Yes the ref seems to have had a mare, but if we have days when chances go begging, we can only blame ourselves.
Seems to me that Lallana could have scored 2, Barnard another 2 plus other chances went begging.
I said at half time that I hoped the first chance of the 2nd half didn't fall to Lallana, but alas it did and he didn't take it.
The ONLY positive is that the gap between us and 6th place hasn't increased.

Gutted at full time but over it now, another false dawn, but not surprised, don't blame the ref, no bad pitch to blame this time, let's forget about play-offs this season (who were we trying to kid anyway!), this is the difference between good and great teams... roll on next year, although we have never done well against so called lesser sides so not quite sure what will change next season because we seem to consider most sides in L1 as 'lesser' sides?

Ok, so we can't play against 'lesser' teams or on rugby pitches..... mmm let me think... Wembley - Carlisle a 'lesser' side, pitch - considered by Milner and Rooney amongst others as worse than some lower league pitches.... will it turn out to be such a good day out? I fear of complacency in the ranks once again :-(

No doubt we will hammer Leeds on Sat and once again rue our away day failings (with the exception of Norwich)

Anyway, I will as always take the rough with the smooth when it comes to Saints. 10 goals in the previous 2 games was a nice high :-)

saintmark1977 says...
6:40pm Sat 6 Mar 10

I wish some of the posters would get real.A play off place taking into account the ten point deduction was always going to be very difficult and in all honesty vanished at the start of the New Year with some poor results away from home.Mr Pardew now has the remainder of this seasons away games as a "dry run" without too much pressure in order to prepare for the same type of games next season. The pitches will be as bad and the refs will be as poor. What needs to change is his formula to make one point into three.

St Retford says...

Lets keep the faith brothers and sisters - consider how well the team has done since getting the 10 point penalty. There is a long term project underway we have a day out at Wembley which wont be a Tranmere or Wycombe pitch and lets not benchmark against the false Pompey scum result today .. if there were any justice they would be out of business. I was there. Second half all decisons did seem to go Tranmere's way. The back pass that wasn't given was the worst decision. Also, Barnard was nudged, which should have been a pen. Can't comment on their pen since it was down the other end. Ref did get Fonte's dive right. Deserved to be booked. He got a case of the Hassan Kachloul's there. Anyway, its a reality check. Very well run infrastructure, loaded, great squad, fantastic consistent attendences, top half of this league, and the small matter of at least 44,000 of us going to a Wembley final...thats a final skates, not a little semi!! In summing up, first league defeat since December isnt all that bad, and yep we can still make the P/O's, well happy :) APRandWA!!

Evening all - just back from Tranmere via Bradford and the Indian Take away!
Where do I start?
Good turn out of Saints fans, great facilities next door to the ground (Mersey Cliupper) and a total numpty of a ref!
It would not be so hard to take the defeat but he was so inconsistent it was hard to believe! Not minutes before he gave them a penalty - an incident in the Tranmere box - Barnard just about to rise like a salmon and was shoved in the back and he waved play on! Can't comment too much on the penalty given at the other end - but from the protests I guess the lads feel hard done by.
The ref was not worthy of the name! Honestly he missed every challenge on our lads - and every 50/50 he penalised our players.
Can't fault the effort but you could tell the players were upset at the end surrounding the ref!
The was so tw@t in the crowd to the left of the fans with a Pompey flag - he took some stick and was eventually led away by the boys in blue! Another one of their fans to the right offered the ball to one of the lads to drop it - pick it up again and drop it again (time wasting) - he and his mates then got quite confrontational with Puncheon (I think) - he was led away too!
Disappointed but can't fault the effort - there were at least 12-players against us most of the game and sometimes 13!
I am now almost certain another season in this league is ahead - but to be honest I don't really care because the places we visit are friendly, good value for money, and good fun. You can stick the Premier League with all their prawn sandwiches and plastic fans where the sun don't shine!
The flag was christened and may appear on the Football League show tonight.
It was a top day - and even managed to drop friends from Harrogate into Bradford - I drive past in just over the hour and they were going to train it taking nearly 3-hours via Liverpool Lime Street!
The Saints family is alive and well.
Not bothered reading any comments above - I expect Pardew to be fuming along with several senior players - but you can't beat the ref! Just our luck now to win every game until the end of the season just to prove something (here's hoping!).
Sorry I can't be more positive - but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Sorry I can't be more positive - but that's the way it goes sometimes.
cheers...a good read from somone who was there !

