22,000 empty seats mean Southampton fans will miss out on Wembley tickets

THOUSANDS of Saints fans will miss out on the chance to watch their team at Wembley because more than 20,000 seats will remain empty for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.

Frustrated executive chairman Nicola Cortese has made calls to Saints’ opponents on March 28, Carlisle, and the Football League to see if there is any way they can increase their 44,000 allocation, which looks set to sell-out tomorrow morning.

But the League has confirmed to The Daily Echo that Saints are unable to get any more tickets due to segregation issues despite the fact that almost a third of the stadium will be empty on the day.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

Saints club spokesman, Jordan Sibley, said: “It seems baffling that we have fans wanting to go to the game who will miss out when there could be as many as 25,000 empty seats at Wembley.

“The response to us reaching Wembley has been fantastic and we are likely to have totally sold out by Wednesday lunchtime, well before any traditional general sale period, which underlines how large the demand for tickets is.

“We believe we could sell at least another 10,000 seats and with such a demand for tickets it is frustrating that it would appear impossible to optimise the venue to fit in as many fans as possible.”

Absolutely spot on - there will be no trouble.
They can mix happily on the concourses & toilets - and put a few rows of seats between the fans.
I think what it boils down to is additional staff they will have to put on and police...it all adds up and costs Wembley money. At 2/3rds full I expect the cost of staging the event makes a profitable day!
Never mind the fans it's all about making more money!
Perhaps we have such a high police rating in the trouble stakes is costing the real fans who want to go to Wembley.
Let's protest and March on the Arch anyway...cash on the day please?

its not about segregation. Its about neutrality. They dont want us to take more than half the stadium's capacity because it would seem like a home game for us. The final must be played at a neutral venue so we cant have more than half. Just like they cant. Its irrelevant that there are 20000 seats empty. The only reason they'll be empty is that carlisle dont have a big enough fan base.

Isnt it a bit hypocritical of the Echo to be reporting on Saints fans frustration at not getting tickets, but the Echo is then offering tickets in a competition, which is obviously a ploy to increase paper sales!! How did the Echo get hold of these pairs of tickets and are they going to make sure they go to Saints fans who havent yet got a ticket for the final? The answer to the latter question is "obviously not" I imagine!

Most of the 'empty seats' in question are the Club Wembley season ticket holder seats. The owners of these seats have an option for the game and can buy as many tickets as they want. It is for this reason that these areas are not opened up fully as blocks for fans. These seats are quite exclusive. They are larger, padded, with more leg room, so don't go on general sale the same way half the Itchen is corporate seating at St Mary's and that is never on general sale. It's a very strict no team colours rule (like our corporate in the Itchen) as well. Don't like it? write to the FA to ask why they designed the place like that!

But thats a load of nonsense to be honest as Carlisle have taken an allocation of less than 30,000 so we will outnumber them anyway !

YAY.. lets bring up the ticket debate again!!!!

Maybe now people will think the 1 person 1 ticket rule should have applied?.
Now people who did attend the 2 legs won't get a ticket because season ticket holders (not all gossie) have taken them all.
No one is blaming them for doing so, but the tickets are going to people who would rightly be at the back of the queue.
Thats all i'm going to say this time.

I don't understand why they need 25,000 seats to segregate fans? Surely when they built Wembley they knew that half of the fans would be from one team and half the other? At the FA Cup Final, will they leave 25,000 empty seats to segregate fans? Who cares if Carlisle don't have enough fans to fill it, I feel sorry for anyone saints fans who will miss out on this.
p.s. don't think JP final is included in the wembley season ticket...

I suspect many Saints fans have purchased seats from the Carlisle allocation anyway so segregation is a joke, we are not noted for causing trouble with teams that are a long way away with no axe to grind. But surely it does not make business sense to have empty seats, imagine if Ryan Air or easyJet had that sort of policy! If Carlisle had taken their full allocation would we have been given less?

