Southampton will not give up yet says Alan Pardew

ALAN Pardew insists Saints will not give up on their play-off ambitions despite their 2-1 defeat at Tranmere.

On a day when Huddersfield lost and Millwall only drew, Saints had a great opportunity to close the gap on the top six with victory at Prenton Park.

Had they won, they would have been 12 points off the top six with two home games in hand.

But defeat left them a further point off the play-offs as they now sit 15 points behind with a game in hand.

However, there are just 13 matches remaining of their League One campaign.

Though Saints could still make it, they will need a monumental run.

Pardew is not giving up hope just yet and is urging his side to get back to winning ways against former leaders Leeds at St Mary’s on Saturday.

He said: “We’ve still got a long way to go and we’ll keep fighting.

“This team is growing and we understand situations like this are going to come and we need to react.

“We’re disappointed because this was a game we wanted to win and we expected to win.

“Unfortunately the events have gone against us, missed chances and not being at our very, very best and the ref did have an influence on the game.

“That happens and you have to accept that as a team and bounce back.

“We have to bounce back against the best team in the league.

“But we proved against Norwich and against Huddersfield that we can beat the best, so we look forward to that.”

Saints fell behind at Tranmere after just three minutes but levelled eight minutes later.

Rovers grabbed a late winner via a controversial penalty.

“I didn’t think we were too bad in the first ten minutes but we just shut off from a set piece,” said Pardew.

“You can go through a game and look at scenarios but there were one or two just below their best and you have to ask yourself why that was and that’s my job.

“The boys are very, very disappointed because we put in two great performances and came here and gave a good account of ourselves against tough opposition.

“We didn’t get any breaks or any help from the referee, that’s for sure.”

He added: “Of course they were committed, they want to get out of the relegation zone.

“We dealt with that physical side of it.

“Our quality wasn’t as good as the last couple of games but you wouldn’t have expected it to be as good on a different type of surface.

“But we still created enough chances to have won.”

I didn't think we'd make the plays off at the start of the season, and still don't, regardless of Saturday's result, we had 11 games without a win at the start of the season, for me this season has been about consolidation and staying up, everything else (including Wembley) is a bonus

Keep the faith!
Where's Dan when you need him?
Just seen BBC highlights - we had our chances again, but...
No blame on anyone associated with the club - believe me playing at the next level will be fine, but I like League 1.
It's proper football grounds and pubs for the fans on awaydays. Forget the idiots at Tranmere (they turn up most weeks) but they don't spoil it for me. I have a good day out in any event - but it's fantastic when they win.
Come on AP we know we can win at home - let's focus on ugly 1-0's away from home until the end of the season!

I think the rest of this season is going to be very exciting. Sure we can all say the play offs are no longer achievable but does anyone really believe that?? I certainly don't. Anyone who watches Saints regularly knows AP has built a team capable of beating any one in this league. . So lets keep the pressure on. . . keep expectations high and take one game at a time. One way or another we are in for a great run in. Beat Leeds on Saturday and everyone will be looking over their sholders at us again. . . We can do this. . . COYRS!!!

I agree that we should keep focused on what this season has been about - survival and improvement. With no wins in 11 and no real stars at the start of the season, the play offs was never going to happen. But it is important that we beat clubs like Leeds at home and get some 'ugly' wins away before the season ends. With a full pre-season and a settled team, next season should be great. I just hope we do not do anything stupid and sack AP for not making the play offs.

St.David says...
5:13pm Mon 8 Mar 10

APs job will be safe if we have a good run in. NC and ML are business men and it is clear to everyone that AP has spent well and built a quality team. Your right. . . with a full pre season and a settled team we will be the force in this league if we are still here. Most important thing is keep this team together and keep AP. The five year plan is well on track.

We have done so well to be where we are. We could have disappeared. Understandably as the play-offs became a possibility (even if a far-off one in reality) we all raised our expectations. Those expectations need to be managed otherwise the demand upon Pardew and the players will be unreailstic an dthere will be a an undeserved backlash.

Give praise where it is due - firstly to the new owner and the manager and players . Then give the manger and team time. Don't fall into the QPR trap. I have little doubt that another season in divison one building for the Championship would not do us any harm, provided that we hang on to the best players.

It has been so wonderful to see Saints play such beautiful fgootball at Norwich and then at homne to Walsall and Huddersfield. When we have disappointments please don't forget the joy those performances delivered.

Patience will deliver. Impatience could destroy.

Off topic I know but watching the football league show at the weekend I couldn't believe the standard of the pitches even in the Championship they are a disgrace. These are "professional" organisations but most of the pitches are awful. Surely the league should set a minimum standard for pitches to be met as part of the clubs license to be in the FL? I don't know why I have never noticed it before maybe it was all the talk of the state of the pitches saints have been playing on.