Evening all! Pompey fan in peace! Was looking for some Pompey news which this site has been full of for the last the weeks! Quiet today though! As much as you dropped points today thankfully for you others did too! Still a longshot but you could still make it! Pardew has done a good job but will be interesting to see if your board accept just outside of the playoffs! Anyway, we'll all chipper this side of the M27! Happy days I guess!

Evening mate! For tonight, yes we are very happy! A manager we love, a team who give 100%, the rest of it out of our control! But another trip to Wembley to come! Didn't fancy us today, Brum are decent so yes happy and chipper! The rest can wait for another day!

Still talking of the play offs?
I think it would be a bigger miracle if Tony Blair was to be re-elected - well he is the Prime Minister isn't he?
Strange - Leeds obviously don't want to go up automatically, and we seem desperate to do so. There are players wearing the shirt now that are desperte to win - and obviously play at the next level.
All I can say lads is be patient - just keep winning make a statement this year and just do it next season...we still love you!
If I had one wish it would be for Mr Cortese to have a bit of patience and give Pardew (and his squad) until December 2010. We are already streets ahead of most sides in this League - we need a level playing field top prove it!

Now that's a question! In all seriousness No! And I know that most on here would say I was lying! Fair play to Saints, you're doing OK - but if you look at the history books and I love that stuff! We're 2 clubs of a similar size(!?) who have pretty much experienced similar fortunes over the years but at different times! Times will come round. I know you're all happy with everything at the moment off the pitch, but we were too! Things come round especially in south-coast football! I could go on, but would possibly offend which is not why I'm on here! We're in the whatever now, but I'm a Pompey optimist!

Hi

I was at the game today and to be frank we didn't deserve anything as Tranmere didn't let us play the way we had in the last two games. They defended in force and harried us.
The ref had a mare but if we'd played better we would have cancelled his errors out but we didn't
However Saints fans you were a disgrace over their fan who who was wearing a Pompey shirt and waving a Pompey flag. Whilst you were giving him grief they went and scored. Why don't you all grow up and get over it! He however should be ashamed for putting his kids through that.
Also I think the way that many of you show little respect for the home fans venue, ammenities and officials is shameful. We acted like a bunch of arrogant b*****ds today! I don't expect many of you to agree with me.

As I say can see what you're saying, but Pompey can be viable. Remember when Mandaric was Chairman we made a profit - until Gaydamak took over. So we have a viable business - probably as viable as you! Have friends on your side, and they seem to cling to things like grounds and training grounds as if that's what really matters whilst you've slid down the divisions- whilst I see why, and we would actually wish for them, priority for me is a viable business, with a competitive team (possible for us), not producing players and selling them on!

Bunman,

As a Saints fan I would not swap our position for yours. After the fear of going nearly extinct, I would not swap that instability (I think yours is even worse) for Premiership football and a Wembley semi.

As to Pompey being a viable business, true one day it was, and one day it will be again. But at rpesent, your debts are ridiculous and theyre not even over all our property. If an investor comes in he will have to buy a new stadium, new players (longer you're in admin the worse your already depleted squad will be) and your debts are only going to get worse (NI each month etc).

Truth be told, I think you'll be lucky if you stay in Championship next year.

Yeah we're happy enough at the moment but the is definitely pressure on us to go back up. We expect to go up automatically next year. You do find out who the real fans are to be fair, and also get to meet some real ones on your travels.

Granted it is a nice consolation, I'm not slagging it off. I would love to be there, I'm just saying I prefer stability. Others on here may disagree, like others at your club might say they'd rather have stability...although whether anyone comes out on record and says that is another matter!!

