Murty may make first start in three months at Hartlepool

GRAEME Murty could be in line for his first start in three months tonight.

The right back has endured a long spell on the sidelines after suffering knee ligament damage in the 2-1 Carling Cup defeat to Birmingham in August.

He made his first team return as a 58th-minute substitute in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Norwich.

Earlier in the week, Murty scored a screamer for the reserves against Bristol City, on his first outing in a Saints shirt since his injury.

Saints will assess his fitness today, before deciding whether to throw him in from the start for tonight’s visit to Hartlepool.

Yes, Lloyd was shocking on Saturday. lets hope Murty shores things up at the back right and we can build on that for a win tonight.

My view remains that to play Hammond and "Spiderman" (Morgan) in same midfield is a luxury at Div 1 level.
Wotton is off the pace as a holding midfielder, so perhaps James can revert to that role. His key attributes are energy and enthusiasm??

Time for Lloyd to drop to the bench and Murty to get games in. If needed Lloyd can fit into midfield or if Murty isn't going to last 90 mins then right back.

Have a good feeling about Rickie Lambert tonight!!

Energy and enthusiasm?? ha ha!! the only reason he has those attributes is because he is caught out so many times, he needs all that energy to get back into posistion or make ridiculous challenges in the penalty area! Give him a nice warm jacket and a seat on the bench. Sky sports described him as a set peice specialist.....how many times have we scored from anything hes put into the box, please bear in mind that he lumps 30 crosses a game into the box (or not as most of them dont clear the defender!) Murty will give the strength and guidance needed at the back, plus Morgan is twice the player Lloyd is in midfield. Even Mellis should get a game before James.

433 tonight, with Lallana in the hole,
Wooton if fit as a holding midfielder with DH and MS as our link players. Lloyd needs a rest so Murty will start but he can come on any where in midfield if needed. Then we have Antonio, Papa and Mellis to shake things up if (it wont) it goes a bit wrong. Still believe we need Matt Oakley or Matt Holland for that holding role though.

You can't even compare the two of them, they're completely different types of player and are only interchangeable depending on what the gaffer wants from a particular tactic.

I've not seen enough from Schneiderlin to warrant a place in the team - can't see why people are so taken with him.

Can't believe that it looks like MK Dons are signing Quashie on loan too - think he could do a job for us in the defensive midfield role...

Pardew will stick with his 4-4-2 tonight. Connolly looks the part and he will not drop Lambert, so it will be two strikers. Changes I think that need to be made are Papa in for Antonio (on the bench son and make an impact when you come on). Mellis in for Morgan (controversial but I believe Mellis is a brilliant prospect) and Murty in for James.

Davis
Murty Jaidi Trots Harding
Papa Hammond Mellis Lallana
Lambert Connolly

Bench Bart, Antonio, Morgan, Paterson, Holmes, James, Perry

I look at this squad and believe that it has strength in depth to win this game. COYR

Agreed. MS puts in a tackle now and again but I've often seen him looking in totally in the wrong direction and not concentrating when the ball goes out of play at throw ins etc. WE PLAY A MULTI-BALL SYSTEM MORGAN, WAKE UP!

I just haven't seen him really get into a game yet, take it by the scruff of the neck and set it alight.

I'd much rather see James in the middle with Hammond.

I'm not sure James reads the game well enough to be the holding midfield player.
We all saw what happened on Saturday when he conceded the penalty. That was because he failed to read the through ball, giving the striker 2 yards start, leading to the rash "dive in desperation" tackle.
Whoever sits in front of the centre backs needs to be able to read the game and cut out problems before they reach the cb's.
I get the impression James would fail to read too many passes, creating more problems than he solves.
Wotton may be "off the pace" as you put it, but over the years the top managers and players have always said the "first 10 yards are in the head".
Surely, "knowing" where the ball is going, before it is passed, and being ready for it has to be a better quality than being fleeter of foot, but not knowing where to run?

I completely agree with this post apart from (controversial comment coming) i would put Bart in for Davis.
I have doubts about Davis. Is it a coincidence that the closest we've come to a clean sheet in the last 5 games is the 91st minute goal against charlton when you've guessed it, Bart was playing. Davis always seems to get beat in a limp fashion (both L. Orient goals, Gillingham, MK Dons, Charlton, Torquay....)

I feel sorry for Lloyd James, he's been a good pro for the past 2 seasons and deserves a run in midfield because he's not a right-back. Great to have Murty back, it will be a cold night in Hartlepool and we could do with 3 points.

Personally, I think KD is still our best keeper. Look at his shot stopping ability, there is no keeper in this division with his perception to read which way the striker will hit the ball and his reaction to get it.
Saturday he did everything right with the penalty, another inch or so and the angle would have taken it away from play, how many penalties is it now this season alone that he has either saved or at least got a hand too?
The second goal I think people are harshly judging him, we must take in to consideration the conditions, the wet slippery surface was a nightmare for the keepers, the bounce and pace would have tested any keeper in England never mind league 1.
I am the first to acknowledge KD`s limitations on his command of the box, but lets not forget the times he has saved us with his superb concentration and agility. COYR

I'm with Mellis too.. when he got on last week he set lallana and papa away for chances within two mins... Honestly Paterson is no where near the bench, was hopeless for the reserves (Papa is his #3 striker and Adam or Jacob would back up) and at the other end the boss is clearly favouring Kelvin.

Dan I like your posts but don't know where you get your information from? Mellis is quality and he reminds me of a young Frank Lampard, both he and Paterson had great games for the Reserves last week, indeed I thought they were the best two players on the park! Pato scored a peach to win the game, so I think he is giving Pardew something to think about. Papa is a winger imho and if he can learn the off side rule then I think he would get more starts.

We have a good squad, fingers crossed good enough for three points tonight. COYR

Agreed CM, he knows only too well how easily he's been skinned the last couple of games, but he has been loyal & I hope isnt going to be farmed out somewhere, good for cover or midfield but not RB. Great to have Murty back, the brief glimpse we got of him was good enough hopefully he slots back in and sorts our bl**dy defence out tonight?? Got to go for the 3pts and a 3-1, COYS!!
