Flybe ends Southampton FC shirt sponsorship deal

AFTER four years and almost £2m, Flybe is to end its role as main sponsor with the Saints at the end of the season, the airline has announced.

The shirt sponsor, which last week announced it had managed to remain profitable despite the recession, described its sponsorship deal as a “rollercoaster of a ride”.

A Saints spokesman was last night unavailable to comment.

This morning however, Saints revealed they intend to launch a shirt without a sponsor, to mark the club's 125th anniversary.

Thanks to the massive wealth of Saints’ Swiss billionaire owner Markus Liebherr, the need for a shirt sponsor is not as pressing as in the past.

Flybe described the end of the deal as a “very amicable” parting, but the relationship has not always been smooth. Last June, before the takeover by Mr Liebherr, there were reports of an “irretrievable breakdown”

in relations after the regional air giant reported feeling “very poorly treated”

before frantic behind-the- scenes negotiations stabilised the situation.

Worth £250,000 a year in the Championship, the sponsorship’s value fell along with relegation to League One. However, over the course of the four-year deal Flybe are estimated to have spent between £1.75m and £2m on promotional activity with Saints.

Simon Lilley, Flybe’s director of marketing, said: “The sponsorship deal between Flybe and Southampton has proved a very beneficial partnership. The four years have been a real rollercoaster ride that have seen the Saints experience the highs and lows and it’s been an honour to have been the club sponsor during this time.

“We know the club were very grateful for the way we stood by them at the end of last season and provided commercial stability amongst their sponsors, and as a result we are parting on very amicable terms with Southampton and leave the club in a good position – solvent and with an exciting future under the new owners.

“Since the decision has been taken, Flybe have worked closely with the club to help them source a new sponsor and fully intend to continue supporting the club in whatever way we can over the next few years.”

During its tenure, Flybe has made a significant investment in the local community.

Last Christmas, Flybe took children from the Wessex Cancer Trust on one-off Santa flight for which Southampton Football Club players and management played starring roles.

Flybe also worked closely with the community through the annual Flybe Community Cup in association with the Saints, Hampshire County Council and the Daily Echo that encouraged grassroots football to schools from all over Hampshire.

It sends a message out to the footballing nation - we don't need a shirt sponsor this year. When we do it will be possibly the best shirt sponsor in the world. I'm all for promoting a Southampton Company and giving them a leg up if we need to do something...any suggestions?

Great idea about promoting a company or even maybe a charity, Help For Hero's I feel would be a worthy cause, in the current climate.

Totally agree sth, though the fabric may have to be slightly modernised, if the old saints shirts of the 60's got wet you weighed 10st heavier, not helpful on a 6-a-side pitch ;) But the design as close to the original as possible and please keep the badge nice mr Leibherr, though if you change it.....we wont argue. Just been thinking of the style of shirt to commemorate 125-years.

A traditional shirt and something like "1886-2011" underneath the badge. A nice embroidered badge rather than a cheap transfer that will wash/iron off.

I'd settle for a polo or hawaian shirt in a similar design for casual wear in cotton.

I'm guessing that the comments regarding unfinished/crap kits without company sponsors logos are coming from younger fans. It's a sign of the times that something the older generation despises, ie the spoiling of the original is feted by the 'yoof'.

A sash (Peru) or quarted (Bristol Rovers) are the ONLY options apart from stripes.

I think a logoless shirt would look incomplete because we are used to having them there- I'm sure the reaction was the same when sponsors were first added; society is generally averse to change whether it be adding something or taking it away. Personally, I would prefer no sponsor as it would be about the club and not some commercial hangers-on. I think my centenary shirt is somewhat tainted with Draper Tools written across the front.

The only possible name would be Liebherr but St Markus, I believe, is no longer involved with the crane business. His company is called MALI which would not have the same impact oinpraising our saviour.

Sad, isn't it? The advertising and marketing industries have truly won when we start thinking that brand names lend validity to a football club and not the other way round.

But it's a bold move from Nicola and, presumably, will mean we receive some much-inflated sponsorship offers for 2011-2012 now that companies know we don't have to say yes.

I can't see why any club would turn down a sponsor that is prepared to pay them good money. I thought WBA couldn't find one and therefore had plain stripes. Could it be that no-one has come forward with decent money to sponsor us?

For the reasons SaintPaul mentioned above (and I pointed out in the fb group).

A de-sponsored (word?) special edition shirt celebrating 125 years would outsell a sponsored strip by far. If sponsorship in the Championship was worth £250K per year, sponsorship in League One would be more like £125K (i presume). At £40, they will most likely be making somewhere in the region of £30 profit per shirt. That means they only need to sell 4200 (rounded up) more shirts than they normally would to make more than a sponsorship deal would be worth.

Looking at the reaction from this story, they will have no problems achieving this. There are some smart cookies at Saints now!

At the moment the sections of the more noisy fans are too fragmented and sometimes 3 songs are being sung at the same time.

A shirt without a sponsor on the front would look great. I wouldn't mind seing a more retro looking Saints shirt design though with the club crest put in the middle. Is it still Umbro design though? as after seing the lack of people wearing the latest England shirt that they have been a public relations disaster. Still I like the Leicester City design with a plain front with a sponsor across the shoulder area above the players name. Noticable but yet more descreet. The big clubs in the premiere league go for big sponsors because of the stupendous wages they have to pay. (No disrespecet to our neighbours for having jobsite plastered over the stadium). Ok get rid of a sponsor but perhaps have a local chosen charity on the back of the shirt-not the front but something new and perhaps can we be the first English club to set a trend if we have the powers to afford it. I was at the General with my boy with meningitis 5 years ago when the team visited and was grateful that they took the time to give gifts and even to my then 2 years old daughter even though she was just visiting, thank you Niemi! Well a couple of quid to go to the chosen charity or hospital per shirt sold? Give the Shirt a realistic price though... and sell even more.

Markus and his family already support local Southampton charities. I think the idea of putting one charity on the shirt would be contentous, as all charities are important, and most people have preferences. I would like to see Southampton F.C set up its own charity, and have that on the collars of the shirts, and any money raised through sales shared out amongst all children based charities in the SO postcode area

No matter, good climb. Good view, some danger, sweet reward.
Take your time, enjoy the view, find beauty in the most mundane, take the pain as your reward.

Great link, nice to see the "fashion" does not change too much.
I would personally like to see thicker stripes, it seemed to make our players look larger when tucked in & tapered, also I would love to see a V neck with popper fastenings, from a practical point of view it would be easier to put on & make clear when the shirt was pulled ( poppers come undone ) making life a little easier for the ref.
