact with two serious groups and added yesterday that he had received some late interest in the club.

He said: “We are talking to a couple of seriously interested parties and there are some late expressions of interest, but we are hoping to align ourselves with a potential bidder within the next 48 hours.”

Talks are described as being at a “seriously late stage” and it is thought an announcement on a preferred bidder could be imminent.

I would like it to be known that whilst I’ve been a Saints Season Ticket Holders for donkey’s years I have no connection with the mystery bidders.

However, should they be successful, I would strongly advise them to bar from St Mary’s, Crouch, Lowe, McMenmey and Wilde or any of the so called legends.

A total clean sheet is what’s required, as we’ve all been badly served by all of the above.

I suppose if an Indian business man brought saints and we joked that it was being turned into a curry house that would be racist yet if an english man brought a forign club and the locals joked that he would turn it into a english pub with the tradional vomit outside we wouldnt class that as rascist would we?
When abramavich brought chelsea and it was renamed by the tabloids as chelski and the fans wore those silly furry hats was that deemed racist???

Still, I don't know what is the more repugnant - the non-Irish on here who still feel that "Irish jokes" are funny, or the non-Irish on here who are so arrogant that they feel able to patronise the Irish by leaping to their defence.

From the Irish people I've known, they are naturally funny (more so than any so-called jokes)and can definitely fight their own corner!

That in itself kind of renders about 95% of this thread pointless.

Great article. Guess what? The Irish "interest" was just an enquiry. No bid, no promise of 500k. And how have the Pinnacle consortium been front runners up to this stage? They've made no bid. Whereas the Jackson-fronted group HAVE made a formal bid and are currently in due diligence. I thought journalists would at least attempt to substantiate Fry's claims.

Who's been at the club constantly for days? Jackson. Who's in due diligence? Jackson. How can Pinnacle therefore be front runners? Christ I feel sorry for the pepole who read these stories and have no other sources to rely on.

To the author: Pick up the phone and ask Fry some questions. stop relying on spin-generated press releases. He's playing you like a fiddle. Do some investigating and report something accurate for a change.

In a couple of years, when your spots have cleared up and you are old enough, you can sign-on and get some spending money, then you might be able to buy your own computer. And maybe then you can find friends on-line instead of being so desperate for attention you have to post comments about a Saints story.

Anyway, good luck with your new investment. One thing your club or its supporters will never, ever be able to buy though is class.

I've heard a rumour that the Irish chappies plan to tarmac the pitch and turn St Mary's into a "drive in"! After all the screens are already there and a big door to let the cars in.....

Jackson is sad idiot who bought his wife on on the internet lol !

Not got amy money to invest in the club and will use all Lowes mates to run it.

Thats why nobody is interested in the fat bankrupt mitty.

"Mark Fry also revealed to the Daily Echo last night that he hopes to announce a preferred bidder by the end of tomorrow"

The above is an extract of the article which was posted first thing on Wednesday morning.

I am led to believe that the Echo spoke with MF on Tuesday night and he indicated that he would be announcing a preferred bidder "within 48 hours" or as above, "by the end of tomorrow" which lets presume he means tomorrow being Thursday (48 hours = weds + thurs).

So, yet again MF issues a deadline which has gone and past. Why does this idiot keep doing it?!

MF OUT! Get a bloody administrator in who knows what he is doing and works to deadline!
