Pards: we'd have won if we'd turned ugly

Alan Pardew felt his side needed to sacrifice a bit of their “entertainment factor” to grab three points against Norwich.

The Saints boss had mixed emotions after the 2-2 draw – disappointment his side ended up with just a point despite leading twice, but enthralled by the fantastic game of football he had seen.

His professional head knew that once David Connolly had given Saints a 2-1 lead his side should have shut up shop.

But they paid the price for continuing to chase goals.

He said: “We were quite happy with the way it was going first half.

“We sacrificed a little bit of possession to catch them on the break.

“Second half they came out and caused us a lot of problems because their reaction to being a goal behind was first class.

“It forced us into a change but it was one we were comfortable with because Adam Lallana is as good as (Wes) Hoolahan in that position.

“He came up with some clever play to give Connolly the chance and it was a brilliant goal from him.

“We should have then made the game ugly and shut up shop.

“But we like the entertainment factor and gave them a chance to get back in it, because it was too open for me. I wasn’t looking for any entertainment after David Connolly’s goal, I can assure you.

“I would have happily locked up shop.

“We tried to but fair play to Norwich because they’ve got good players, they move the ball, they’re on the front foot, they’ve got their tails up at the moment and they got an equaliser which I personally think they deserved.

“We should have won the game because we got that second great goal, but fair play to them.

“I said to the players ‘you did Connolly a disservice’ because that goal should have been a winning goal and we should have locked it all up.”

He added: “We’re trying to get a team here that understands how to win games, but you can’t fault the quality of the game.

“It was a game that would have graced a higher division.

“Norwich were as good as us, there were chances galore.

“Defensively we were a lot better and it is a game we should have won because their two goals were disappointing on our part and our two were fantastic.”

The two goals we gave away were very disappointing. Lloyd James wreckless tackle summed up another poor defensive performance from him (different player going forward) and Kelvin's "soap" incident was average as well. There we go need a win tomorrow to get the train rolling again!

One point out of six this week keeps us in the bottom four. Disappointing for the fans but then again we are playing some good stuff.

I am as sure as you can be that we won't be there after Christmas and will end up in the upper half of the table by the end of the season. But as Pards knows, a ruthless streak is needed to get out of this league.

Pards appreciates, as he has done from the beginning, that his main goal this season is to stay up and build a team that will go up next season. The fans will always want to accelerate that aspiration but the last week has shown that no matter how good you can play its results that count .... and if you drop points you pay for it.

Onward !!! This team is still a team that everyone fears ... so bring 'em on !!

I listened to the match on radio norfolk , obviously it was norwich biased , however the commentary team were saying in the first half that norwich were facing quality they had not witnessed previously so far this season ; second half appeared more even and as they said extremely entertaining ; I do agree with Mr AP's comments we must learn to finish the game off . We cannot afford to continue to drop points and we should start setting some milestone targets with the minimum objective of a playoff postion , it can be achieved we just need to be ruthlessly focused . I am waitng for the cup match return with norwich in december and then the away game next year at carrow road which i intend visiting - norfolk saint

Just found this little rumour by a Bournemouth fan on a transfer rumour site which is pretty reliable really on the whole here is the whole statement, tell me what you think as the echo seemed to have been stumped again today with stories to write.

"Some bad news for AFC Bournemouth Fans: The FA is to investigate the takeover of the club by Eddie Mitchell, when he had a controlling interest in Dorchester Town (he was previously their chairman). If any rules on club ownership have been broken, the club will be deducted all the points they have gained and will probably face relegation to the Conference. If this happens, Eddie Howe will quit the club (although I can't see him being out of work for long!) and Brett Pitman is already being looked at by Cardiff, Ipswich, Norwich and Southampton. The FA will make a ruling after Christmas – I won't be holding my breath, having seen what's happened to Luton, Chester and us in the past!"