What a load of ol' absolute B.S. all this is, especially by the Football League (and the FA)! If it was the U.S, no problem! "YES sir! CAN DO Sir!" But poor ol' Britain? Oh, no! "Well you see, we can't do this, and we can't do that, and oh, we don't want to upset this and that, and oh, they'll only tear the place down if we allow the opposing supporters to get too close. Oh dear no."

No wonder we haven't a clue about dynamic, business promoting strategies in this country!

Pathetic, ALMOST beyond belief!

IMO SAINTS did not think through properly the allocation of tickets for the JPT final. Unfortunately, there will be alot of supporters at Wembley who have been to only one game this season the MK Dons game at SMS and have not been to another game this season and other fans who find it difficult to get to mid week games because of distance, work etc. and have attended several games this season will miss out - how is that fair? They should have operated a system similar to that in 2003 for the game in Cardiff whereby you must have attended at least five games I think from memory.
I hope the Club have made a note of the unfairness that has occurred with the allocation of tickets for this final and will allocate tickets differently, to reward regular attendees if we do make the play-offs.
I am writing this as a STH who has tickets, but just feel sorry for real fans who are going to miss out by the Club choosing one mid-week game which had reduced ticket prices as qualification for the Wembley game - shame on them.

Typical of all that is wrong with the game.....our national stadium leaving seats empty, rather than sell tickets to supporters is just a joke, and indicates just how low ordinary supporters are regarded – they prefer the rich elite to be catered for, and I never thought I’d be in agreement with Keano, but the prawn sarny brigade are taking over……and what can we do about it, ferkall that’s what…..there are never empty seats during any of the major finals, so the segregation argument doesn’t really hold much truck, so sell as many seats as you can to support the Saints…..

Not holding out much hope of getting a ticket tomorrow, before having to book a hotel, if there are any rooms left nearby. At least I'm on a late shift at work so can try to get a ticket before then.

When I was at the 2003 Cup Final I got tickets through somebody at Hartlepool Utd, due to their FA allocation. That meant I was in a "Neutral" area, however it was full of Saints & Arsenal fans, and a stupid welshman called Craig Bellamy.

The atmosphere is rubbish, the pitch is rubbish, the prices are far to high, half the pitch is in shadow if your watching on tv....i could go on.... like you can get to Wembley for a FA Cup SEMI final, rather than the FA Cup being all about the final, the walk out onto the pitch from the tunnel with the roar of the crowd thundering roung the stadium...no to me the magic has gone; they screwed up, all they have now is a big stadium, with loads of empty seats, where people cant't be bothered to get back to them in time for the start of second half. They should have completely renovated and expanded the old Wembley, kept the original design... like the Germans did with the Olympic stadium in Berlin. if ever a nation had a reason for knocking their old one down, they did; now they have possibly the most beautifull stadium in the world, a fans stadium!!, with the possible exception of the Arena Mineirao in Brasil.......

I'm sure you're right ExpatRomseySaint, but how is it we never hear of such a large segregation at other competitions that are played at Wembley.
Given that ticket touting is illegal and may well be strongly policed on the day, I would have thought that that is the only way supporters from any club could otherwise take up any available seats.

All these so called fans who are bleating that they can't get tickets for Wembley are the ones that say they either cannot afford season tickets or cannot go to midweek games,so are not on the database. It was stated on the OS website about going to the MK Dons game and getting yourselves on the database.
These same people would then be willing to pay out £50 odd for a ticket and £25 coach fare for one match.
The true supporters are the ones with season tickets and the ones that try and get to a few games a season if they cannot afford a season ticket. At least they are on the database

It will be interseting to see how many people with tickets for Wembley will actually be at all the league games for the rest of the season.
We should be getting 32,000 per game from now on.
Instead of writing to Johnstone's and the FA to get more tickets allocated for one game,we should be getting at people to come to SMS every week and not try to jump on the bandwagon for one game

