Michail Antonio and Aaron Martin on verge of Southampton deals

More stories about: Michail Antonio

MICHAIL Antonio is today set to extend his loan deal at Saints, while Eastleigh’s Aaron Martin still waits for his dream move to St Mary’s.

Reading midfielder Antonio joined Saints for an initial period of a month at the beginning of October.

That deal officially expired yesterday, but the club were expecting to announce the loan was being extended today.

The full details are not yet known, but it is understood he is likely to join for another month.

The 19-year-old, who possesses searing pace and plenty of skill, has played a key part in Saints’ recent run of good form.

He made his debut in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy victory over Torquay and has since been used as a substitute by Saints boss Alan Pardew, being deployed down the right wing.

Although still a raw talent, Antonio has provided a real spark from the bench on a number of occasions.

Most notably, he helped inspire Saints’ comebacks in the 3-1 win over MK Dons and Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Leyton Orient.

It is those performances that have persuaded Pardew to keep him on a bit longer.

Antonio’s deal with the Royals expires next summer and Saints would likely be in pole position to sign him on a permanent basis if the chance arises and they see fit.

Eastleigh defender Martin is also hopeful a deal to bring him to the club will finally be struck.

The 20-year-old former Itchen College pupil was due to complete his move to Saints late yesterday afternoon.

However, the formalities of the deal weren’t quite completed in time for him to be unveiled and it has, once again, been put back.

There is understood to be no problems with the transfer and both sides hope it will be completed imminently.

It has been a frustrating saga for the youngster, who has been on the verge of making the short move from the Silverlake Stadium for a number of weeks.

It has also been a far from ideal scenario for Eastleigh, who are no doubt keen to fully concentrate on one of their biggest weeks in recent memory.

The Spitfires travel to Barrow for the first round of the FA Cup this Saturday – the first time they have ever made it to that stage of the competition in their history.

Martin was handed a chance in Saints reserves’ match at Plymouth on October 13 and, shortly after that, Pardew confirmed he was weighing up a permanent move for him.

However, it has taken some time for the deal to be ironed out.

It now appears to be firmly on the brink and could be completed as early as today.

On loan again ?! READING must be mad but hey im not complaining,i thought they would have taken him straight back seeing as they are struggling. This is great news for us as he has the pace we need,he frightens defenders silly.Hopefully we will get him permanently,if we carry on from month to month other teams will notice him ( if they haven't already ) & try to get him.AS for the 4-5-1 formation GET RID OF IT AP.You see how devastating we are against teams when we play 4-4-2.So what if teams know we are going to play this formation at home & away let them set their stall up to try & stop us,because as WE ALL KNOW the boys can beat anyone in this formation.

For me Antonio is by far the better prospect. He is quick, strong, has good ball control and awareness. May be needs to work on his crossing and final pass, but this will come. Waigo has pace and that's about all. Lightweight, poor control, terrible crosser and clueless in terms of being caught offside. Sign Antonio permanently (if possible) and send Waigo back to Italy!!

What drivel is spouted on here sometimes. Waigo is frustrating and is often caught offside but, sometimes unfairly so. To say he cannot cross a ball is ludicrous and he tackles back when he's disposessed, something Mellis, Mills, Llalana and Antonio show little sign of doing. He also single-handedly inspired our comeback after an abject first half against Torquay. He was robbed of a good goal against MK Dons. Sure, let's sign Antonio but, Waigo, too. I'd like to see them both start with Waigo in the centre alongside Lambert.

The drivel is all from you I'm afraid! When have you seen Waigo produce a good cross or tackle anyone(please tell us) and the reason he was 'robbed of a good goal' against MK Dons was because the clown was standing at least 2 yards offside as the free kick was taken. I was in-line and the linesman correctly raised his flag well before the ball reached his head. And that was just one of about 4 or 5 offsides in the first half, most of which were quite frankly embarrassing!!

From what I've seen of Antonio he looks to be a very exciting but very raw talent. He's lightning quick but his instinct tends to be to take on any defender that gets in his way. In this league that's not at all a bad thing, as he's got the measure of most left backs in the division, but I think most Championship defences would be savvy enough to marshall him into the channels where he won't be able to do much damage.
That, I think, is why Reading are happy to extend their loan of him and I think it's win win for both clubs.
His long term future is more interesting as he's certainly young enough to be turned into an exceptional player who knows when to dribble and when to play the simple ball. Whether Reading think he can make that transition quickly enough will probably depend on whether they'll want him back. But I've no doubt that if he stayed with us he'd become an absolutely amazing player.

