First published in Saints News

SAINTS chairman Nicola Cortese has been linked with a move to Italy.

The Swiss businessman has been approached by an unnamed Serie A club to join their board of directors, according to a report that was first carried on BBC Radio Solent this morning.

Radio Solent have a commercial deal with the club.

Mr Cortese, who does not speak directly to the Daily Echo at present, has given interviews to Radio Solent recently.

Mr Cortese joined the club as part of Markus Liebherr's takeover in the summer.

The news comes at the same time as the club's senior management are making news today for upsetting a local charity.

Southampton Football Club refused to comment when asked by the Daily Echo.

Meanwhile along the M27, PFC's latest potential saviour is Colonel Gadaffi's son! Yep that's it, the same Gaddaffi who is a known sponsor of terrorism, WPC Yvonne Fletcher, Lockerbie, IRA! Makes me think that this 'fit and proper person' stuff that the FA go on about is not worth the soiled paper that it is written on.

The daily drivel that comes out of Fratton Park gets more laughable by the erm ... day!

I cant see NC who found our great club and told ML about us, then for doing such a fine job was asked by ML if he would like the oppotunity to lead our club as our chairman, just to give it all up. I doubt very much that he would leave. why would he leave? what club could offer him a deal that would make him consider leaving a club he has taken from the ashes and is now thriving, NONE I SAY. NC is going nowhere, mark my words, not that i know anything but the facts i think speak for themselves.

rumours. This doesnt worry me. What bothers me though is the link to the article about "saints bosses screwing up charity event" Why is it the saints bosses fault if the echo are bannned from St Marys, and couldnt find the testicular fortitude to say to the charity "sorry, we're not allowed to St mary's" rather than tainting the clubs name and limiting the chances of such events being held in the future thus limiting future potential revenue for the club. I know nobody really knows what has gone on between saints and the echo but please, lets be grown up about it. Gripe over. Cortese going nowhere.

It strikes me that if there were anything in a story such as "Markus Leibhers right hand most trusted man starting a five year plan and then abandons it after six months" surely more of the press would be following this?

Where are the details of the charities upset by Saints? Where is the story in the BBC?

Did anyone hear the Solent report
Any Light?

Think back to Nicola's appointment. It was initially a temporary one. Then there was talk of a Football Director. Could this all be tied into the next stage of the push onwards.

We don't know because we only half a thread of a potential story and we are left wanting the full story.

This is exactly the same as if you have a player or manager doing an excellent job in English League 1 then the top clubs come looking.

It is only the good work behind the scenes that has got him noticed.

After reading the dementia press conference story where the Echo was refused entry to the MTL suite at the hospital I'm left dumbfounded.

I want to be neutral as we don't know the fullest extent of the cause of the rift.

Nicola has banned the Echo from sms events premises and it seems charities.. This means ppl associated with the charities can't have local paper coverage of their events is associated with Saints.

The ppl concerned are going to have to accept that and hope Solent will cover the event or perhaps Saints themselves may be able to help.

We all suspect there was more to the banning than reported in the Echo. I can't have been just reporting a planning event surely?

As an Echo fan my unbiased opinion of the charity story is that The Echo are retaliating with an all out attack But what else can they do?

As a fan of Saints I can't believe the ban was placed for a petty breach.

If this feud ends in court who will win?

Have I got this wrong or missed something?

I believe the core issue is TRUST. The club wants to work with the local media, including the Echo, but only if they can trust them with confidential information or to keep to agreed announcement timescales.
.
Saints are happily working with Radio Solent, who appear able to work in harmony with the club without throwing it's toys out the pram.
.
I appreciate the Echo need paper sales to survive and will claim they have to be independent, but they clearly stepped over a line that Saints felt was a step too far.
.
The Echo need to either apologise or ask the club for a way back in (or both). Printing more pooh-stirring stories isn't going to help, but then you always get the impression with the Echo editors that they feel themselves above criticism.
.
I imagine that down the line, if the Echo's owners start seeing sales drop because of their poor coverage of Saints, then an editor and manager or two at the Echo will lose their jobs.

NC is clearly with us for the long run!

He got ML to buy the club, and has a very close good working / friendship with ML. He may get more money out of this, though NC has done us all proud, and has kept to his word on everything. He has clearly stated his long term views for the club, and I truly believe he fully intend to see the job through.

It is funny that the DE is out in the cold, and yet they are running two story's which are some what attacking NC!

Just to make something completely clear - this article is a report of something that was on BBC Radio Solent this morning.

The Echo has simply reported what another media outlet broadcast, as it was considered that such a story about a high-ranking club official would be of interest to the Saints fans who use this site.

As to why there is no byline on it - I wrote the copy in the article, based on the Radio Solent news report. I decided not to put my byline on the article as it is simply a report which has involved no original work or research by myself.

I think this sums up the problem the club and some fans have with the Echo. They can't just report something straight. There always has to be an angle or an undercurrent to the piece.

Why the link to the charity story?

