Pardew won't be too gutted if Saints don't make top six

ALAN Pardew believes Saints can be promoted this season – but will not be devastated if they don’t.

The Saints boss, whose team are in a rich vein of form going into tomorrow’s match at Tranmere, is philosophical in his approach.

He recognises that a team capable of scoring five goals in back-to-back games could yet make a charge to the top six, despite entering this weekend 14 points adrift.

But, for the long term success of the team, Pardew, below, can see that advantages could be gained by spending another season in League One in which Saints would hopefully win the title.

He said: “I want to get in the play-offs and I feel this team can get promoted – there is no doubt in my mind about that.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

“But another year of winning wouldn’t be a bad thing for this young team.

“I’m not going to be sitting here absolutely devastated if we don’t get in there because I know this team will go very, very well next year.

“We’ve got a lot of young players who might need to get used to winning rather than creeping in, getting through the play-offs and then find themselves in the Championship where we’re stepping up a level and not having it our own way.

“When you get it your own way, when you keep winning and you go up a division, if you can have 18 months of that, you really believe you’re going to win no matter what the opposition are.

“I don’t think we’ve got that belief yet but it’s growing.”

Pardew currently has his wish for the remainder of the season with Saints in the top two form sides in League One.

Scoring five goals against both Walsall and Huddersfield as well as beating league leaders Norwich underlines the quality of the side but Pardew knows Saints need to keep players fit to have a chance of a top six finish this season.

“If we can keep some of the key players fit – because all teams have key players, Drogba for Chelsea, Lambert for us – then I expect to be in the top form of the top two,”

said Pardew.

“Whether that is going to be enough to get in the play-offs I don’t know.

“We had a slow start, a sticky part in the middle where we were drawing games - without losing - that we perhaps should have won with big cup runs and we’ve ended up in a position now where we’re a long way off.

“We’re going to need the opposition now to lose and draw games and one of them maybe having a sticky run for us to get in.”

I'm not too confident about us reaching the play-offs, but one thing that could swing things for us is the depth and quality of our squad compared to the teams above us.

We are entering the run-in and I can see some of our rivals faltering due to injuries and suspensions etc.. and being unable to replace players with the sort of calibre needed to push on in the final games.

I won't be know where near dissapointed if we don't make the playoffs. We have had a season full of promise and excitement and I agree with Pardew about we will be in a better place next season to be able to win this league so there will be no shame on where we end up now. League 1 does seem to be the most competitive it has been for a while so even previous seasons points totals may not be enough to reach the playoffs.

SW draw city, I hope not!

As with you two I agree it would be nice would not be to up set myself but the other teams mmust be looking over at us and thinking are we glad that they started off with the -10

As some one has said then next 4 games if we can go with all wins and see what the other teams do.

What I can see is it all being on the last home game and if that is so 32k + at SMS and us needing to win and someone needing to lose so there would be no finger nails by the end of that game

But this is the best season for a lonng time it's good being a Saints fan so!!!!

Getting into the top six is totally dependent on Huddersfield losing 3 more games than us and Millwall losing 4 more than us.
They both have excellent home form, Hudders haven't lost and Millwall have lost just once, so if they are to slip up it may be on their travels.
I think MK Dons and Bristol Rovers are catchable, over 14 games, and don't expect them to close the gap on the top 6.
I disagree with AP's comments that it may be too soon for some of the players to get promoted.
The manner in which we have beaten Norwich, Walsall and Huddersfield indicates that, when we are on our game, we are a cut above the best in this league, and by that reckoning should be quite comfortable in the middle of the CCC.

whaaat? Minus 10 points, no pre-season to speak of, the need to get a whole new side (more or less) to gel and to restore the confidence of those (mostly youngsters like Lallana, Scheiderlin & James, but including Kelvin, too) who suffered under the disastrous Dutch regime last season.

Pards and Radhi's interviews on the player video show real determination and planning. they know what the maths are but are concentrating only on one game at a time.
Dean Hammond says the team is gelling the best he's seen a team gel.
Radhi and Jose are loving the pairing and are becoming instinctive together.
When the Echo first put up the survey it showed a slim majority believed we would make the play offs..

I stopped believing in us making the p/os after the Orient first half, believing the team had not consistency or real team constitution. We leaked regularly, couldn't score from corners and kept missing easy chances (still do to a degree) but Saints have suddenly sparked since Jose joined the team and Lee Barnard has become Rickie's necessary partner. We can do it.