Pards has such a great attitude. He wants good flare attacking football but common sense too. He demands hard work and total effort. The man just doesn't accept second. As a far off fan following the rebuild the best thing has been the way he openly says.. good but bldy well not good enough. Clean sheets and clean strikes is what we need and Pards won't settled for less.. Enjoy the game and football well played but be prepared to demand better... Pards will. This draw was fine but Orient wasn't and Brighton was a disaster.. redemption has to start with another fresh run of good victories.. Glory regained as push up out of the rele zone, take Leeds, reinforce in the window and charge forward in the new year with Pards cracking the whip. He's been banging them in all season and (having seen some of them on tele!) lots have been belters!

With only Super Rick and Connolly, we definitely need some decent backup. Patterson is hot and (mainly) cold and needs more time to develop but I would estimate that Pards knows he needs to sign another striker in Jan (especially if he is letting "fatty" go!) and Pitman must be someone they are watching.

From what I know of the player he is a good player he's only 21 so time is on his side and last season he scored 17 league goals. So far this season he has 10 goals in L2 in 17 apps, and half of them have been 25-30 yard volleys or something a bit special definately a good player. He seems to do well off the bench too so wouldn't mind coming on for DC or Lambo. I'll leave it for AP to pick the potential saints stars but I think he's worth a punt.

Great game even though very soggy in the front row!
Apart from putting Murty on, to remove the risk of James conceding another penalty, I did not get the impression that AP instructed the boys to shut up shop. We looked like we were going for 3-1 and then 3-2 after their second.
If the lino on the Kingsland side had not flagged wrongly both Adam and Papa I think we would have won!
Both possess blistering pace and this is what confused the official.
Play was directly opposite where I was sitting and on both occasions they were 2 yards onside when the ball was played!!
Still bitter and twisted 2 days later!
Should have and deserved to have won it!!

Young Ploopey(Baldrick), hope you had a bet on your predictions for the weekends results? No reply needed! Thought it was a fair result at SMS and that Norwich are potential automatic promotion candidates compared to Charlton and others we have played! MK Dons? Do one! Norwich deserved a point as did we after the 90 minutes, in less than tip top conditions. Against a lesser team than Norwich I would agree with the article but our expectations have been raised and I think that includes AP and that means he/we/us are doing something right to feel disappointed! 3 points tomorrow please! Paul Hart surveyed Pompey's 10th defeat of the season and insisted: We can still stay up.
A 1-0 slump at Stoke yesterday means the Blues have now lost 10 of their 13 Premier League games this season.

They now find themselves four points adrift of safety as the battle to remain in the top flight continues.

Yet Hart was given plenty of encouragement from his side's Britannia Stadium showing.

The visitors were left to rue Prince Boateng's seventh-minute penalty miss, while overall they controlled the match for large periods.

In the end, Ricardo Fuller's 74th-minute strike settled matters and inflicted another defeat on Pompey.

But Hart is adamant in the belief his side can still avoid the drop.

He said: 'You can't legislate for missing a penalty and I thought we played well, defended extremely well and controlled most of the game.

'I think to say that we are disappointed not to have something from it is an understatement.

'We could have done with three points, but we still believe that we are going to get out of this and we think in the final analysis six months down the line that goal difference will be important.

'Nobody's really got away yet, there's a chance that people will come back towards us as well.

'So I think – and I said this right at the start of the season – there is going to be seven or eight teams in the mix.

'We get two wins on the bounce – which we are very capable of doing – and the picture changes.

'My only concern now is to keep the players in that sort of confident form to go out and play as they can do.

'You look at the Wigan result yesterday. I still believe we'll get out of this and goal difference will be a massive thing by the end of the season.'

Despite the latest body blow to their survival hopes, in general, Hart was thoroughly pleased with the performance of his troops.

Pompey had to cope without injured duo Hassan Yebda and Nadir Belhadj, while David James joined them on the sidelines after pulling his calf in the warm up. Meanwhile, there was a rare start for Hayden Mullins, and Hermann Hreidarsson was making his first appearance of the campaign.

