Saints had point to prove, says Lee Barnard

Lee Barnard insisted Saints wanted to make a statement of intent as they crushed Walsall.

The Saints striker netted his second brace in three games for his new club as they demolished the Saddlers 5-1 for their biggest league win of the season.

It was a big return to form for Saints after their goalless draw at Wycombe the previous Tuesday.

That had followed the marvellous 2-0 victory against Norwich at Carrow Road – where Barnard also scored a double to open his Saints goal account.

Saints were cruising at half time against Walsall having turned the game round after conceding an early goal to lead 3-1.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

But Barnard insisted the squad did not want to merely see time out but instead use the remainder of the match to show the rest of League One just what they are capable of.

He said: “We were 3-1 up at half time but we didn’t want to just sit back and see the game out – we wanted to make it more and make a statement and I think we did that.

“It was a good performance.

“We know we needed the result and not only did we get a good result, we got a good performance as well.

“Scoring two goals, especially in front of the home fans, is nice and hopefully there are plenty more to come.”

Barnard believes the victory over Walsall has kept Saints’ slim play-offs hopes alive.

They now sit 17 points off of sixth placed Huddersfield, who they face at St Mary’s tomorrow.

If Saints beat Lee Clark’s Terriers then they can justifiably harbour realistic hopes of a storming run to reach the play-offs.

If they fail to claim the three points then the chances of them making the play-offs come May will start to look very remote.

Barnard said: “We’re aiming for the play-offs so we’ve got to believe, keep playing and getting results.

“All we can do is keep winning and then we might be able to get in there.

“We’ve got a great team, a great squad and we’re good attacking-wise.

“The boys are buzzing now, but we’ve got another big game on Tuesday.

“We need to put in the same performance.

“They (Huddersfield) are a good team and they are where we want to be, so we have to beat them to get anywhere near them.

“And if we play like we did against Walsall then I’m sure we’ll win.”

I think no one other than saints fans thinks there is any chance of saints making the play offs. an alot of us don´t. Its a slender hope but if we beat Hudddersfield then the gap is not so great. They are a good side but so are we and we owe them. They have been bragging on how they will come down and thrash us again.

Get in there Barney!! When he first played for us iu thought his play style was too similar to RL, how wrong was I LOL!! They both compliment each other perfectly, i just hope we can make the play offs now and keep them both together, because the Championship wont be able to handlt them both on the pitch at the same time either!!
As for the recent AP rumours .... Radio Solent broadcast that he had stormed out, without backing up the statement further, so hopefully all the surrounding speculation is nothing but us all just panicking a bit!! Lets face it, we've been so used to bad news in the past, that we almost expect it sometimes! Im sure it was nothing and AP will be leading our boys Tuesday night, for another emphatic win!

I think the level headed approach the team seem to be taking is a very positive sign. A win tomorrow night and the gap to6th place reduces by another 3-points.
It's going to be an intense few weeks with a trip to Wembley in between the melee of the final few games.
A distraction? Not too sure as it is a bit of a double edged sword. Winning breeds confidence - but players will be thinking about Wembley and not wanting to miss out. After all for many of them it will be the one and only chance of playing there.
Some big games coming up - but the truth will be known against Hartlepool at SMS on the Tuesday before the Paint Pot Trophy!
Whatever the outcome (and this is not an excuse for the team not to go all out on every front) this has been a great season. We now have a team to be proud of, players who want to be here with ambition. Where were they when we needed them back in 2005/6?
Take a deep breath and count to 10 before being too negative. Many thanks to all the people at SFC who effectively saved our club.
Being a Saints fan was the only option for me living by The Dell - and the people of Southampton get back to following their home team.
I truly believe great days ahead, and promotion this year would be the icing on the cake!

I reckon if connolly was fit ,just in case lambo or barney get crocked ,the play-offs would be looking more than possible, its consistency of standards that has to be at the root of any success, so a win tuesday is critical for that reason alone.
As for any AP rumours, I think he is a lot smarter than some give him credit for, if he had jumped up and down after that storming win,it could have led to complacency, but he,s pushing them,to repeat it,so to give the attitude that they "should " be doing that now was right.
I hope he,s here for the long haul, the transformation in terms of expectation is remarkable, and that is mainly due to his very astute signings and serious attitude.

Hello Everyone!
Just got back from Thailand last night and watched the Wallsall game on Saints Player.
What a fantastic Team performance!
Whilst the result against Wycombe was a huge dissappointment and surprise for me I loved the teams immediate reaction.
I believe that A.P.'s plan to get to the final of the J.P.Trophy has born fruit as there will now be intense rivalry amongst the squad.
Surely they will all relish the prospect of playing in a Wmbley Final and this hopefully will prove to be the fuel needed to realise the Playoffs!
Fingers crossed for tommorrow and I'm not throwing the betting slips away just yet.
In fact I think I'll get the wife to iron them for me. No bookie should be asked to accept crumpled betting slips in exchange for such a large sum of money.:-)

Not sure where to begin?
Lost a game of pool to a ladyboy in my favourite bar "Jungle Juice". As is required and expected this left me indebted to the tune of a drink.
On approaching the bar I found myself with a dillema!
It seemed wrong to ask for a drink for "HER" and equally wrong to ask for a drink for "HIM" To say "IT" was completely out of the question!!
I resolved the issue with I believe both tact and diplomacy.
I asked for a drink for this excellent Pool Player. Phew ....That was close!
Geezer only stung me for a Pint of Lager!!!

