Alan Pardew believes Saints might have got themselves “one of the bargains of the season” after snaring David Connolly.
The Saints boss has been eyeing the Republic of Ireland international in training over the past few weeks and decided the 32-year-old was fit enough to sign after 18 months out through injury.
Connolly, who has played at the highest level, was a free agent after being released by Sunderland at the end of last season and has agreed a contract until the end of the season at St Mary’s.
That will be extended by a further year if he makes an undisclosed number of appearances.
Pardew, who sold Connolly to Leicester when he was West Ham boss in 2004, thinks he might just have signed the perfect strike partner for Rickie Lambert.
He said: “There’s never a win-win situation but David’s coming to show he’s ready to kick back in.
“I believe in him and my staff all feel that we could get one of the bargains of the season, but only if David comes back to what he achieved and what he could do before.
“He’s a Premiership player when he’s at his best."

If he has been training with us for the last three weeks, then he must have already started to form a partnership with Lambo and Lallana, so see no reason why he can't go straight into the starting 11. No doubt had we had this team last season we would not have been anywhere near the bottom three of the CCC. This is a promotion winning side. Come on you Saints

Brite Spark wrote:Thank you for the article, but If you are trying to suggest Connelly is trouble then I think your off the mark,
Thanks Moog Anyone remember this? New Hammers striker David Connolly has sensationally threatened to quit West Ham - less than a fortnight after completing a £285,000 switch from Wimbledon. Connolly - who scored the winning goal in this afternoon's 2-1 win at Preston - issued his 'quit' threat after being left on the subs bench for the game. According to Connolly he was only told yesterday afternoon that he was starting from the bench - hours after the Hammers completed the loan signing of Neil Mellor from Liverpool. According to Connolly, a clause in the Mellor agreement states that the young striker should start as often as possible - a situation understandably unacceptable for Connolly, who thought he would be starting the match until the late change of heart. "I had been part of the starting line-up in training all week," an angry Connolly told the packed post-match press conference. "Then we picked Neil up at a service station on Friday and I was told he would be playing instead of me. "It was a mind-boggling, terrible decision, a real kick in the teeth. I was very disappointed with Glenn Roeder and I told him so. "You have to earn the right to play during training and in games, and I felt I had done that. It was unfair on Neil that he played, unfair on the team because they hadn't trained with him and unfair on me." Issuing his threat to quit, the fiery Irishman added: "I don't know if Neil is going to play all the time - but if he is I am going to look for another club. I didn't come here to sit on the bench. "I don't mind competition, but you have to earn the right to play. The impression I got was that Gerard Houllier only let Neil come because he was guaranteed to start. "When Glenn told me I wasn't playing I was in total disbelief. How can he pick someone who has only trained with us for an hour? "He could have signed for other clubs but didn't because he wasn't guaranteed a start. So why did he sign for West Ham? I can't believe it. I will speak to Glenn again about this. I have to." Connolly's outburst has left a stain over the vital victory, whilst his comments are more than a little disappointing. Whilst understandably aggrieved by the situation it seems unforgivable - given the current circumstances - that he has chosen to make his displeasure public, instead of dealing with it 'in-house'. Glenn Roeder's reply was sharp, and to the point. "No one is guaranteed a first-team place at this club, so I don't know where David is coming from on this one," he said. "I gave him his debut when I was at Watford. He was an angry ant then, and nothing has changed. "It's nice to know he is going to speak to me, though. After all, he has just signed a three-year contract."

GC will be a great signing and I'm pleased for Lambert to finally get a player who can create something for him and gel into a great partnership. Lallana did quite well with Lambert as well but Saints need Lallana creating from midfield. I would like to see Lallana or Mellis play in the hole in front of the 2 strikers. My team: Davis James Trots Jaidi Harding Hammond Waigo Mellis Lallana Lambert Connolly formation: 4-1-3-2 I think Lallana Mellis and Waigo are good enough in this division to play an expansive game as long as they can work hard when we don't have the ball. I would use this in a counter attacking formation so keep as many players behind the ball and break out quickly when the opposition makes a mistake.

Reckon Connolly could start,if he looked sharp enough in training to sign and put in the squad -why not ? I am sure they could drop him into a couple of resers games as well to sharpen him up,but I have a feeling he is the type of player you cant hold back. He is an intelligent player so should read lambos game quickly, This just gets better and better, the players must be looking round the dressing room and thinking, this is taking shape. Hammond IMO is the best player by a country mile, the sort of player that to be honest are pretty thin on the ground,Like all the signings by AP but he stands out. Should be 3 pts tonight. Look for 4-5-1 in the first half and then connolly will come on ,go 4-4-2 and run riot. Result 2-1 ( only guessing) but better than worrying isnt it ! Good luck boys.

I've got a job trying to keep up with changes at the Dell this week - at least 2 players out, and now 2 more new players in, Michail Antonio and David Connolly, the Irish international striker. Pardew says on the web-site that Connolly is just what Ricky Lambert needs in the box. What he really needs, of course, are wingers who get to the bye-line, and make proper crosses to him. Bristol Rovers used the right wing throughout the match last week, and caused havoc. I still remember that stunning left wing move and cross which led to the spectacular goal scored by Brentford.

What AP has done in still a matter of weeks is stunning, we were dead and buried in July & facing the Blue Square league, now we are looking like THE side in League 1, yet still 21pts off the top, we can get that back, the headstart was a gift, now its serious!!
if no -10 we'd be 3 off the play offs
The feet are on the ground as improvements slowly cut the errors. Surely everyone can see that Alan Pardew built this team, he has the complete backing of the owners, it's his team, the players want to be there and have to work really hard to get in, there is hot competition for places, he takes no crap from anyone, he makes his expectations clear and is totally honest and up front with all of us.
Anyone still decrying this man can go and take a running jump..

Are they the same medics that have passed fit this 'bargain', who has been out injured for a year and a half? I am impressed by his scoring record but, as said, he has been out of action for 18 months and that is the reason why I I say that I am not convinced.Linesman wrote:Pulis was part of the deal that saw Andrew Davis go the other way.