And Hart was delighted with their contributions. He added: 'The performance was excellent. They've had one real meaningful shot, I don't think the goalie has had a shot to save all game.

'What you have to say is that we had a penalty in the first few minutes and if we score that it's a totally different game.

'But Jamie O'Hara played very well for us, as did Michael Brown.

'There were some stalwart performances all over the pitch.

'Hayden Mullins came in and did a great job in that position and I thought we caused Stoke an awful lot of problems.

'As for Hermann, he was brilliant. That's his first game in something like seven months, he's a great character.

Pompey are set to be without David James for the next three weeks of their continuing battle to remain in the Premier League.
The England keeper injured his left calf during the warm-up before yesterday's clash at Stoke.

As a result, Jamie Ashdown was called up from the bench to deputise, with Antti Niemi named among the substitutes.

Ashdown was helpless to prevent Ricardo Fuller's 74th- minute winner.
Pompey now face an anxious wait to discover the full extent of James' injury.

However, Paul Hart expects the veteran keeper to spend the next three weeks on the sidelines.

That would rule him out of this Saturday's visit of Manchester United, the Carling Cup quarter-final against Aston Villa and also fixtures against Burnley and Sunderland.

But the Blues boss insisted James' absence is not linked to the keeper's on-going knee concerns.

Hart said: 'David pulled his calf, it may be compensatory but we are not sure yet.

'A calf muscle is probably about three weeks out. I think he will be fit for the World Cup.

'With his knee, we are managing the situation at the moment and – up until now – he's been out on the pitch.

'He has to do some gym work to help him through it but he's been out there playing still. He's not been a real problem.

'He hasn't got a knee injury, he had an operation on it in the summer. There are some things we have to manage in terms of rehabilitation but he's been getting out there on the pitch.

'This is a calf injury.'

Well, I might still have £50 at 16-1 on Saints reaching the play-offs, but I'm starting to write it off now. OK we can afford to drop two points to Norwich, wo are a very good team, but only one point from the six we should have had against Orient and Brighton have left us with an awful lot of work to do after Christmas. Let's face it, we're 16 points off 6th place, whcih is a big ask. If it had been 11 I think we could reasonably have expected to have a pop at it. AP is clearly more realistic than I was, when he set a target for top half of the table. It's true the team is only just gelling together, so we'll probably have to be patient for a while.
In the meantime, congrats to our old friend Nigel Pearson who is working wonders with Leiceter- third in the Championship after only being promoted last year. Good on yer, Nige. You weren't properly appreciated at SMS.

Look, Alan Pardew is a very astute, brilliant man manager, no question! He is absolutely right to state we need to learn to get ugly, although I wouldn't quite put it that way myself, I would prefer to say we need to learn to keep ball and make the opposition run their socks off trying to get it back, that can be very entertaining to watch. We play some very fast attacking football at times and it is lovely to watch however, there are a few points that I feel we need to urgently address if we are really going to get promoted from this division this year.
1. We have to find a replacement for Lloyd James taking free kicks and corners. His delivery is not good enough, fact. How many goals come from set pieces? How many have we scored from set pieces?
2. We need to have a plan B and I'm not just talking 442 or 451 I'm talking about and I will use the Brighton game as an example. We had plent of pressure in their box but it was all high ball and nod down or flick on, that's ok if you are winning the arial battle, Ricky Lambert was suffering with flu like symptoms so the last thing he wants to be doing is jumping up heading balls all day long. The plan B would have been to pass the ball to feet into the box, our pace would have opened up endless opportunities for the fox in the box and Ricky is first class with the ball hit hard to his feet.
3. We get in front and then we concede pathetic equalisers and in the case of Bristol Rovers twice this year we let in 2 goals after being in front. Not good enough, by far.
4. I love Kelvin Davis to bits but I think it is time Alan Pardew gave Bialkowski a run in the side. Against Charlton in the JPT he kept goal exellently. His quick distribution out to the wings was good to see and his 6 yard box is his, he commands it with a presence that instills confidence in his team mates.
I would love to hear your thoughts on my comments, good and bad.