No need to flap about it but we can and that's a chance we should hang onto as long as we can... go for it.

I think AP's bang on the money! It was always going to take a while to get his own team in and playing his way and with the deduction and the psychological (spell checked) disadvantage that comes with it we might just miss out even with a storming finish. Take it on the chin and rip up league 1 next year! My only concern is hanging onto players but surely the likes of Ricky were told when they signed that it's a 5 year plan and that another season in div 1 was always a possibility. Not that I'm givng up, I still think we have a good chance.

Dead right , promotion this year would be awesome.
We definatly have a team now that would challenge in the Championship, and as said before if in this div we would boss it.
There may however be a test of the resolve of the men i charge if big offers are put in for our stars.
I would hope any advances would be rebuffed.
This team with have looks the strongest we have had for a long long time, and i can see a spirt reminicant of the Strachan era.

This is a bit like the 'man city' saga... Mark Hughes was given money to spend, and bar one flop signing, he spent very well, signed the likes of Bridge, Barry, and Tevez... but they didnt start as the arabs expected, and he was sacked. In came Mancini, results would be better, at least thats what the arabs assumed... that hasnt been the case. Why you ask? because putting together a group of good players doesnt effectively produce a ''team'' - to build an entire new team it takes time as well as money, and when you sign 13 new players, who have never even met eachother before, and put them into a game as professional as english football... you cant expect success over night. We have had some bad games and some bad results... but now that we have gelled as a team, we can improve on where our weak points are and then push on next season... -10 at the start and an entire squad rebuild is a long term investment. Its not a case of signing everyone who the fans consider to be good, im sure city fans were jumping up and down over the Robinho signing... but he hardly performed did he?

If we fail to make the Playoffs this year:so what? Win the Div next year and cruise the championship the next and"BINGO"!!!.....BA
CK WHERE WE BELONG!!!!
What kills me is the stage management of the Whole endevour worried that the "TEAM" might not deliver what the fans want and the associated fear that we,The Fans might leave in droves. It aint going to happen cos we all know that the only way is up!!!!!!!!!

My point was NOT personal, and was never intended to be.
All I meant was that since we beat Walsall, then Huddersfield nearly every comment on here has been backing the Saints and AP 100%.
Yours has been the only negative comments and I believe that all stems back to not being able to get a Wembley ticket. Up until then all your comments have been complimentary.

Not on Facebook and No dictionary, I was lucky to be educated before Mrs T got in and wrecked the education system, my sense of humour carries a Government Health Warning with it, it is vital that you don't take me too seriously.

A good speach by AP, he wants to make the play-offs like all of us but is still trying to keep everyones feet on the ground and not raise too many hopes. Nothing more than I expect, but if we don't go up this season then next season should a joy to watch for the fans probably more than this season.

I would love us to go up just so we can put the skates back in their plaice (intentional) next year however what I also like at the mo is seeing the score comming up on the TV just to see how many we have won by and if it means seeing it in div 1 for another season so be it, it is still a great feeling

I not particulary bothered what division we`re in at the moment,im just loving the buzz around the club and seeing all the happy beaming faces of the fans after the match means more to me than agonising over league tables and the odd bad result. We`re get there in the end,im a patient man and life surely teaches us the best comes to those who wait. Its a bit like those daft women who after screwing you down to a hefty mortgage then expect you to turn the perfectly reasonable home youve bought into some ponces palace literally in a matter of months!

Getting back to the above article, Alan Pardew is not being negative, pessimistic or any other adjective you could think up, in fact he is being more realistic than most fans who post on here, he knows that even if we win all our remaining games at 5-0 it will not guarantee a play off place. We will keep on playing good football whatever the teams above us do. That, as fans is all we can ask of the manager.

If we don't go up we can still enjoy the prospect of next season. Some of the out of contract players and people we don't want will be gone and possibly 1 or 2 more quality will be in. What a team we might be then. Winning is winning, and it feels good, regardless of the league you are in!

Particularly loving the pricing.
Just think...if we stay down, we can compete (and hopefully retain) the JPT.
I don't think Saints will have anything to fear from the other teams coming down either. We WILL be the strongest team in the division should we not make the play-offs this season. FACT!
