Lawrie: Fans should not forget their debt to Leon

LAWRIE McMenemy has urged fans not to forget the debt of gratitude they owe to Leon Crouch.

The former football board chairman has come in for a bit of stick from some supporters for his unconfirmed involvement in the Pinnacle deal which collapsed, wasting valuable time over the summer.

But Crouch has been responsible for personally stumping up cash to keep the club going when administrator Mark Fry may otherwise have had to liquidate it.

McMenemy, pictured below, Saints’ legendary 1976 FA Cup winning manager, thinks that now Markus Liebherr’s takeover is completed, Crouch’s contribution by putting his money where his mouth was and keeping the club afloat – when other former board members didn’t – should always be remembered.

McMenemy – a former Saints football board colleague of Crouch’s – said: “My initial reaction is after nearly 100 days it is good the club’s future is ensured because after I first spoke to Mark Fry, when he called me in, he did put the cards on the table and painted a picture of how bad it was.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

“Leon Crouch has got to be praised for personally keeping the club going financially from the end of last season until presumably the first money came in from the sale of a player.

“It should never be underestimated that if he hadn’t have done that, the a d m i n i s t r a t o r would have had no option but to finish the club.”

McMenemy says he has b e e n reminded of the significance of the club by the number of people that have approached him over the past few months to ask about its future.

That’s not only when he’s been at events locally but nationally as well – not least on Tuesday when a stream of people approached him at Buckingham Palace after he had been invited to the Queen’s garden party.

“The club has to go on. I’ve always said it’s an integral part of the community,” said McMenemy.

“The number of people I’ve had on my travels asking me how the club is, from taxi drivers to the man on the street to massive functions in London, is amazing.

“I couldn’t believe the amount of interest which reminds everybody we’ve had such a good name in the past.

“Hopefully that will carry on and eventually we will be part of the elite again in the top flight.

“I say ‘well done’ to the buyer.

“Now like everyone else I hope that the football side is concentrated on more now the financial side has been settled.

“Because after all, that is what the club is all about.

“We start with a ten point penalty and hopefully the right structure will be put in place and we will have players who are hungry for success and most importantly want to play for this football club.”

Too right big Mac, Crouch cannot be blamed for backing a horse which did not win and wasnt to know (like Le Tiss) that it was a lame horse either.

I do not blame Le God or Crouch who I as a fan am proud to have associated with SFC. It is him alone that stumped up his own cash to keep us going.

Cheers Leon.

If Lawrie says it's so then I believe him. Though Leon made some shocking decisions which he apparently admits, he seems to have been the one that got us to the point of sale yesterday without being wound up. If he wants to disclose how much that was maybe the kitty built up by the SOS and Saints Aid campaigns could be a thank you gesture to Leon. I was never a fan of his but if this is true we owe him a debt of gratitude.
Just a thought.....

Its true and has been acknowledged already by many in the threads here and we should be very grateful.

Sorry but with respect for the best of intentions, that gratitude does not extend to wanting any of the past board members anywhere near the future of the club.

I am thankful for the money that helped us sustain the administration period. It shows he is a true fan regardless of how his wealth has come about and what people feel he 'owed' the club.

I also think he should be rewarded with complete VIP treatment at SMS for the rest of his life etc.

However, i do NOT want to see him involved in the running of this club ever again.

I have never been a big fan of Leon, but it takes someone totally committed, regardless of whether they made the wrong or right decisions in a past life, to make this kind of gesture. Thank you Leon.

PS: I don't like the security word thingy, but mine is 'Rise-Hard'!! Ooo eerrr matron!!

Oh dear, the bitter Lawrie haters are out again.

All these "facts" about Lawrie's shares are lies.

Yes he did receive shares when the club was taken over by Lowe. His original shares in the club were transferred into the PLC ones.

But you only make money from shares (apart from tiny dividend payments) whne you sell them.

So come on Lawrie haters, show me proof of when and how much Lawrie sold his shares for??

And how many shares did he have in club when it went into admin? All of which ended up being worth £0.00.

As for Leon Crouch, he has never taken a penny out of the club. He paid invididuals for his shares in the first place. Leon paid for the Ted Bates statue. Leon paid some loan fees for players. Leon paid the wages of club staff for at least two months.

Either put up with some facts or shut up.