So far this season we have, with the exception of Murty, been lucky with injuries. Pardew has had the luxury of being able to pick the same players for some weeks now; they should be familiar by now of each others play and should n't be needing weeks more to gel. Norwich are good side in this league, and although i'm not too distressed at not winning, i'm concerned at the number of goals we're conceeding....7 in the last 3 games; and this from a team thats remained unchanged for 9, 10 games or so. It is unrealistic to expect our strikers to score 2 and 3 goals every game....we will know for sure when this team is improving when teams are struggling to score against us...we need clean sheets, and we need them soon; Hartlepool would be a good place to start. Some might say this is a consolidation year, and to a degree their right, but would saints fans really be happy with just staying up, or finishing 14th???... we have to believe we can win promotion THIS year, we should be reaching for the stars not halfway to paradise.......!!

I disagree with AP on this one. Whilst it was a great game, the only way we were ever going to win was by taking a 2 goal lead. Once Connolly put us 2-1 ahead with 25 mins remaining we were immediately under pressure and contributed to this by defending too deep. In truth, Norwich were well worth a point (even though we gifted them their goals) and therefore not too disappointed overall.

St Retford, Manchester says...

Without wishing to state the obvious, I'd say our problems on Saturday were down to a lack of pace and sharpness in the defence. Both goals happened because their forwards reacted to rebounds faster than our defenders, and if I was KD I'd be very hacked off about that, especially after his penalty save.

But, in a way, that's something we're just going to have to learn to live with. We've picked a central defensive pairing that in general is right for this League. Most teams aren't Norwich - most will try and score by playing long balls into the box and looking to get a head on them. We can defend against that all day long because our defenders are great big lumbering mothers. However, they're not the quickest on their feet so when teams play with pace and precision through us then we'll be exposed.

Fortunately, most teams in this league don't play with pace and precision so we're going to win an awful lot more than we lose and I still think we'll do enough to reach the play-offs. However, when we're playing the decent sides in this division (who are basically just Leeds and Norwich) we're going to have to score a lot of goals, because we're certainly going to concede.

I'm a bit disappointed with some of the easlier posts on other threads about Kelv's part in the 2nd goal. I was in the Icthen South, and had a direct line from when the ball was struck to when it got to the keeper, and that ball must have moved the best part of five feet, and never really got too high off the ground. The wind was awful, the rain was driving, It seemed from where I was to dip at the last minute as well, or hit the ground. I think it was a miracle that Kelv got to it at all. As said above, the disappointing thing was that after Kelv did what he is paid to do, which is keep the ball out of the goal, the defence were to slow to react and the ball just went straight back in.
Kelvin can't be blamed for either.

Just seen the goals on Saints Player and agree with those who say James' tackle, for the penalty, was reckless. What was worse, though, was he fact that he didn't read the through ball, allowing the forward to get away from him, which meant he was always going to come in from behind. Hopefully Murty is now ready to resume in that position.

Defense begins in attack, except against long ball, route one footballing teams. Our front one or two do enough to get by in my opinion but it is our midfield I have a problem with. Hammond is exceptional, a good tackler and an arial threat going forward, the players either side of him need to get some practice in tackling and holding off the opposition. How is that Costa Gaz. Less than 80

a very good passing team. The full backs took the Brighton wingers right out of the game.