At least they are on the database It will be interseting to see how many people with tickets for Wembley will actually be at all the league games for the rest of the season. We should be getting 32,000 per game from now on. Instead of writing to Johnstone's and the FA to get more tickets allocated for one game,we should be getting at people to come to SMS every week and not try to jump on the bandwagon for one game
Bang on! That is the main thing here, all us STHs want to see the Chapel end and corners filled from now on, give Markus and Nicola the incentive to fully back their "baby" and see it through to the Prem. Northam Stand...keep up the good work! Itchen (north)...get us lot in front of you on their feet and screaming too. As for the Kingsland...stop whining about the rest of us and help the elderly couple next to you to their feet and encourage them to clap and sing!! The Chapel showed against Huddersfield and Walsall that they have it in them when the numbers are great! We can average more than Norwich (25k) if recent sales are anything to go by...now COYR!!

A lot of people complain they cannot afford season tickets or cannot afford to go to a few games but are willing to pay over £75 each(including travel) for one game, because it is at Wembley.

Ask them by email few weeks back about a database query , as I take my 11 year old son to matches when I can (Live in Lincolnshire so dont get to go that often). Was told even though I always buy two tickets one adult & one junior that Im on the database but he is not so they told me I could buy one on the 10th March then buy his when they go on general sale. Dont think he would forgive me if I went on my own and I certainly wouldnt buy him a ticket and then have to split up from him for the match (well wouldn't of been any available anyway by the looks of it). Think me and him will have our own little wembley at home in front of the box with half time nibbles etc... spend the money on a new saints shirt or 2 next year ;-)

Why do you think Wembley has such a large capacity.
It is a one off game... A final..A special occasion.
Why is the concept of more than usual numbers of fans wanting to watch this one, so bemusing to you.
Maybe because you watch so many games , they have become monotonous for you?.
Maybe you don't see it as a big occasion and would happily stand there with 20000 familiar faces safe in the knowlege that no one else is trying to muscle in on your club.
Glory hunters...its the JPT ffs.
Its more a celebration of how we have done this year after the past 18 months of ****.
People find the extra money for things like this, because it happens maybe once a year?.
If you go to church every sunday , would you think bad of wedding guests?.

not sure if it will get any where but below is an email that i just sent to sky sports news hoping that maybe they will highlight on there program

you never know lol

good evening

dont know what you can do, but was hoping you could use sky sports news to highlight that that so many saints fans will be missing the final due to the stupidity of the fa/football league. we have an allocation of 44,000 but this will be sold out by lunchtime tomorrow and could easily sell another 10,000 tickets, with Carlisle only selling around 20,000. but the fa/football league say that we can't have more due to crowed segregation!!!!! which many saints fans find a joke, do we really need 25,000 seats of segregation for a saints vs Carlisle match??? its not a saints vs pompy game.

please help us saints fans to highlight this stupity through your sky sports news channel

kind regards

Surely, rather than disputing who the real fans are, we should be celebrating the fact that despite being in League One we have so many people supporting the Saints still? After falling from the Prem I thought a lot of fans would support other teams, but fair we have sold out our allocation.

i do think that some people have overshot their allocation, which is slightly unfair. Its just really impotant that people who do manage to get tickets are genuine Southampton fans, who go there to support the team, not just for a trip to Wembley. If it is just a trip to Wembley, watch an England game but please get the tickets to Saints fans who are desparate to go!!

As for not turning up every week, there are numerous reasons people may not go. They might not be able to afford it (its true especially if you have got a family to care for), there may be child care commitments, people might have work, some people may be totally knackered by the time the weekend comes. As for buying MK tickets some people might not have been able to make that game. What if you work nights?

Why is there always fights as to who is a real supporter on these forums? For a change can people just support the team regardless? Stop bickering and support the team and show Markus what great fans we actually are.

COYR!