I whole heartily agree, as Saints fans, our expectations currently are understandably high. However, let us not forget the plain simple fact of where we started from, which was with minus 10 points.
For Saints to have achieved what they have so far, is in itself remarkable, given the late start by both club ownership and that of AP, the manager.
So forget the negativity, it's counter productive, if Saints do achieve the play-offs, superb. They would still have to get through them, so as the very old saying goes "Gently gently catchy monkey". I hope that comment is still pc.
I'm looking forward to north London,COYR's

A great win and a boost for the confidence !! That team looks good and has belief. Thye are going to need it.

But now the dust is settling the reality is becoming crystal clear, if we don't beat Huddersfield tomorrow we aren't getting to the play offs.

If we beat them we will be 14 points behind them with two games in hand and a possible chance of catching them if we keep winning and they slip up. If Huddersfield win then we will be 19 points behind Swindon with 14 games left and I just think that's a bridge too far.

The challenge is just overwhelming. I WILL KEEP THE FAITH AS ALWAYS, IF IT CAN BE DONE THEN LETS HOPE IT WILL BE DONE.

But for me, tomorrow is a major milestone - its win or bust.

The 17 point gap is not too great IF we win on Tuesday.
.
Currently we have 9 home and 6 away, while Huddersfield have 6 home and 7 away. If we win on Tuesday and the 2 HOME games in hand that gap will only be 8 points.
.
If you then look at their home games, they still have to play 3 of the top 4 sides yet - Norwich, Charlton & Colchester.
.
PRESSURE can be a funny thing in Football and that 8 point gap could soon disappear.
.
This is only possible if Saints fans BELIEVE and turn up on Tuesday night.
.
p.s. The story about AP early departure from SMS on Sat is "He is having some issues in his family life".
So a big cheer for him on Tuesday night as well.

...fascinating creatures... . I mean, I don't find them attractive - it's just confusing.

As for tomorrow, a win would be huge. I was at the game at their place and we were really poor and took a lot of flak from their fans, and some bloke shouted "Wait till we get you back to St Mary's" at them. At the time I thought "Yeah, they'll probably beat us again" but now I think we could do them - it would be a huge measure of how far we've come.

I think about this a lot, and there are pros and cons each way. If we stay in League 1 then we do get to build and stabilise and emerge into the championship as a stronger and more settled squad, but the downside is that some of our promising youngsters might be tempted to leave. I've no doubt that it we do go up a division then Markus will release the funds to bring in extra quality. If you look at how well we've bought for a League 1 team then imagine where we'd be going shopping once we go up. I think we'd be bringing in players from the premiership.
(The only downside of going up this year is we'd have to go to Fratton Park next season - ew!)

Saints had 3 points to prove not 1! This is about winning games between now and the end of the season...it was great to get a perfect performance in front of the home fans but this team needs to learn how to graft results on bad pitches to stand any chance of the playoffs.

It's great to have the players we have now though...they can only get better as a team!

AP's done as good a job of putting this side together as any...he needs the full support now till the end of the season! We don't want to have a Lowe sacking mentality...it was always going to be tough this year starting from where we did.

We aren't going up this year, shame but too far away from us now.
We have drawn too many games that we should have won, due either to complacency or lack of urgency.
Maybe the guys aren't being pushed to play for promotion this year?.
Alan has always said he prioritsed the cup games.
Agree with ST Retford, players we have may not want another year in the third tier.
Looks like some big clubs are going to drop down here as well so its not nailed on that we will boss the division.
This year should have been an all out push for promotion and the JPT is nice but ultimately worth sweet FA.
The longer we stay down in this league, the more people forget about us, and we become a little club.
Like Sheffield Wednesday, Like Notts Forest, Like Leeds, Ipswich, Norwich , Leicester.
All arguably bigger clubs than us are now replaced by the likes of Hull,Burnley,Stoke and Wigan.
I don't want our club to become another forgotten "giant" , we need to be ripping up the League and making waves wherever we go, not drawing at Wycombe.
Saturdays game was the kind of performance we need for people ( except Skate Claridge) to take notice, and remember who we are and where we come from.
I just hope AP has the vision to take us forward, to lead us back to where we belong and show everyone there IS only one team in Hampshire and its wearing RED and White.

How can one game be win or bust.
The season is 46 games and we have
played 31 and have 15 games more to play.
We are still 17 points behind 6th placed Huddersfield and that is a big ask for any team to make up that defecit.
It is consistency over the next 15 games that COULD see us in the play-offs. And we must hope that some of the other teams above us lose there way just like Leeds have done recently.
I agree with IF IT CAN BE DONE THEN LETS HOPE IT WILL BE DONE,
but I cannot agree tomorrow is win or bust.