What is the general feeling about the administrator at FP? Reckon he's legit? From what I read at the time it all sounded ok cos Balram only got it 'cos Al Faraj defaulted but I suppose taxman is like a dog with a bone. What has happened to Faraj? Fahim stays in Press but he's vanished.

Btw, I know it seems I'm on a wound up but I'm genuinely interested about what Pompey fans are thinking, like I'm interested to know what Palace fans think about their predicament.

Cheers

Guys, Tell me what you think about this.

It was a complete missed opportunity today with the top 6 losing and if we could have capitalised, would have put us in an excellent position. But it is an away game gone!! However, as we lost this game and did not draw it; pardew will kick some f*cking arse and we will beat leads. if some of the top 6 lose next week, then well still have that hope!

I just wonder if it is complacency that makes us slip up against the bottom teams? We smash the top teams, then I am sure they think a win will just happen. As for playoffs, I am dubious we will get there this season. 15 points off 6th place, one game in had...I am hoping we will keep the squad together for next season so that we can become like Norwich. Cross off another loss!(albeit an unexpected one!

I know the wins against Norwich and Uddersfield were superb, and maybe unexpected, so 4 points gained prom possible draws there.
But a big 3 points lost yesterday.

Went to this one yesterday, about 6 hours there and 6 hours back, the police were acting like Millwall had just arrived, and well, a pretty **** day overall. The pitch was hardly decent either, but it is to be expected. Man of the match? id have to follow Derby county's example and say that the fans were the true performers yesterday, a fantastic crowd for what is a hell of a long trip, and for 90 minutes we outsang Tranmeres dismal home crowd. Oh, and the small contingent of Portsmouth fans who would rather watch us play tranmere than support they're own club in an FA cup quarter final (clearly the best fans in the world then!). There were alot of arrests from what i could see, the merseyside police seemed intent on creating a scene over nothing... the only thugs at the match were the portsmouth lot, goading the saints fans constantly... though they didnt seem keen on stopping that!. on the field, we had some moments of class, but overall we were relatively poor... and what annoys me more is that they didnt look like they cared out there, with the mass number of saints fans either forking out a fortune for the saints travel club, or in petrol money (some in hotels even), i dont think its alot to ask for a bit of commitment from the team? of course i will always support the saints, through thick and thin... and if we stay down this year, ill be planning away trips to carlisle and Hartlepool, as well as the nearer matches. Very true, still on, but the divide from us to 6th still remains.
When ever we win, they lose. and when we lose/draw they win.
We are relying on a lot of teams having a very bad run in.
Dropped points on "easy" away games have scuppered our chance this year i believe.
We can but learn though, and i'm sure it will be addressed for the next campaign.
We play great football at times ,, but we need to also play dirty, rough slog it up the middle stuff to match these lower teams.
I think all saints fans with a memory expected some kind of blip yesterday, but i fully expect us to turn Leeds over.

Now our play-off hopes are all but over, I hope we can relax and play the sort of football against Leeds that we saw against Walsall and Huddersfield. Gutted with yesterday's result, but still plenty of positives to be taken from this season. I've said all along that the play-offs were a long shot and think my prediction (after the draw at Wycombe) of us ending with 68 or 69pts and finishing 8th or 9th won't be too far wrong.

Ironically the teams we are trying to catch also lost, so the playoff situation hasnt changed, except for two facts - huddersfield are now losing, and swindon were destroyed at home and a long unbeaten run. So...home to swindon is potentially easier than it was. We still have one or two games in hand AND we have still played more away games than our rivals, so we can catch up six points or so against our rivals, and after that, its going to whether we can keep winning while swindon, millwall and huddersfield drop points.

I havent given up hope yet.....

Our away form isnt that good (obviously) but after a wicked deflection off fonte for their first and the dodgiest penalty you will ever see for their second, are we down hearted -NO.
Its that pain in the a** word "consistency " that will get us promoted eventually.
Cant help thinking that away tactics are called for,4-5-1 and mug teams for the points.
Barnard looks to be settling in well, and looks like a good poacher ..
This season was always about consolidation, but if results go our way,who knows.
There was a post recently that said it wouldnt be a bad thing to have another season in this div to build a side,I agree with that, but just one more season here would be enough.

