Saints draw pre-season opener at Eastleigh

Saints opened their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw at Eastleigh.

Mark Wotte's men took the lead against their Blue Square South hosts at The Silverlake Stadium on the hour mark through a clinical Matt Paterson strike.

But Saints were pegged back by Ian Baird's side on the stroke of full-time when winger Tony Taggart squeezed an effort past substitute keeper Tommy Forecast to earn Eastleigh a deserved draw.

Don't miss Monday's Daily Echo for a full report and reaction from Eastleigh and Saints.

This is the daily mail story:

A billionaire Swiss family and a group led by football deal maker Keith Harris are battling to rescue League One Southampton from oblivion and make them one of the richest clubs in English football.

The identity of the potential owners being advised by investment banker Harris is unknown, but sources on the south coast revealed that the Swiss interest is backed by the Liebherr Group.
Close watch: Matthew Paterson of Southampton

Close watch: Matthew Paterson of Southampton battles for the ball duriing Saturday's pre-season friendly at Eastleigh

A third group named Gillico are also said to be in the frame, but the Harris-led bid and the Swiss are vying to complete a quick deal to save Southampton after the collapse of a bid fronted by explayer Matt Le Tissier.

Willi and Isolde Liebherr, the son and daughter of company founder Hans, are worth more than £2billion and if a deal goes through, only Manchester City's Sheik Mansour, Chelsea's Roman Abramovich, billionaire QPR owners Bernie Ecclestone and Lakshmi Mittal and Tottenham backer Joe Lewis would rank higher in English football's rich list.

The Liebherr Group already have links with the city of Southampton through subsidiary Liebherr Cranes.

Two years ago, £50,000 was donated to three local charities as part of a deal for the Swiss company to supply Southampton Container Terminals with two cranes, which were put into position last month.

Keith Harris is a director of Seymour Pierce, the merchant bank/business consultancy that Michael Wilde brought into St Mary's to find investors, given that once Rupert was gone, the seriously rich would be gouging each other's eyes out to throw billions at the Club - apparently; according the Keith Harris and his per PR man David Bick.

Didn't quite work out that way did it?
Seymour Pierce did not deliver did they?

However, Seymour Pierce have delivered elsewhere (Google for their Manchester City and Newcastle United involvement).

Well, it looks good on the Daily Mail website, hopefuly Harris has at last delivered - better late than never. But I think he owes Rupert a public apology after the Wilde debacle. He was heavily instrumental in giving Wilde, Hone, Oldknow and Hoos credability

Harris is no one's puppet. He is the the rich football fans use to buy clubs. He is a genuine football fan, having slammed the Man U sale because the buyer borrowed the money and had to put up ticket prices.. he hates that stuff.

Harris is genuine and admitted to the Mail he is representing The Swiss Group.

It is only the Mails Southern Sources that say its Leibherr but if Harris here then Mark Fry is wholly justified in expressing his confidence that a deal will go through.

Harris handled the Chelsea, Man City and West Ham sales and is selling Newcastle and Everton.

He is known as Footballs most influential man.

I've been out of UK for a long time someone please tell me that The Daily Mail's "Dan King" wouldn't print this as a wind up... in other words pinch me if I'm dreaming.

Someone ring Mark Wotte and tell him.. then get him to ring Barca and see if Thierry Henry is going cheap...

i was at eastleigh on your behalf. if anyone saw a bloke holding his 10 month old son (in full saints kit) and deflecting a clearance away from his head, that was me. oh and by the way,the daily mail is always one of the first with saints stuff due to good contacts here. although i can't stand the paper, my ma gets it. its probably true, and is prob the reason why the likes of stern john, rasiak etc are still lurking. the players will have an idea. oh and one more thing, i was at the gate at eastleigh, when a dutch guy came along and said he was on wotte guest list. when asked who he was he said he was on his coaching staff for next season... read into that what you will.

i was at eastleigh on your behalf. if anyone saw a bloke holding his 10 month old son (in full saints kit) and deflecting a clearance away from his head, that was me. oh and by the way,the daily mail is always one of the first with saints stuff due to good contacts here. although i can't stand the paper, my ma gets it. its probably true, and is prob the reason why the likes of stern john, rasiak etc are still lurking. the players will have an idea. oh and one more thing, i was at the gate at eastleigh, when a dutch guy came along and said he was on wotte guest list. when asked who he was he said he was on his coaching staff for next season... read into that what you will.
You make this kiwi git very happy.. Thanks

Wotte does sound secure.. wouldn't it be great if he suddenly gets a big budget and we get some top flight players..

