Southampton fans walking from St Mary's to Wembley for JPT final

Saints fans who plan to walk to Wembley final get their hands on the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Saints Saints fans who plan to walk to Wembley final get their hands on the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Saints

IT began as a flippant comment on the Daily Echo website, but ten Saints fans are now preparing for an 80- mile trek to Wembley.

Lifelong fan Graham Harris, 31, threatened to walk to the stadium if Saints reached the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final following the Southern Area quarter final win against Charlton at St Mary’s in November.

Now he is keeping to his word – and is being joined on the three-day trip by nine other Saints fans, five of whom he met through dailyecho.co.uk/saints.

Graham met forum friends Brett Shepherd, David Foot, Glynn Root and Tim Patston for the first time at West Quay on Monday, where the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy was on display ahead of the final on Sunday, March 28.

He will also be joined on the walk by Saints-supporting pals Gary Pompa, Ray Mead, Wilson Massey, Tony Dyke and Daimon Brown.

The group will walk from St Mary’s to Basingstoke two days before the final, then to Runnymede, Surrey before trekking the final 20 miles on the morning of the big game against Carlisle United in time for the 1.30pm kick off.

They are hoping to raise £5,000 for male cancer charity Everyman and have a fund raising night at the King Alfred Pub, St Mary’s on March 20.

Graham, who now lives in Brighton, said: “We were downheartened at the state of our football club a year ago but this has been a phenomenon.

“Once we got to Wembley the lads really jumped on board this through the Echo forums.

We’re really looking forward to setting out from St Mary’s and having a beer at Wembley on the 28th.”

Hi guys - I'm the idiot that came up with this one - so thanks to all that have donated so far, but just as a little reminder - if every Saint that is going to wembley donates just 50p - that totals 20k.

Some Pompey fans did a similar thing in 2008 and they raised 4k. We're currently on £1300, so please help us beat that rabble and prove that there's one team in Hampshire

COYR!!!

Good effort lads!

I really thought you were all talk when this idea started on the forum, so credit to you for carrying it through! You're setting yourself a pretty tough trek for Sunday morning though, so set off early!

If only I could get a ticket, I'd join you... (mind you it's only an hour's walk from where I am!). I'll definitely make a donation though, really good cause - they deal with some big illnesses that don't get the attention they should.

Hope the club are going to give you some coverage too, and don't get all huffy about it originating on the pages of the Echo?

I wonder if any of those feckless Carlisle fans are planning on matching our brave lads' efforts and walking from Brunton Park? If not, it means they HATE charity and actually want people to suffer.

But well done boys. I think about 40,000 Saints fans will buy you a beer when you get to Wembley.

Done my bit, just wish so many of those moaning about thier tickets not arriving yet had donated a quid each. They are happy to pay £3 booking fee, but if 44K had pledged £1 each ??? Come on you true red and whites, put your money where your mouth is. I do not have a ticket and will happily watch in a pub somewhere knowing that the money I could have spent on tickets, transport etc has gone to a good cause, and made the effort of the walkers worth while. Even if you can afford up to £58 for a ticket, £25 for the coach, £4 plus for a beer, £6 or more for a burger, through a few quid i for the silly sods that are spending thee days walking to Wembley.