Spot on guys. Last week's home game was the best home display I have seen against a so called decent team in our league for a long time. The Swiss are not stupid and AP has done a fine job. With what is likely to fall out of the Championship we will have nothing to fear next year if we are still in L1. I see the 5 year plan as very achievable and hopefully with the same management team, the players are all playing for each other and AP has not make a duff purchase yet.

If we beat Leeds and then Swindon, that would make us 10 or 11 points off the play offs with 11 games left, seeing as noone else of interest is playing when we play Swindon. Its do-able considering some of the away pitches should dry up during March and April.

While there is a slim chance we hang on to it and back the team all the way. That has always been the way.

If teams us leak points then we'll take that too.

Their is a difference in driving for success and realistic expectation. As fans we drive the team week in week out urging them along...

You know when you're a fan each Monday morning because when we win you feel a million bucks, light as air and the week looks bright ahead. When we lose everything is shiiite innit? Can't help that it's in the blood.
Some on us are still felling that way after dropping three at the weekend but come match day we'll be up for it.

It's Tuesday morning here, still stunned and finding it hard to be honest.. fuelled not only my the ref but by Merrington stirring old wounds from Exeter effort comments again at the start, poor descriptive commentary from Chris Temple who never gives comments on what's going on in the midfield battle and build up, and from missed chances and slipped moments.

Pards said we just lacked that little bit of quality to put the chances away. In other words they bloody missed again and leave us gutted.
The "wayward ref" and "different pitch" comments are part of this league what else can he say lol "we fluffed again"?

Pards himself said last week promotion this season would probably be too soon and that another season learning how to win in L1 will make them a better unit better able to avoid being spat out by the championship.

At the start of the season when so many people were decrying our chances saying we'd relegated and that safety would be our only hope.. the optimistic fans always knew we'd go close...very close.. but may not do it in one.

Pards and the lads will make a good go of it, we are grateful and solid. Now lets thrash Leeds and get on with learning how to beat seven bells out of the teams lower than us.

Maybe I was a bit harsh, but I just wish you chaps could hear what the players REALLY think about the joe in the stands. They do not care a **** about club loyalty.
I formed this opinion when I had the misfortune to be in a 2:30am taxi Q behind a very drunk ex "one of Saints finest"

Dedicate energies to my family?

I take my family with me, it's not what ex-players think of us, it's what we think of them.

Yes I'm a puppet on a string, yes I shout man on, yes I shout go on my son and yes I love it, week in week out, it beats the hell out of shopping on a Saturday.

Your answer shows such passion and commitment that I apologise, and wish you well.

I used to play and watch and ref (junior), but when I heard the comments from he with his 2 front teeth wrapped in a hankie in his top pocket - I turned off forever

No need to apologise,

Football is like marmite, you love it or you hate it, personally I love it and have done since 1969 when my mum took me to my 1st Saints game.

Everyone one to their own, personally I wouldn't nowadays, at any level, respect has gone from the game both professional and amateur.

Go back and take in a Saints game, the buzz you once had will return.

Best posting Harleysaint from you for a while and fair play for the prompt reply.
It really beggers belief to me why some postings get so offensive over nothing.
True Saints supporters should focus on whats important--Saints continuing improvement to their performances.
Right from the start of the season the stated master plan of the management was to get back into the Premiership within 5 years.
So unless there is a dramatic fall-off in performance between now and the end of the season, anything above mid table is no discrace.
I truly hope Saints make it to the play-offs but with my nearly 40 years of making Southampton my home, experience leads me to realistically anticipate a second season in league one.
So let every Saint supporter hold on to their ammunition for that lot down the road, while they're still around.
Roll on Saturday!!

Another slow news day so I guess we better add to this chain of thought.
Really enjoyed the away day experience again on Saturday even though we didn't get the result.
I wonder if the awaydays will be so wonderful when we get back to The Premiership? I don't think we will take as many away to places like Arsenal & Stamford Bridge due to the prices.
Who says only tight people live in Yorkshire? It's not being tight - it's all about value for money. I can afford the odd game here and there - but the prices are ridiculous at such places. Hartlepool seems a much better bet to me!
For one another year at this level and winning virtually every week will be good for my soul...we can still dream of the playoffs, although in reality it may just be a pipe dream!

We need x points to do y etc etc...

We keep going until it isn't possible and we all need to believe that!

It is quite clear we have a good enough squad to give it a punt so why not believe until we mathematically can't do it?

My only worry from this whole thing would be a management fall out between Pardew and Cortese. That would be fatal and the question I may ask Cortese for his radio interview before the Leeds game is 'How well does he know his Saints recent history?'