Me too, slept badly. Had a dream about cranes. Weird. Oh, and also had a dream about those big earth moving trucks down at the docks near Millbrook station that have been there for ages. I also thought SFC was now known as Southampton Dumpers. Told you it was weird. Must have been the Pizza I had for tea.

It's been bad being 13 hours ahead over the last few weeks.. I'll be up until late hopefully Fry will release the news by lunchtime.. so I can hit the pit by 1am lol.. last week was a no sleeper.
This next 24 hours or so is going to be worth it..

In '76 as young fella flatting I yelled so loud when Bobby scored the goal to win the FA Cup my Landlord warned he'd throw me in the fish pond (winter here at the time)well....full time whistle went... I yelled again....splash... I didn't stop yelling for hours.

Now My son is 31..never been to Soton... wears Saints shirts everywhere and sleeps in the red & white...good well brought up lad.

Tirau Village pop 586... and 4 Saints.. with two in the next town.... I even married one in 2001.

Yep.. Saints is Blood Forever and distance and time never changes the passion.

So it would be great if 5000 turned up at Totton on Tuesday... give me one Kiwi Git Yell if you like... my uncle in Regents Park will laugh like heck.

Leibherr are a massive construction unit. I worked for them back in 1991 in a management capacity. They had the main contract for construction of Euro Disney.
impressions....
tough, no nonsense, fair, but expect results. They expect to achieve.
if they are the buyers expect an initial cash outlay.Once strengths and weaknesses of squad identified. They will provide if bums are on seats.
Expect them to give Wotte a chance to prove his worth on a fair playing field. They will look for stability and results. on the field and terraces.

If this is true and they do the business on Monday I reckon Mr Fry should have the keys to the city! Mind you, he would probably flog it!
He might try a flog it, but I bet it would take about 60 years, judging by how long it's taken to sell our club. Don't worry the Civic clock will still be there long after we ain't

If they start buying top stars I'll eat muesli everyday, take up yodelling and no doubt someone will bring a bluddy huge Alpine Horn to the games at SMS... Here in Waikato our local provincial rugby side is nick named the Mooloos (a cow mascot) cow bells are rung to great effect at the ground.. They make an awesome patriotic racket which gives us a huge home advantage.. oh yes it could happen at SMS haha

I was at the match, and was a bit disappointed that there were not more Saints fans there. The first half with our first team I don't think we had a single shot on goal. Rasiak didn't look up for it although Bart made some good saves. The second half we played youngsters and they were much better. The score doesn't reflect league status as it was just like a training game but I am feeling much more optimistic especially with the Liebherr talk. just keep everything crossed and hope we have some good luck at long last.

Why is a national newspaper like the daily mail breaking this story instead of the echo who, even though theyve completly missed the story on their doorstep cant even raise the will to comment about it let alone follow it up themselves. This is the most talked about subject in the city for years. We can expect another 'exclusive' front page splash on the riveting floride debate on monday then. Easy copy. None of that uncomfortable journalisim required there. Surely the only reason they stay afloat is through a lack of genuine compitition

Has to be said, the first team didnt look at all interested (except for Lee Holmes who looked hungry to get back into it, and dare i say it - Wayne Thomas, who almost earnt some of his £1150 for the day!!) Second half, the youngsters looked as if they are well up for league 1. Be interesting to see who starts the season.

Lol.. Morning coffee time then off to work here.. It's Money Monday today... now I just have to get through the working day for you to catch up. Tonight I'll glued to the pc and waiting for the news to come through... with a brandy and lovage ready for a little celebration.

I'm going to really saviour things..

The coffee tastes great this morning.

All you Saints reporters that went to Eastleigh.. thanks for the updates I'm really glad you went it must have been worth ten pounds to see the squad strut. When the others have signed contracts the insurance company will let them play.. Hopefully that will be for the Bournemouth game.

Mark Fry said it was imminent and the whispering threads say staff have been told to go in on Monday Morning. A true businessman always advises the staff first! Nothing worse for staff than getting news about their lively hoods in the papers. These guys are doing it right.

Is it just me or can you feel something electric in the air for Saints.

Lets enjoy it. My guess is Monday Lunchtime your time. Then for goodness sakes everyone get out to the Totton game at 7.45pm Tuesday. Enjoy it as a fun run and support Mark and his players.