An interesting point - are we being wound up about nothing? Will everyone get a ticket if they want one? Suppose we will have to wait and see tomorrow. If they do sell out and the FA continue with this (apparently) ludicrous PR own goal, then are we not duty bound to expose it?
Fortunately for me, I have my ticket, but if there really are going to be 22,000 seats empty because of segregation reasons, then I for one feel that the FA need to be publicly shamed for their attitude. Personally, I don't care whether people want to come because they are season ticket holders, or whether they will only attend the one match at Wembley, its such a great day out, why should they be deprived.
So, if this bizarre situation plays out as predicted - demand for ticket not being met because the FA think there should be 22,000 seats empty for segregation purposes, then lets get moving - e-mail the FA, e-mail your MP, ring up 606 in Saturday, can the Echo gets us some national publicity, what do Johnson Paints think about this dreadful situation ...
Ah well, if tomorrow comes and there are tickets left unsold, I will have to retreat back into my shell. If not, lets get going and expose the FA for what they are.

Glad to see its all harmony on here tonight, do like the quiet nights in.
Slugger, the numbers you were worrying about.
12000 sth = 24000 tickets.
MK Dons game 30000, minus 12000 sth, assuming they all went = 18000 tickets, plus the away game. That lot adds up to between 42 and 43000.
The ticket allocation was never going to be enough.
I think the distrubing thing is though that some families have been entitled up to 10 tickets. How many of those tickets have been sold on at high prices on e bay or to ticket touts.
They are the ones who are a disgrace, not the people who have got tickets but rearely go.
The simple thing in future is to buy a half season ticket for £160, which pays for itself after 7 games.

Many will have been allocated to the Ticketing Agencies and given that I am entitled to just one based on my ticket and purchase record,I shall be using that source to enable me to go and be with a good mate of mine. Probably have to pay £6 over the odds but what the heck. My mate had a trial for SFC when he was 17 but didnt cut it.
Has anybody got a problem with me taking a YIDDO to the final?

well put, I remember some very sparse crowds last season. Not even 10,000 turned up for the 1st JPT game against Torquay back in October. The Football League probably don't want the hassle of the extra policing costs to allow us more tickets.

So, can we see a lot more season ticket holders next season then?

I don't want to hear any more wingers about how unfair it is as they all have the opportunity to buy season tickets. And don't give me the "its too expensive" because they allow you to buy them interest free over 6 months. Not only that, its a much cheaper way than buying on a game to game basis.

As for not being on the database, well its not exactly new. There's been plenty of opportunities since the last 'unfairness uproar' (when we went to Cardiff) to get on it.

Last count Carlisle still had 5000 unsold tickets, and they are unlikely to sell them.
Already many Saints fans have been buying off there ticket office, so there will be a mix of fans together.
Between Saints and Carlisle still 9000 tickets left. Should be enough for everyone.

Rubbish, Carlisle have taken far fewer tickets than us anyway. We were allocated 44000 which will be double the number of Carlisle fans.
One club is not allowed more than 50% of the total stadium capacity for a game at a neutral venue... Doesn't anyone understand that?
I'm sure you're right ExpatRomseySaint, but how is it we never hear of such a large segregation at other competitions that are played at Wembley. Given that ticket touting is illegal and may well be strongly policed on the day, I would have thought that that is the only way supporters from any club could otherwise take up any available seats. I'd be interested to hear yours or anyone else's thoughts.
As I originally stated, segregation is not the issue. It's a neutral game at a neutral venue. It's simple - the powers that be will not allow Saints to have an allocation of more than 50% of the stadium capacity. Competition rules...

I tell you whats doing my head in, 'fans' who have tickets and say, 'well it doesn't matter about general sale tickets, because the people who want them will just be going cos it's Wembley! Rubbish! I'm on the database and have been to 10 away games this season (i rarely go to homes because of the distance - manchester), yet i want to go with my elderly dad, who has supported southampton a lot longer than some people who are shouting their mouth off, yet i obviously want to book to seats together but i unable to do so because of the restrictions! So do i not count as a real fan? I'm sure there are many other people in my boat who want to book 2 tickets. Fair enough if i was with a mate, but i'm not gonna leave my dad sat on his own! So the extra tickets are important, they are not just for 'woodwork' fans!