The 'ladyboys'. They watch Pompey don't they?
Anyway, will we reach the playoffs?
Unlikely.
We need to put together the mother of all good winning runs, whilst relying on 3 or 4 teams above us to suffer the opposite, something that isn't happening just yet.
If we were in 7th, with the same gap, then maybe pressure could be piled on Huddersfield, but with Millwall, MK Dons and even Bristol Rovers ahead of us, there could be too many bodies to crawl over.
I see that Claridge has written off any team outside the top 7, so making it to the top 6 would taste even sweeter, knowing that he got it wrong.

I wonder if lightning could strike twice ... 66 to 1 for 5-1 to Saints on Saturday, I wouldn't mind a repeat of that :-) mind you Udders Field are a better side than Walsall, I'll go 3-2 at about 25 to 1, mustn't be too greedy.

Alicesdad wrote: A great win and a boost for the confidence !!
How can one game be win or bust. The season is 46 games and we have played 31 and have 15 games more to play. We are still 17 points behind 6th placed Huddersfield and that is a big ask for any team to make up that defecit. It is consistency over the next 15 games that COULD see us in the play-offs. And we must hope that some of the other teams above us lose there way just like Leeds have done recently. I agree with IF IT CAN BE DONE THEN LETS HOPE IT WILL BE DONE, but I cannot agree tomorrow is win or bust.
You have a good point about it being one match in 46. and maybe win or bust might have been OTT. Fair play - it was a bit extreme.

It's all in the maths really though. My point is that I have noted that at this point of the season the lower part of the top six have slightly more points than they have had in recent seasons. This suggests hat 76 might not be the finishing line this season. It might easily be 78.

With 15 games left we have to get another 35 points to get 76. So its more than consistency, its a must-win situation every game and if we are beaten then its relevant who beats us.

12 wins would get us to 77pts.

We cannot afford to lose against teams in the top six 12 wins out of 15 matches ... Not impossible - with our team we should be winning most games now. But how much would you wager on that happening? I'd love it if we did it !

So, as fans, we are left with just having to sit tight and take each game as it comes. It may not be win or bust as I first said.. But I still think that if we dont win tomorrow realistically we are going to be "close but unlucky".

Am not happy that the Echo posted my comment and took out the bit that made it look like I was having a go at Cortese. My point was that he is smart enough to know that Pardew is the man for the job and what I was basically getting at was people spreading rumours that suggested the two had had a fall out, but what got printed was I suppose partly my fault because of the way I wrote it out but still. If your reading Cortese and Pardew I hope you stay at St Mary's for a long time because you are both the best thing to happen to this club in years, maybe even decades. I'm glad that all those rumours are looking like nothing more than just rumours now, but I'm sure there was no problems between Cortese and Pardew I didn't think that for a moment until people started suggesting it. More likely is that Pardew was unhappy with the way the press have been treating him (having a go at him tuesday then suddenly praising him about saturday like they can't make their mind up) and/or Merringtons comments. Still lets put it all in the past now and move on.

The adminstrator appointed by Poopey would appear to have the same football acumen as the past owners.
He thinks he can go to the Premiership and make a case for not getting the 9 points deducted. Wrong.
He thinks he can go to the Premiership and get them to let him sell players outside of the transfer window. Wrong.
He thinks he can beat the VAT man; ha, ha.
.
I'd like to see the judge ask for those who were in the court a few weeks back, to be present to explain why they put forward a business plan that was supposed to show how they were going to come up with the funds to pay the VAT man; and why in the mean time they decided to put the club into administration, assuming that wasn't part of their plan.
.

Why would any manager who has funds and the backing of the board even concider going to a club in Administration.
Crystal Palace let Warnock go so they could get the compensation. I wouldn't be surprised if they do not appoint another manager but temporarily promote from within, thus keeping costs down.
I do not think there is any chance of A.P going anywhere.

Alan Pardews latest interview on the os shows the man and the team are clearly focussed on winning each game as it comes. Hoping to win at least 3 of the next 4, preferable all of them.

This man has his feet on the ground and his team flying high at the moment. Pards believes the team was soundly out classed by the Terriers last time.. but now we are being primed up ready to witness where Saints deserve to be in this league.

"They absolutely waltzed past us, they were fitter, stronger, better technically than us on the day and could have won by more, but I don't reckon that will be the case on Tuesday and it will be a good game."

I fancy us at home against anyone.

"I know that this is a good enough team. I don't know if we are going to make it (to the play-offs), but we need to win as many games as we can. We will need a bit of luck and a bit of luck with results probably as well, but it can happen, I've seen it happen. My experience tells me to win the next game and see what happens then."

The last line says it all.

We'll be with you Pards.. I'll be in my new Red & Whites arrived today with NZ Saints on the back... so if anyone is missing a spinnaker from down the marina tough SMS needed the material :) sssshhhh the missus hasn't seen the credit card bill yet