I cant belive some comments on here, probably most of you all saying that papa was going to be the best thing since sliced bread when we first signed him.

Although I wouldnt say he was an outstanding player at the moment I dont think he has done to badly in his brief time in England so far! I disagree that he has a bad touch and he has weighed in with the odd goal this season from a wide right position rather than his preffered striker role.

Keep it papa (some fans appreciate it)

Well, Antonio seems to have won a unanimous vote from the jury on here. He is certainly exciting but his stats.so far show no goals and no assists.
The same jury is split 50/50 onPapa who,the stats. show has scored 2 goals and no assists.
These figures are of course not for direct comparison as Papa has had much longer on the field of play.
Other stats show that Lambert has scored 9 with 6 assists whilst Lallana has scored 6 with 2 assists.
Lallana has certainly raised his game from last season when he had 1 goal from34 appearances.
Only League games considered.
Oh! and Connolly has the amazing record of 2 goals and 1 assist from 0 appearances. Not many can beat that.

I'm with you. Given he's arrived to a completely new footballing culture and he doesn't speak the same language as the rest of the lads I think it's hardly surprising he's occasionally caught in the wrong place. But I think he's done enough to deserve a starting place because he can get in behind defences and unlock them, which is the chief problem we had in those first few games of the season.

That’s great news about Michail Antonio having seen him at Boundary Park and St Mary's, he's a real asset; I’ve not see the other boy, yet.

As for the player formation, I’m perfectly happy to leave that aspect of the Saints’ game to those who know about such matters, e.g. the coach/manager, Mr Pardew.

I have noticed however, that the likes of Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson use various formations with seemingly good results.

I can't believe the moaning about Papa either - it's incredible that these people aren't Premier League scouts with the amazing eye they have for footballers!

Papa does get caught offside a lot, but that doesn't automatically make him a bad player (and of course it doesn't mean that he 'doesn't understand the offside rule').

Can I remind everyone that Saints would be out of the Paint Pot if it wasn't for Papa?

Also, if you bother to read AP's comments on the last match, he said that Waigo had a decent game - think I'd prefer to listen to AP than some of the people on here.

Give the guy time - he's adjusting to a new league in a country where he doesn't speak the language playing in his less favoured position.

People nowadays expect immediate results for everything and it does my head in.

agree with the above comments totally, papa does'nt deserve to be slated on here, he has speed and is dangerous in the box, antonio is bullish has speed but has yet to score, different styles to suit different situations ( AP tactics), both track back and yes papa does get caught o/s but he's learning, not getting caught as often, we should be happy that we have the options at a/p's dispossal, most managers in this league would love what we've got, things can only get better

I agree. I dont think Connelly is worth risking 90 mins at the moment as we're winning games, and its more sensible to bring him on for last half hour when we need a lift rather than taking him off at half time.

He probably plays better when the game is stretched. If we were losing every game then it may be worth risking, but we're not.

If he got injured we are struggling for someone else to play up front with Lambo. Waigo doesn't really cut it for me up front , saga's useless and cant be bothered and patterson isn't good enough yet.

The only change I would make would be to start Antonio ahead of Waigo on the wing to give us a first half edge.

I haven't seen this lad Aaron Martin play but I trust AP's judgement and it's a fantastic story for the young lad and I sincerly wish him every success, As for Antonio he has been awesome when he has come on and turned games around for us and I am sure that AP doesn't need fans telling him what formation to play, but 4-4-2 is surely not far away with it's impact and would give Saint's an extra edge, my only concern is we only have Lambert, Connolly and Paterson as recognised strikers and if we were to play 4-4-2 we would not have enough options up front? I would like to see Saint's add another out and out striker to add to our quality someone like Gillinghams Simone Jackson who is proven at this level and like Lambert would make the step up to the Championship because of there natural ability and goalscoring talent.

Completely agree. I like Weigo. Everytime he gets the ball and runs to the byline you can see the backs terrified. Yes he has been getting caught offside, but that is more down to the slow final ball out of midfield. At Orient both Wotton and Morgan started to supply the final ball to him from behind his left shoulder allowing him to run onto it. Antonio on the other hand seems to pick the ball up deeper and runs straight at defences, using his pace to create problems.
This isn't a case of which one should we keep, its a case of woopee we have got two great wingers.

Agree 100pc Alex, especially the Saga dilema, Reading would be the better option as they have Rasiak already so Saga wouldn't give it a second thought, and we get a far better player in return where's the downside? Also the 4-4-2 is obvious to all of us, but as you rightfully say AP knows what he is doing and when the formation switch is needed, as frustrating it is to watch & wait in Pards we trust :) COYS!!