I think Leon Crouch and Matt Le Tissier should have a non-executive role in the club.

They've proven their loyality time after time, through good times and bad; in fact so has Laurie McMenemy.

They are true ambassadors for Southampton Football Club, the game of football and sportsmanship in general.

I think Ted Bates has some worthy associates in the hall of fame now.

How has Crouch "done very well"?

He built up, owned and ran a hugely successful engineering company in Lymington for decades. Building up his fortune and being very active in the local community (I first met him doing work at Oakhaven Hospice, years before he got involved in Saints).

If anything, his love for Saints blinded him to the fact that football contains some right nutters who are out to exploit and discredit you. Also, he's had to deal with prats like the ones we see here, spreading untruths about him.

Personally, I thank him very much for his time and money invested in Saints.

Two differances between Lowe and Crouch. Lowe has no Concience whatsoever, crouch does. When he realised how much him and the dark one had had from the club he felt he should put about 5% of what he had back into the club, lovely chap.

I hope all the old guard keep away from MY club and that includes McMoneybags and Le Tissier

Can't believe the flak Leon Crouch gets from some people. Fact is the club would wound up by now or subject to a higher points penalty if he hadn't coughed up the cash to pay players. And Kelvin Davis would be at West Ham by now. Fair play to Davis too for hanging on in there and showing some loyalty - very unusual to see that these days when most players are just chasing the best contract their agents can secure for them. Time for all the sniping to stop now - RL's gone for good we hope so let's all get behind the team and make sure it's a full house to get the first three points against Millwall.

Thanks Leon and thanks to Lawrie also. They have always looked out for the club and I'm grateful. I was fortunate to be a season ticket holder during Lawries years in charge. The best years Saints ever had. I find it quite shocking people are making accusations against Leon and Lawrie on this site. We should be lining up to shake their hands - especially Leon. I didn't see anyone else writing checks to keep the club afloat. He probably saved us a further points deduction. As for Lawrie making a lot of money over the years - so what. He deserved it, earned it - unlike Lowe who took all he could get and never gave a toss about the most important thing about a football club - the football!

I think its true to say that the fans know absolutely nothing about who stumped up what during the crisis.

The posts so far have been based on rumour, guesswork misunderstandings and ignorance of how the finances of the club actually work.

My view is that I'm glad that those associated with the demise are gone. I have no informed view on Crouch but he tends to be portrayed as a good chap while Lowe is portrayed as a heinous villain. Yet they both steered the club to where it is now. Lowe was without a doubt the man responsible for the new ground, but once that was done his lack of understanding of what needed to be done sent us out of the premierhship.

As far as Lawrie and Le Tiss are concerned they remain Saints legends for what they did at the time they did it. Neither of them know how to run a football club from an ownership viewpoint in the modern era.

They should maintain their status as ambassadors for the club and have nothing to do with actually running it.

Le Tiss is a great hero but he couldn't pick a winner in a one horse race with an insider tip off.

Lawrie propbably did make a bundle out the Saints but his efforts and results in the 70s and 80s surely excuse that?

They are all behind us now .. time to move on.

What about what Mr McMenemy GAVE us: Great players, good football, stability... Oh, and the small matter of 1976... Some people deserve to make money from our club (i.e. L. Mc.). We all know those who don't... Lawrie, for me, you are and always will be a big part of SFC.
agreed .i said similiar in an earlier post....won us the fa cup cost an extremely huge amount of cash
if saints had won the fa cup under lowe .would people say he is a true saint and that he had the vision to bring in strachan and get us a new stadium .looking through past posts i would have thought so as most saints seem to be a fickle lot ie mark fry..one week he was a complete useless **** .this week up there with channon stokes osgood etc
Just one thing, we didn't win the cup under Lowe, but we did suffer two relegations under his reign (even if he had been reluctantly escorted from the party a few weeks before the second relegation came to pass).

McMenemy doesn't need to remind us of what Leon has done for this club, we all know of his generosity and good intentions. However, remember when McMenemy left for Sunderland in 1985 and insulted us with his 'great hotbed of football' quote. Too hot for you Lawrie, wasn't it!!

People of Southampton have very very forgiving hearts. I for one will never forget the way he dumped us in 1985, he was a big time charlie then and he is now.

