Andrew Surman leaves Southampton for Wolverhampton Wanderers

Andrew Surman has completed his move to Wolves.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who rose through Saints’ academy to become a first team regular, has completed the first major move of his career by joining Premier League new boys Wolves for a fee believed to be around £1.2m rising to a possible £2m depending on appearances etc, as revealed exclusively by the Daily Echo.

Surman has spent most of his life living in Bitterne and has recently had his first child but with Saints sinking to League One has decided the time is now right to move on.

The England under-21 international made a total of 146 first team appearances for Saints, scoring 18 goals, and has signed a three year contract at Molineux with the option for a further year.

He follows David McGoldrick out the exit door after he joined Nottingham Forest earlier in the week.

Kelvin Davis is expected to seal his free transfer to West Ham.

Well mixed feelings really - these guys let us down last year by getting relegated, so I guess they weren't good enough or perhaps motivated enough. Good luck to all of them - they got a new club, unlike us who may not have a club at all!

good luck to surman at wolves, i'll certainly be following your career with interest, shame the people running saints couldn't match your ambitions...

Good luck Drew, a good lad and a big loss to Saints.

The asset strip continues.

Look out for nice new furniture going into Mr Fry's offices in Southampton very soon.

Me and my young lad are so sorry to see you go Drew and I can`t help feling your have jumped ship a bit too soon, but I am totally bias of course ! Can`t help feeling that despite your undoubted talent you will be a yard short of the pace in the Premier League as you were never the quickest. But off the pitch you are a good bloke who always had time to talk so good luck !

I wish Surman all the best in his career being a local lad. But to be honest it wouldnt bother me if the whole lot walked out. They have proved they arent good enough or motivated enough to do a decent job in the red and white jersey. So if we do have a club come the end of the week and clear out top to bottom is required. Especially the playing staff. New start..

Just relieved that we've reportedly got £1.5m. Drew Surman, unfortunately, believed his own hype when he got picked for the Und21s and has been a shadow of his former self ever since. Last season he was diabolical and appeared completely disinterested most of most games.

I truly hope he recovers his previous form, but in the meantime it looks like "beaucoup pour nous" or "ziemlich viel für uns" depending which part of Switzerland you're from.

Hmmm... 'rats' and 'sinking ship' comes to mind. Very much like Phillips, Crouch, Beattie, etc., etc., etc.,

What are you talking about? Drew could have left this club numerous times over the last few years and has stayed put. He has waited to the last possible moment before moving to see if our sad situation improves.I know this will be a huge wrench for Drew and his family and I for one wish him all the best in the future and thanks for everything you have done for the club, both on and off the field!

Its all about family security = money. I wish Drew all the luck in the world with his career and have no hard feelings towards one of our own. Next season I will watch out for all Wolves’ games and cheer him on. It will be great for a Southampton Lad to show the Premier League what he can do. Remember you can the boy out of Southampton, but you can’t take Southampton out of the boy. Perhaps we will get him back when Saints return to the big PL COYR

Can't agree with this comment. Phillips certainly didn't want to stay and stated he didn't want to come to SFC anyway.

When Liverpool came in for Crouch he would have been a fool to not go. Look how his career has gone since then (forgetting his move down the M27), he wouldn't have become an England squad regular staying at SMS.

Beattie again thought his move would propel him into the England squad.

Drew Surman deserves his chance in the Premier too. Quality left sided midfielders are rare as hens teeth.

Kelvin Davis has a young family to consider so a move to West Ham will probably secure their future even if it means he'll be warming the bench.

These are professional footballers and deserve to take the chance when it comes. There are essentially hired hands and the whim of their employer same as most of us.

Thank them for their contribution and loyalty, especially Kelvin who took fearful stick on this website a couple of seasons ago, and wish them well.

This is bad news from any angle, between them McGoldrick and Surman will probably be worth seven to eight million on the tranfer market by next summer.

In short, we've lost out on the sort of money that would have bailed the club out if we'd had it last summer.

It's a shame but you can't blame these guys. I think that they're all going to clubs where they'll be able to compete for a place so all the best to them in the future. Kelvin for England keeper perhaps?!?!

It is unfortunate that a buyer with forsite and money could not have arrived to avoid this sad loss.

My bet is Lallana will be next, leaving us with a team of old expensive has-beens and kids.

good business, he's been a good servant and he's helped the club when needed the most. Too good for League 1, he deserves a crack at the top level. Pity it wasn't with us.

Its a shame to see Surman go, he's been a decent, reliable player over the years. I can understand his decision though, no matter how of a true Saint you are, the lure of the Premier League (and the salary that goes with it) is too strong to ignore, and it'll hopefully propel him on to even better things in the future.

bless you son and good luck. theres not many true saints left. soon you may be our only representative in the whole league thanks to the t0ssers at the FA. also good luck to all the other saints players wherever you end up, especially KELVIN, you shut up all the critics last year and you tried to wait this year cos you wanted to stay a saint even though you are clearly too good for this league.

RIP southampton fc
we will never forget.

Just been on Sky Sports and have read that A.S. is dissappointed at the situation at St Mary's.....did'nt stick around long to help us out of it though after helping to drop us in the sh#t in the first place.Everyone in this world has the right to say no but not footballers it seems. No loyalty anymore in football.I would have given anything to have been good enough to play for Saints when i was younger, would turn out now for nothing to help them out if required. Before you all say "but the club need the money and it's not his fault" just see it from a fans view...how many of you would be happy to kick a ball around for a couple of grand a week? I for one would and i would be extremely proud to wear the Red & White, and i'm not as local as him!!

I would like to give my BIG thanks to Drew and Kevin for there loyal support they gave to this club, over the pass years,
GOOD LUCK BOYS, I feel very sad they have gone because I honestly believe they would have been a great asset to the club in the coming season, we could have keep Drew and Kevin if Mark Fry got his finger out told Pinnacle they were out of time, and brought in the Swiss Group, the deal could have signed sealed and delivered by now, and we would not have had to sale players, so many thank Mark for losing our best players for us.

Don't worry, if Wolves don't stay up and you do well you can always come and play for another Premiership side. You'll know plenty of people here who decided to move onto a better club.