A bit of Hartlepool's history, it would seem..Should help us beat this north east team.
In the days of the Napoleonic war,
A french ship was washed up on their shore.
Thinking they had captured a frog,
the sole survivor, they did flog.
After whipping, torturing and turning the screw..
They got nothing from him, so, what did they do?
They took him to Hartlepool's main square,
stripped him and cut off all of his hair.
Then they hung him from the highest tree..
But, what they hung was a chimpanzee.
So anywhere in Hartlepool you go..
Sing, "Who hung the monkeyo"!!
All of the Hartlepool's fans enjoy..
this idle banter.. boy oh boy.
I am sure they will love it, that we should rember..
little bits of history.. like the 5th of november.

third eye moment from highlights! watch the Norwich fan attempt to celebrate their first goal (unlucky KD!). this individual decides to join the pitchside celebrations but completely forgets the fact that they are 3 rows back! talk about a face plant! you just see him/her drag themselves to their feet as the players celebrate! that's got to hurt!
Cheered me up no end!

In my view, we did play ugly in defence. Trotman & Jaidi (in particular) are crude - OK against long arial punts (even though they can't direct their own headers) but nowhere near nimble enough to cope with the ball on the ground.
They rely on keeping close to each other to block attackers - so our full-backs were forced to try to pull their irons out of the fire. Harding & Murty are not to blame. As for David Connelly - best player by a country mile with amazing bonus workrate.

3000 attendance maybe 1k Saints?
A noisy covered tin shed end for our fans to reverb the singing and give us a treat with some brilliant noise.

Pards has told Solent he'll play 442 with Ricky and Davie up front again.
Saints must take this one seriously from the start. Must get the 3pts. Must get the train back on the rails.
I'd rather have 3 ugly points every week than beautiful draws.. if thats what Pards is on about.

Just seen the pole for tomorrow's game. Very positive which is good. Just be aware that Hartlepool have won three D two and L one in six league games. Including a three all draw at Brighton and a two goal win against Swindon.
So they have a good spirit and will give us a game. Another team with quick forwards, though on BBC they are saying one is doubtful with a hamstring. Which is Larkin.
Well hopefully the show will be back on the road tomorrow.
Hoping Pards has got them sorted out. No excuses about being tired after Saturday please.
I am not dooming, just saying not the walk over some think, we will have to earn this one. We can do it if the mental attitude is right.

The Saints are coming to Hartlepool Town.
With a performance that will make Countdown's Jeff Stelling frown.

A rout, I hear the men from Gillette Soccer cry.
Poor old Stelling, gives out a defeatest sigh.

One way traffic, Antonio's commanding the wing.
Our loyal supporters are sensing a win.

A hat trick for Connolly and Lambert makes it four.
Its time to shut up shop and firmly close the door.

There is only one team in it, perfection at last.
It makes up for the memories of the defeats that have past.

The Saints are coming, the red and white army.
My prediction of a 4-0 win will send our loyal supporters barmy.

Now that Murtyrty is back let LJ go into mid-field He can always drop deep to help the back 4 so the centre backs can play close to-gether and James goes between them and either full back depending which side we are bein attacked on
As far as the rest of the season is concerned first take these 2 statements as fact
50 points equals safety
76 points equals play offs
Before a ball was kicked we needed 1.08 points per game to get to safety (60 divided by 46) We now need 1.27 points per game so we have more to do
Before a ball was kicked we needed 1.86 points per game to reach the play offs we now need 2.17 So again more to do now than at the start
Our average so far is 1.35 points per game but over the last 7 games it goes to 2.14 A win at hartlepool would take the average over the last 8 to 2.25 i.e above the average we need to make the play offs
Keep the faith
Luvin it

A man staggered into a hospital with a concussion, multiple bruises,
two black eyes and a five iron wrapped tightly around his throat.

Naturally the doctor asked him, " what happened to you?"
"Well I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife, when at a
difficult hole, we both sliced our balls into a cow pasture, we went
to look for them and while I was looking around I noticed one of the
cows had something white at its rear end"

" I walked over, lifted its tail, and sure enough, there was a golf
ball with my wifes monogram on it - stuck right in the middle of the
cows butt, still holding the cows tail up, I yelled to my wife " Hey
this looks like yours!"

I don`t remember much after that.