The youngest are 16 years old, and will be playing Saturday afternoon fottball in France before we get a ferry Saturday night to arrive in the Uk Sunday 287th March. We will be going to the final, but only after going to Carlise to get tickets!!! Don't tell me I am not a true fan because I don't have a season Ticket.
Unlike most of the moaners, i have been to evey match saints have played at Wembley, including the 1976 cup final. Now tell me the ticket allocation is fair. I wrote to the club when the tickets where first released with my circumstances, got no reply, except a Q an A on the club web site saying foreign fans wait till the general sale which will never come.
Lets hope we don't have any crowd problems because of this. i wonder how many other saints fand will be in with the blues?

I don't normally stick up for STH although I am one, but I will now.
Last season when during the dark times our crowds were down to just 14000, minus away fans. 9000 of those fans were STH who stood firm and supported their team whilst others either stayed away through protest, or couldn't be bothered to go.
I think it is great that 44000+ want to go to Wembley, and that in Lg1 we are getting over 20000 inside sms, and full houses for the more attractive games, but please don't keep knocking STH because they are the core of any club. Many struggle to put the money together to get their ticket and go without other things to afford them.

It was a joke, refering to the fact that sanitary towels and placed in and around the vagina.
You are right to defend the thousands of season ticket holders though, without them we would have folded long ago.
As with every situation though the few give a bad impression.
I do suspect some people on here just claim to be season ticket holders in order to gain some kind of credability.
Didn't mean any offence to you Gossie , you are a great example of a dedicated intelligent fan.

So being a ST makes you a better fan?
I've never heard so much rubbish in all my life - never owned one and never needed to!
In actual fact fans like me give more to the club per game than a STH - due to early bird discounts and alike.
Let's go back to The Dell - when ST's were restricted to the upper East & West Stands - how many then 6,000 STH?
I do not consider a STH to be any bigger fan than the majority of other fans - just that they have the cash to stump up a years money all at once. I understand there were finance deals too making it even easier to become a ST too, but why bother? Oh yes I know why "TO SAVE MONEY" - what good fans you are!
The black days of the back end of last season, I turned my back on SMS and Rupert Lowe's Business Plan. Starving him of the cash eventually decided his fate, and we almost lost our club. But true to my word I returned the first game after he left, and bought tickets for the remaining games even though I couldn't attend - so don't make out it's the ST's that we owe for saving the club! The rest is history.
Can't we just draw a line in the sand and agree we all follow The Saints - and none of us our SUPER fans because we have a ST?

What a farce!! Just got through to the ticket office after an hour on the phone to be told that I can only have 1 ticket as I hadn't registered the other 3 members of my family when I'd bought 4 tickets to league games. Told the jobsworth that I'd never been told it was necessary. No I don't want to go without them, as they've been as regularly as myself. Looks like my money will go to Sky instead. Very disappointed in the club's response to the loyalty we've shown them in the bad times.

I have a season Ticket, so I must be a 'super fan'? No I am a super fan because I go to the games, and make a lot of noise for the team. As it happens, I think the 2 tickets for ST holders was a mistake, I assume because the club had underestimated the passion of the Saints fans. It clearly won't be repeated, but I think it is time to stop having a go at ST holders whose decision it was not. I note that the Leeds game is not yet a sell out, so let's hope that those last few thusand tickets are sold before Saturday and we can show L1 what they can expect next season.
Talking of next season, I hope that if we do not go up, then Leeds, Charlton and Norwich go up. Looking at the teams coming down, Peterborio', Plymouth and AN Other, the teams will be weaker next year than this.

A Saints fan is a Saints fan - full stop, being an STH doesn't make you a better class of fan in the support stakes. The fact that you can afford to buy one does give you an advantage when it comes to purchasing tickets for the big events but I am sure that wasn't the reason that you bought it. There has to be some sense of fairness in ticket distribution and a free for all would have found too many tickets in the wrong hands, even less chance of genuine fans getting one. You have 18 days left to get one, whatever way, there are bound to be a few doing the rounds. If anyone has a spare one this forum would be a good method to find a genuine case.

