Alan Pardew believes Saints might have got themselves “one of the bargains of the season” after snaring David Connolly.

The Saints boss has been eyeing the Republic of Ireland international in training over the past few weeks and decided the 32-year-old was fit enough to sign after 18 months out through injury.

Connolly, who has played at the highest level, was a free agent after being released by Sunderland at the end of last season and has agreed a contract until the end of the season at St Mary’s.

That will be extended by a further year if he makes an undisclosed number of appearances.

Pardew, who sold Connolly to Leicester when he was West Ham boss in 2004, thinks he might just have signed the perfect strike partner for Rickie Lambert.

He said: “There’s never a win-win situation but David’s coming to show he’s ready to kick back in.

“I believe in him and my staff all feel that we could get one of the bargains of the season, but only if David comes back to what he achieved and what he could do before.

“He’s a Premiership player when he’s at his best."