I have always enjoyed your posts, I sadly predicted in 2004 that we would end up playing Leeds within 5 years.

Did Sir Fergie, Jose,Wenger, shankley, Big Mac etc win anything with a Director of football, have we all so small memories and the fiasco that followed the appointment of Clive Woodward as Director of Football that was one of the many reasons why this club went bust.

Let’s keep the football side of things simple for now and get behind Pardew.

Leave the politics to politicians we all know what a bunch they are! Pardew is a hard working honest manager with a winning mentality! My prediction, saints finish on 80 points and play Charlton at Wembley in the play off final. We will go up this season ! COYR
Good post Pat, my feelings exactly

I think our poor away form against relatively poor teams coincided with the change from 451 to 442 for away matches. It certainly sounded from the commentary that we got outplayed in midfield for much of the second half yesterday. Any comments from those who were there?

I know its easy to be an armchair manager, but it seemed to me we were much more effective away from home earlier on in the season, when we started as 4-5-1 and then went to 4-4-2 second half , where we then added pace with antonio and connolly and steamed roll the opposition after running them ragged in the first half.

I'm not a fan on dof's. I said wait until we see how we cope with the lesser placed teams. We have to play; Orient Oldham Carlisle Brighton H'pool Yeoville S'thend and Gillingham. If we drop points against these team how will you feel?

The Chairman indicated at the start of the season that as he is not a football man he may appoint one later to give Pards support. Pards was positive about it.

If the guys can't beat the rest of the lower placed teams this year then some help must come because how else would Nicola think we can beat them next year.

If not a dof what changes need to happen to ensure the physical teams get beaten and we don't drop points -
Pards quote after Exeter "We need to come up with a game plan to win these games".

I can be over the top with optimism. I love and endorse the work done so far but it is time for the team to seriously kick the butts of these teams. There absolutely has to be pressure applied.

If not a dof (I certainly back off that idea if folk say that is not the way to go) then what should the Chairman do.

If we don't make it this year I want to be certain that these unfancied teams will be put to the hatchet next year from the outset.

So what is the game plan to do it.
Which may be a mute question if we smash all the above in the run to the end of the season.

Laugh but NZ last won the Rugby WC in 1987 despite being the #1 rated side most years... because they don't play well against teams that run the ball at them strongly. Most here say the team lost it's mongrel!

Is a bit of mongrel what Saints need?

Morning Dan.
I see your point about More Mongrel but do not feel that our problem against Tranmere was a lack of determination.
Rather than appointing a DOF I would like to see a decent psychologist appointed.
I dont know if we have one on the backroom staff?
Listening to the game on saturday on Player it sounded to me that we created many chances but were unable to take advantage of them.
I sensed that we were panicking in front of goal.
From my own experience of spending 25years trying to Master Golf I have discovered that Less effort can produce better results.
Trying too hard to succeed can have the opposite effect.
A balance between determination,concen
tration and relaxation would be ideal.

I hear you Harley.. personally I'm not keen on psychology in sport, life coaches .. The Abs have gone that way and haven't won the world cup since. etc.

Dave Merrington's theory of lack of effort at Exeter upset the guys no end but perhaps it gee'd them up a bit. No such accusations at Tranmere so why do we often dominate yet now score.. What is wrong.. doesn't something need a tweek..

I'm sure Pards will find that "Game plan" he needs or bit of mongrel!!

No one seems keen on a dof that's pretty clear. I did have a good laugh down under when Clive Woodentop got appointed at Saints and woodent want that sort of appointment again..

An answer from within must be found - how to beat these teams that we leak or give away points to.

I do believe Punch will make gaps and maybe David Connelly will find his target when chances are created.

Posters here should all chip in with ideas and thoughts.. it is supposed to be a fun and interesting thread chatting about our fav team.

Loose ideas may attract a bit of stick but it's good to read peoples opinions. Cheers