You are trying your best to defend an Editor who has plainly lost the support of the football club and many of it's fans (potentially your subscribers) there will only be one loser in this spat, you would be wise to remain objective.

I decided not to put my byline on the article as it is simply a report which has involved no original work or research by myself.[/p][/quote]Why the link to the charity story? You are trying your best to defend an Editor who has plainly lost the support of the football club and many of it's fans (potentially your subscribers) there will only be one loser in this spat, you would be wise to remain objective. Those who are still criticising the Echo for 'cutting and pasting' stories or picking up stories via other media sources PLEASE GIVE US A BREAK!!
Not all of us have access to or the time to search for information about the Saints in other places, so as long as it appears on this site I couldn't give a flying funk who said it first.
I do not have access to Radio Solent so this has come as news to me.
IMO, the main concern for Saints fans should be, not where this story originated, but should NC have been seriously approached by an Italian team, would he take ML, and his billions, with him?

The John Suchet article was heavily anti SFC and very disappointing. When you arrange events you speak to the right people or fall on your face.
It's a question of whether readers believe Mr Cortese placed a ban on The Echo purely on the planning issue. An agreement had to have been breached which caused it to happen.
Paper v Mr Cortese in balance and honesty. Even the most unbiased at the moment will give this to Mr Cortese ... innocent until proven not.
I'm an ex cop, cynical to a fault but need evidence before I label Mr Cortese as childish. As for Mr Suchet he displays his in the article and did himself and his charity no good at all. Mr Suchet can lift the phone and speak to someone at SMS (or could have prior to today.

Rife rumours... I could find non except this one. Anyone?

Lowe should be an ideal candidate for a step-in chairman. Think about the facts:

1. A chairman who kept Saints in the premiership for years, if he isn't involved in him putting his own money in.

2. I know he was unpopular, but he knew how to keep things running smoothly, and makes unpopular decisions which is for the greater good of the club.

3. Think how quicker other provincial 'powerhouse' teams got relegated (Coventry, Leicester, Forest, Derby, Norwich) from the premiership much earlier than SFC did, all under his reign.

He will stay and see this rebuild through to a glorious conclusion – only one club in Hampshire.

On the NC story, does anyone know the UEFA position on a Director / Chairman of an English club, also appearing on the board of Directors of a European club? Would NC automatically have to leave us, if he accepted a Serie A Directorship? I know of many company Directors, that only work one day a month, and retain other full-time positions.

It is a great pity that Saints are in dispute with the Echo, but can anyone possibly find anything wrong that has come out of St. Mary's since last Summer.

The Editor of the Echo, Mr Ian Murray writes on page 7 of todays Echo "Our coverage of the Saints football team goes from strengh to strengh" The article in question does little to help the Saints.

However on page 48 in the Saints line up for the Brentford match to night, Antonio is neither playing or is he a substitute!

Please get back to the standard of reporting and accuracy of a few years ago, respect has to be earned!

I know this story came from Radio Solent but i cant help but feel the Echo have latched onto this.
In my opinion the media as a whole is one part informative and enjoyable and one part evil and manipulating who are not going to like people like Mr Cortese refusing to play ball with them.In comparison with the national newspapers the Echo is fairly well balanced..particular
y when you compare it to the utter awfulness of papers like the Mail and Sun which go out of their way to pander to and feed the total ignorance and irrational fears of uniformed people.Anyhow in a rather roundabout and random kind of way im just trying to say ultimately if the Echo is found out to be stirring things up then i will cancel my subscription to the paper because i love Saints ..simple.

In my opinion the media as a whole is one part informative and enjoyable and one part evil and manipulating who are not going to like people like Mr Cortese refusing to play ball with them.In comparison with the national newspapers the Echo is fairly well balanced..particular y when you compare it to the utter awfulness of papers like the Mail and Sun which go out of their way to pander to and feed the total ignorance and irrational fears of uniformed people.Anyhow in a rather roundabout and random kind of way im just trying to say ultimately if the Echo is found out to be stirring things up then i will cancel my subscription to the paper because i love Saints ..simple. the third hardest man in sholing

People change jobs in all walks of life - it's normal. However, I think we (supporters) would all be very sad to see Nicola go. I believe that he, as part of a good team, has done well for the Club. I hope he stays.
However, these oicks at the Echo have only one thing in mind - selling copy. It's a dishonourable profession, always stirring the mire, rarely reporting anything true.
The thing about the supporters is that they care, each in his own way ( I know we're all a bit different, thank goodness), which makes them all, in my eyes, honourable. Clearly, reporters, by definition, are not.

It's not the reporter.. the reporter heard the info and reported it. I think Editors write the head lines... whoever wrote "Linked with Move" needs to be called to account. No rumour went that far.. Expressions of interest being passes on isn't a link with a move surely...

I think you'd better be very very careful from now on Echo on what you post about Cortese and make sure it has some truth in it. You're heading for a tête-à-tête in court with the articles you've published in the last couple of days.

Stop sulking Echo. And that's a cheap shot, reminding us that Radio Solent have a commercial deal with the club. Are you insinuating that is the only reason they got the NC scoop?
