Saints bag 'bargain of the season'

Alan Pardew believes Saints might have got themselves “one of the bargains of the season” after snaring David Connolly.

The Saints boss has been eyeing the Republic of Ireland international in training over the past few weeks and decided the 32-year-old was fit enough to sign after 18 months out through injury.

Connolly, who has played at the highest level, was a free agent after being released by Sunderland at the end of last season and has agreed a contract until the end of the season at St Mary’s.

That will be extended by a further year if he makes an undisclosed number of appearances.

Pardew, who sold Connolly to Leicester when he was West Ham boss in 2004, thinks he might just have signed the perfect strike partner for Rickie Lambert.

He said: “There’s never a win-win situation but David’s coming to show he’s ready to kick back in.

“I believe in him and my staff all feel that we could get one of the bargains of the season, but only if David comes back to what he achieved and what he could do before.

“He’s a Premiership player when he’s at his best."

Great piece of business!! Like the sound of his contract extension based on if he plays enough games, and by the sound of things it will automatically happen so if is on firer there’s no chance of losing him to another club! I love supporting a club that is so well ran unlike the days when we where the laughing stock of English Football. Think AP will have David on the bench 2night but hes in the squad.

If he has been training with us for the last three weeks, then he must have already started to form a partnership with Lambo and Lallana, so see no reason why he can't go straight into the starting 11.

Match fitness is so much different to training with the squad and practice matches. Hope that you are right though and he is ready to go straight in from the start, as i would love to see Lambers and Connners destroy their defence.

Their boss was very keen to sign him against stiff opposition for the future at PNE. He trusts Pards to bring him on. Trots took a long time to get over a hernia prob. Doing so well now they'll want him back for sure.. He cost them $500k would be worth a mil to us for sure if he stays unhurt. The lads hit the wood a couple of times with headers.. his turn is coming.

Trotman is getting stronger and stronger, few Preston fans came on the 606 board the other day and asked how he was getting on? the majority feeling is that we are all very impressed but a few cocky comments followed that we will have him off them soon enough! Im not sure Preston will want to let him go but everybody has there price! they paied 500k for him nearly 2 years ago so if you ask me a million wont quite cut it on someone with that potential. I think 1.2-1.5 million would seal it! Basic fact is that if you are not in the Prem annd you are not fortunate enough to have a wealthy banifactor like us, the money we are talking about is serious cash!

Anyone remember this?

New Hammers striker David Connolly has sensationally threatened to quit West Ham - less than a fortnight after completing a £285,000 switch from Wimbledon.
Connolly - who scored the winning goal in this afternoon's 2-1 win at Preston - issued his 'quit' threat after being left on the subs bench for the game.

According to Connolly he was only told yesterday afternoon that he was starting from the bench - hours after the Hammers completed the loan signing of Neil Mellor from Liverpool.

According to Connolly, a clause in the Mellor agreement states that the young striker should start as often as possible - a situation understandably unacceptable for Connolly, who thought he would be starting the match until the late change of heart.

"I had been part of the starting line-up in training all week," an angry Connolly told the packed post-match press conference. "Then we picked Neil up at a service station on Friday and I was told he would be playing instead of me.

"It was a mind-boggling, terrible decision, a real kick in the teeth. I was very disappointed with Glenn Roeder and I told him so.

"You have to earn the right to play during training and in games, and I felt I had done that. It was unfair on Neil that he played, unfair on the team because they hadn't trained with him and unfair on me."

Issuing his threat to quit, the fiery Irishman added:

"I don't know if Neil is going to play all the time - but if he is I am going to look for another club. I didn't come here to sit on the bench.

"I don't mind competition, but you have to earn the right to play. The impression I got was that Gerard Houllier only let Neil come because he was guaranteed to start.

"When Glenn told me I wasn't playing I was in total disbelief. How can he pick someone who has only trained with us for an hour?

"He could have signed for other clubs but didn't because he wasn't guaranteed a start. So why did he sign for West Ham? I can't believe it. I will speak to Glenn again about this. I have to."

Connolly's outburst has left a stain over the vital victory, whilst his comments are more than a little disappointing. Whilst understandably aggrieved by the situation it seems unforgivable - given the current circumstances - that he has chosen to make his displeasure public, instead of dealing with it 'in-house'.

Glenn Roeder's reply was sharp, and to the point.

"No one is guaranteed a first-team place at this club, so I don't know where David is coming from on this one," he said.

"I gave him his debut when I was at Watford. He was an angry ant then, and nothing has changed.

"It's nice to know he is going to speak to me, though. After all, he has just signed a three-year contract."

It most certainly is a great feeling after the misery of last year. All we need now is points on the board and to start movng towards the play-offs. (Or am I being a bit UNrealistic there?)
Still, I'd settel for 1-0 tonight, don't care if it's anoter lambert penalty, a fklukey own goal or clearly miles offside, it's the kind of morale-boost we all need.