The season ticket debate is getting a bit boring. I am a season ticket holder the reason being, i got sick to death of trying to get tickets each week when we were in the higher leagues and when we hit rock bottom i was relieved in a way as i was able to get tickets every single week no problem. I therefore, purchased 2 season tickets at excellent prices this season and will cling onto them for dear life for seasons to come. The two season tickets cost me about 90.00 over 4 or 5 months and worth every penny..

I must have posted this several times but the empty 20,000 seats are in a middle tier that are owned by the Club Wembley England season ticket holders of Wembley Stadium. Saints and Carlisle already have reached the safe limit of people for the lower and upper tiers. If the Echo can't do it's maths it just stirs up this rubbish! Sure fire way of going? Find a Club Wembley seat holder and ask nicely for them to get you a ticket. They buy as many as they want. The FA designed the stadium that way and that is the way it is. It sucks but there you go.

Thought I would add my two penneth in. I have been thinking about the comments on here about STH and non-STH stating the case about what is a true/loyal support etc and also the Wembley ticket problems. To me a true saints fan, is a fan that not only commits their heart to the club but also makes a regular financial commitment (or has made in the past, perhaps your health does not allow you to go to games now etc) in some way to the club (and I am not talking about business people buying shares), even it's not a season ticket or a matchday ticket (perhaps because you don't live in the area or in the country), it could be a shirt, it could be a match program, it could be a scarf, it could be a book, it could be a subscription to SaintsTV. Listening to match commentary on the radio or watching them on telly for free is NOT supporting your club, when that is all you can be bothered to do (with the exception of those previously mentioned). I was sat at my seat in the area final against MK Dons and there were a row of people behind me (who didn't look like they were struggling to pay their way in life, nicely suntanned etc) had never been to the stadium before! I always support english clubs in the Champions League, I watch each of those games on TV and 'support' the likes of Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal does that mean I support those teams.... no! Money and work commitments aside, if Saints get back to the premiership will they have more season ticket holders than they do now? YES..... but why? and why were they not season ticket holders when we were in League 1? I am a STH and would be even if we were in the conference. On the Wembley issue I wish people would stop moaning about this and take a step back.... think about the Man U fans who get 70000+ gate most weeks, I do not know what the split of STH but I reckon it is above any Wembley allocation they get when they go to Wembley, therefore a lot of true Man U fans miss out simply because Wembley aint big enough and must be even more sickening when they see the empty seats on the tv after half time whilst the prawn sandwich brigade spend 10 minutes getting back to their seats, if they bother to come back out at all. Perhaps if we had more through the turnstiles on a regular basis we would have had a larger allocation to start with? (who knows?). What is wrong with Wembley in my opinion is this whole concept of the Club Wembley ticket holder, what is that all about, it has nothing to do with the ordinary fan and that sucks! How many CWTH will be going to the JPT?

Completely agree! We all know that some people are not in a position to get to SMS regularly because of finances, work/family commitments or because they simply live to far away but that is life and I am in a fortunate position where I live locally and can afford a STH, so I choose to buy one and watch the team I support through good and bad times. I do not believe that the 20000+ ALL have financial or personal commitments that stops them from coming to SMS regularly!

My mates company has Club Wembley season tickets and the only game that is excluded is the JPT!!!
However as with all Club Wembley season ticket holders he gets an option to buy the seats so he'll be there, along with me and several of my other friends! Oh yes, I'm sure we'll be very comfy with our padded seats, armrests and extra leg room. hahaha. It's not what you know, how many home games you attend or whether you registered at the semi-final, It's WHO you know in life that counts, my friends!
Try being a bit nicer about it. Some have missed out here! I too have gone through this option as it was too good to miss and I live and work in Wembley and was unable to do any JPT matches and am not an ST holder so was in none of the ticketing bands.