As for crouch, i reckon hes had a few million out of the saints coffers like the other letches so to put a little back in doesnt hurt and makes the forgiving people feel better about him

Now Lawrie stick to charity work and watch from yours and Leons box with your tartan blanket over your knees.
We could do without this ageist nonsence sonny. Now get on with your school work.

Yes we all owe Leon Crouch a massive thank you. The man has been a true fan and without him there would have been no Southampton Football Club to sell. Just like when he put right the Ted Bates statue.
My thanks are from the heart Leon

Oh! Lawrie,

Nice one!

“The number of people I’ve had on my travels asking me how the club is, from taxi drivers to the man on the street to massive functions in London, is amazing”.

However, the “stream of people approaching you when you were at the Queens’ Garden Party at the Buckingham Palace”.

How do I put this… a bit over the top?

I’m sure someone, soon will get around to suggesting they erect a statue to you at St Mary’s. That’d be nice, wouldn’t it?

Oh! Come on Lawrie! You’ve put the time in haven’t you? All those prawn cocktails at all those after-dinner speeches around the Hampshire golf circuits. Why, you’ve hardly been off Radio 5 Live.

Listen, old chap, take it from someone who is also an OAP, your age in fact, time to let the younger ones take charge. It’s their club now, so, let go!

By the way, ever hear anything of the Sunderland and Hartlepool lads?

I agree wholeheartedly with most of the posters on here. Leon Crouch is a true Saint. He must have put millions of his own money into this club and he doesn't shout about it. A breath of fresh air compared to that duck hunting Judas!

Quite a few unfair comments being made about Leon, but then everyone is entitled to their opinion, personally I am very grateful to him for standing up to the previous (regime) which I dont consider him to have been part of, he was & is one of us. He certainly did more for the club than most & I wouldn't have thought money was ever his motivation! Thanks Leon

Blimey some of you guys have short memories.Lawrie Mac gave you some of,if not the best times your club has ever had. What is the point of having shares and not make money out of them, the idea is one day to make money out of them.Hold your head high Lawrie and im not even a saints fan.

I have just read the article by Lawrie Mac on Leon Crouch and I agree that this man deserves, and should have some kind of recognition. At the end of the day his contribution saved our club from sinking into the abyss by putting his own personal money into the club to pay wages.
(It would be nice if he was offered a place on the board of directors)this man is a true saints supporter through and through and I thank him for it.

Thank you very much Leon.

Whilst I accept Leon Crouch is a true Southampton Supporter some blame lies at his door- as wel as Lowes, Wilde and others. People forget the huge payouts that these directors got when Saints became a PLC and eventually moved to St Mary's!!! They were board directors- there job is to run the club properly - this hasn't happened in recent years and lets hope we never return to the days of this kind of mismanagement. People are quick to blame Lowe- and he rightly is to blame for much of what has happened- especially failing to secure a good manager after Strachan/ Hoddle days - but equally there are others- that may feel guilty and may indeed have put money in- but perhaps they should have run it properly in first instance. My thanks go to the Swiss guy for bailing out the worst disater since Titanic...left port .

On the Lowe front- things got much worse financially AFTER he left (or was pushed ) on first occassion. Remember he did help us move to St Mary's. HIS WORSE FAILING WAS NOT SECURING GOOD MANAGEMENT -leading us to fall from Premiership to free fall to League 1. Lowe must accpet huge responsibility for this as is basic job- to ensure the right people are employed by the club. Let us hope that this Swiss outfit ensure anyone who works for Saints in future from stewards up - is RIGHT for the job!

Fair comment, but at the end of the day Lowe made the final decisions not the board,Lowe always overuled the board and done what ever he wanted to do.

I DO AGREE,BUT HE TRIED HIS BEST TO GET HODDLE BACK-SURELY HODDLE COULD NOT HAVE DONE WORSE THAN THE STRROCK,WIGLEY AND REDKNAPP EFFORTS THAT CAME INSTEAD.
IRONIC THAT THERE IS SO MUCH SUPPORT FOR THE RETURN OF STRACHAN-AND WHOSE FORESIGHT LED TO HIM COMING TO SOUTHAMPTON IN THE FIRST PLACE...WHEN HE HAD NOT LONG GOT THE SACK AT COVENTRY.