Thank you for the article, but If you are trying to suggest Connelly is trouble then I think your off the mark,
The majority of managers would never do what Glen roeder did!It was a mistake and maybe Connelly should not have of made it public but if he is true to his word then he will know he is going to have to work hard to get in the starting 11! I am in complete agreement with DC and I personally do not and never have rated Glenn Rodent as a manager!
This guy could be the key too a play off push!

I'm pretty certain if we offered, say, £1 and a half mill Preston would probably accept it. At the end of the day, though, it also depends on whether Trotman would be happy to sign for us permanantly. Reading the interview with hin in the match prog a few weeks back, I got the impression he was happy to be here til Jan to get match practice etc and then return to PNE to fight for his place there. I might be wrong and I hope I am. He would be another cracking permanent addition.

Only one negative contributer so far, must be some sort of record.

I think he will start tonight, as Southend will have knowledge of him from his Watford, West Ham and Wimbledon days and it will give them something extra to worry about. IF not I am sure AP would have not announced him so soon, if all he was going to be was a sub. Either way, I am looking forward to the game, and some feedback from some of you that are going to the game on his performance and the team structure. I sincerely hope we don't go 1-4-5-1 !!

GC will be a great signing and I'm pleased for Lambert to finally get a player who can create something for him and gel into a great partnership. Lallana did quite well with Lambert as well but Saints need Lallana creating from midfield.
I would like to see Lallana or Mellis play in the hole in front of the 2 strikers.

My team:
Davis
James
Trots
Jaidi
Harding
Hammond
Waigo
Mellis
Lallana
Lambert
Connolly
formation: 4-1-3-2

I think Lallana Mellis and Waigo are good enough in this division to play an expansive game as long as they can work hard when we don't have the ball. I would use this in a counter attacking formation so keep as many players behind the ball and break out quickly when the opposition makes a mistake.

Reckon Connolly could start,if he looked sharp enough in training to sign and put in the squad -why not ?
I am sure they could drop him into a couple of resers games as well to sharpen him up,but I have a feeling he is the type of player you cant hold back.
He is an intelligent player so should read lambos game quickly, This just gets better and better, the players must be looking round the dressing room and thinking, this is taking shape.
Hammond IMO is the best player by a country mile, the sort of player that to be honest are pretty thin on the ground,Like all the signings by AP but he stands out.
Should be 3 pts tonight.
Look for 4-5-1 in the first half and then connolly will come on ,go 4-4-2 and run riot. Result 2-1
( only guessing) but better than worrying isnt it !
Good luck boys.

UTS!
Agreed. I think he's likely to return or maybe get a further loan extension. I have doubts that he'd want to be a permie at a league one club.
I suppose it depends on what he's paid and how he views our future.

By January he'll have a good idea if we are likely to be contenders this season (unlikely) or strong probabilities next. Sadly I reckon he'll be off .... but if he does us proud until then I will wish him well.

Yeah I think Harding for me too. He runs his balls off and has been solid (apart from the odd slip up in the last couple of games).

RL would be a close second. He's been getting fitter and stronger and is looking more and more quality every match. Just needs more support which hopefully DC and a 442 formation will provide.

In all honesty, although I recognised the name, I can't say I know his style play.
AP seems to think he is quite elusive in the box and will get shots in, so that has to be a good thing.
I would like to think that he has traits similar to Paul Dickov, in so much as he is an annoying little g1t, who never gives the defenders a minutes peace, creating chances from shear persistence.
Appreciate it if those who know can pass comments on his style of play.
At 32, he should (last chance saloon?) put his heart into winning a new contract and will then continue in the same manner, rather than become another Saga.

I've got a job trying to keep up with changes at the Dell this week - at least 2 players out, and now 2 more new players in, Michail Antonio and David Connolly, the Irish international striker. Pardew says on the web-site that Connolly is just what Ricky Lambert needs in the box. What he really needs, of course, are wingers who get to the bye-line, and make proper crosses to him.
Bristol Rovers used the right wing throughout the match last week, and caused havoc. I still remember that stunning left wing move and cross which led to the spectacular goal scored by Brentford.

Not sure about Connolly - but anyone with a bit of pace, with an eye for goal and ability to beat a man will do for me!

Could be used as an impact sub - I would go with the side that beat Gillingham, and replace Mellis withJames and hope Thomas makes RB. With Trotman, Jaidi & Lallana back it would be virtually an unchanged side - I think James could slot in forMellis in the middle and do a good job away from SMS.

Really fancy a win and another 3-points, but ever the optimist. No score prediction - just a win!

I hope he'll prove a bargain, but suspect he's someway off match fitness. I'm slightly worried that the squad is now topping 40, yet we still don't have any quality in depth! I guess KD will start in goal tonight if only because Bart and Forecast wouldn't be trusted to do any better. This worries me and the many optimists predicting a comfortable win tonight will sadly be proved wrong. We won't keep a clean sheet and will probably need to score 2 for a draw!! Hope I'm wrong, but note my comments.

Brite Spark wrote:
Thanks Moog Anyone remember this? It was unfair on Neil that he played, unfair on the team because they hadn't trained with him and unfair on me." Issuing his threat to quit, the fiery Irishman added: "I don't know if Neil is going to play all the time - but if he is I am going to look for another club. I have to." Connolly's outburst has left a stain over the vital victory, whilst his comments are more than a little disappointing.
I dont blame him that was outragous!! at least were gonna get a player that wants to play, not like saga who is a lazy bag of ****.
2-1 tonight me thinks.

I recall my first time with a condom, I must have been 16.

I went in to buy a packet of condoms at the pharmacy. There was this beautiful assistant behind the
counter, and she could see that I was new at it.

She handed me the package and asked if I knew how to wear one. I honestly answered,
'No, this is my first time.'

So she unwrapped the package, took one out and slipped it over her thumb. She cautioned me to make sure it was on tight and secure. I apparently still looked confused. So she looked all around the store to see if it was empty. It was empty.

'Just a minute,' she said, and walked to the door, and locked it.

Taking my hand, she led me into the back room, unbuttoned her blouse and removed it. She unhooked her bra and laid it aside.
'Do these excite you?' She asked.
Well, I was so dumb-struck that all I could do was shake my head. She then said it was time to slip the condom on.

As I was slipping it on, she dropped her skirt, removed her knickers and sat down at a desk.
'Well, come on', she said, 'We don't have much time.'

So I climbed on her. It was so wonderful, that unfortunately, I could no longer hold back and KAPOW, I was done within a few minutes.

She looked at me with a bit of a frown.
'Did you put that condom on?' she asked.

I said, 'I sure did,' and held up my thumb to show her.

She fainted.

If you got a blow job you didn't know you were getting, would you complain if she spat? That's it, I've just compared our new striker to a blow job. He shall from here on in be known as Blow Job Connelly. Maybe BJ for short.
Your mum.
Good comeback!
She had a comey-back last night.
I've got a horrible feeling that this guy is going to be one of those pests that don't ever go away but that we all grow weirdly fond of (no, not in a gay way Saint Stevo).
As he has been out injured for 18 months (a year and a half!), has arrived on a free and is dropping down two divisions, I must confess that I am not convinced. Pulis arrived injured, yet still appeared to pass a medical, so I wonder what medical test that this 'bargain' passed!
Pulis was part of the deal that saw Andrew Davis go the other way. Deal done by Rupert, because we needed the money. So how can you compare?
Read what I wrote!
Pulis was injured when he left Stoke and yet he still passed a medical at Southampton. That does not give me much faith in those that gave him the medical.
Are they the same medics that have passed fit this 'bargain', who has been out injured for a year and a half?
I am impressed by his scoring record but, as said, he has been out of action for 18 months and that is the reason why I I say that I am not convinced.

I do know that it's league 1 But what the heck,it feels great !!!

Tirau Dan, Tirau (NZL) says...
8:58pm Fri 9 Oct 09

Under the FL contract conditions it seems as though a number of appearances are guaranteed for signed players. This is why some of the changes keep coming and Pards keeps desperately saying he wants to chop some out. He's really annoyed that no one wants them.
This is not something he can do much about.. has to play them a) cos of contracts and b) cos he has to show them off to scouts or no one will take them at all.
Employment conditions in football could be a touch surreal.
Interested to hear from anyone who knows the rules for sure...
top of the out list would be Saganowski

Well here we go again and when was the last time anyone could breath at half time... first away win coming up for 7 months...?

I don't want to make it sound like hype or overly optimistic clap trap, Oldham and the Dons will be a lot harder games but if we keep the improvement curve going and keep building on cutting the mistakes we should be able to systematically annihilate all before us.
The way we lifted enough to mostly get on top of that Laurent Barnard combination today was borderline okay but the way we turned their back line for long periods was exceptional.. looks like Pards is onto both areas making the players stand up and work. All seems very professional.

An excellent result. The most impressive thing is the way Pardew has built a team from the back in the classical way (remember Strachan). We have been desperate for years now for big, strong centre halves and I can’t remember when we last had two specialist full backs - Telfer and Bridge?. It’s not fanciful to say that Murty, Trottman, Jaidi and Harding would probably have kept us in the Championship. Hammond has given that bit of solidity and security in midfield, and now Pardew has moved on to start to build a cutting edge up front , building around the big but skilful goal scoring centre forward that we have never had since Beattie.

These are all signs of a serious club being built up, with sensible and sustainable expenditure just about justified by crowds of just under 20,000. If we can maintain that support until January then the owners will probably spend a bit more. At a dinner for local businesses before the Gillingham game, the directors made it plain that the owners would spend money “appropriate to the division that the club is in” and the level of support. This is a clear and hugely reassuring affirmation that the lunatics, Lowe, Wilde and, to a lesser extent, Crouche, have indeed left the asylum. Early days I know but, goodness, it just feels so much better.
