Only one question mark over Saints

BOSS Alan Pardew has claimed there is “only one question mark” against his home specialists.

Dan Harding’s winner against Leeds in front of over 30,000 at St Mary’s ensured Saints notched up their seventh straight home league win.

“There’s only one question mark against us now and that’s consistency,” insisted Pardew, below right.

“That’s the next thing we need to tick off because that’s what wins you leagues.”

Saints host sixth placed Swindon at St Mary’s tomorrow in a game they need to win.

They will still be 13 points adrift of the Wiltshire side with a game in hand if they do.

And Saints chairman Nicola Cortese again said at the weekend that the gap between Saints and the top six is too big.

You can only beat what's put in front of you - and let's hope we can do it again.
A win reduces the deficit to 13 points with a game in hand. - 10 points in 10 games - is that achievable?
If (and it still a very big IF) we can win every game there is a chance - but others will have to drop points. Last day blues against Southend may just be our undoing...but I don't think so somehow.
So say we do - who do you fancy over 2-legs? And then what about the final? I'd take on any of the top six over 2-legs - but on a one off I'd like to avoid Colchester.

Absolutely, All the other games that Southampton have been leading up to this game, I have been counting down the days until tomorrow finally arrives and we can get started. I have been trying to explain this to all my friends who just don't get it. The season starts tomorrow, I'm in total agreement with this excellent post. More of the same please.

it is achievable but are future is down to other sides having a meltdown.all we can do is try to win every game from swindon to the end of the season.
i still think another season in this league will not be a bad thing and may pay us in the long run,a good pre season and instill a culture of winning.
if not we can always bring back branfoot.

Consistency yes, but we also need to learn how to win ugly on crap pitches against teams who put 11 men behind the ball. Only then can we count ourselves as true contenders for promotion, be it this season or the next!............. :oD

Tick sheet of games..
Leeds - done em - tick one
Swines next should be a good hard game .. hope Soton gets a great crowd out for the night....

The Overseas Platoon will be here as usual... Alan Pardew's Red Army is Marching On, Swines, Dons, Pools, WEMBLEY OUTING, S/Hawks, O's, Charlies, Gas, Wurzels, OA ps, Carlisle, Gills, Shrimps... Our team is better than all of them.
Bring em home Pards... Bring em home.

COYR

ps all those succulent juicy looking trips .. some good Northern Ale and if we don;t quite get there the prospect of following you lots all over the country at silly hours of the morning from NZ......is absolutely bloody wonderful.. but Lets tick em off one at a time and see how the others fair and watch the scales tip.
It's almost like test match cricket 6 an over required on the last day three wickets left and Beefy Botham is next in... wanna bet we won't make it?

I couldn't agree more.
We will need to be more consistent if we are to be considered promotion candidates. At the start of the season I think most of us would have settled for stability and a mid table position. At no stage was a Wembley appearence even considered, but now we're all excited by the advancement the team has made in such a short time, and perhaps getting carried away by the euthoria of this and the performances the team has put in of late. Yes promotion would be fantastic this season, but not a disaster if we miss out. Another season in L1, to consolidated, learn, improve and build for the championship may be the best thing for the team as a whole.

Reaching 76 shouldn't be a problem, its the gap that is, seems everytime we take a stride forward the gap remains.
We need a lot of teams to screw up, the gutting thing would be to finish 7th and 2 points off, then those crappy draws will really hurt.

Is NC suggesting that we are not on par with the top six teams? If so he is talking through the top of his hat. assuming we win the game in hand we have then we would be up there if we had not had the ten points deduction. I would not be upset if we do not go up this season because we have shown that we can beat the best and next season we will win the League. I think this season has been great for us. With gates like we have been having no one but no one will stop us next season. Whatever happened to the five year plan. NC should learn a little patience. If we the fans can do it so can he (we are the club). AP has nothing to feel sorry about he has, is and will do a great job for us. A final message to NC..layoff your manager and let him get on with the five year plan

The one question mark remaining is whether Nicola Cortese is going to stop being an idiot and realise what a star he has in Alan Pardew. If he thinks he can get someone else who could do better then good luck. How many of the team that ended last season played on Saturday? Can anyone recognise the club as it is now from the one that ended last season? How many fans are coming to St Mary's compared to last season? How many of us will say we've had anything other than a ball compared to last season? I admire the way Cortese is turning us into a sound business fit for a bright future. I also admire the way Pardew has turned us into a team I can't wait to see play again and which has given me more football pleasure than I've experienced for nearly a decade or more. Mr. Cortese will be an utter fool to change any of this.

The thing is we are probably the best side in this league. But only on a good pitch. We cannot play away from home.whereas the top six seems to get results at rubbish pitches. If we played every game at sms we would win 90%.I think cortese feels we should be winning away also.

I'm feeling fairly positive about our away chances. Our last two away games were hampered by a truly appalling pitch and then the worst ref I've ever seen (seriously, the guy at Tranmere made the ref from the Leeds game look World Cup standard) so they were freak results. Let's not forget that before those two we beat Norwich away so it's not like we're letting away crowds unsettle us or anything. I think we can still win all our remaining games and if were do that we'll have a great shout of the play offs.

I quite fancy beating Leeds in the final.

So very true, difference is this season we are trying to gun for the playoffs in what amounts to half a season as a new team, a fact no-one can deny,
But next season ,just having a pre-season will be great, and now having worked a lot of these sides out, sure away tactics will be bang on.
Some players just arent suited to the "ploughed fields"that some of these teams get away with, that should be addressed, but how could you police it.
Dont think there is a set standard for a playable pitch is there ? Not at this level anyway.-shame

sorry worried of e sussex but the officials in this league need consistency too and agree with St Retford about away games. If L33ds had sneaked a lucky one at the end we would all be bemoaning the result. The ref had a perfect view of Beechio wrestling Jose to the floor for The Jedi's disallowed goal and gave them a free kick! Watched it on BBC L1 page and it's blatant. Don't start me on the Tranmere penalty! We are in fantastic shape and maybe, just maybe, still in with a shout of the dream season!

Heh - I know what you mean. It's a funny thing but this board is a lot more entertaining after we've just been battered and there are idiots calling for AP's head on a plate and all the non-idots feel compelled to wade in to defend him. When we keep winning everyone is all "Yep, happy with this, carry on," which is less entertaining but that's the price of being good, I suppose.

Talking of which, I went to Old Trafford yesterday and that place is like an absolute library (there was a game on, you understand - it wasn't a stadium tour or anything). People get spoilt rotten by success, so I hope that we all remember these days when we're back in the Prem and never stop singing.

Much has been made of Saints slow start to the season - coming out of administration, need to build a new team/confidence etc. Fair comment. After 10 games we had gained 9 points and stood on minus 1. But how well have we done since then? Here is the top of the league table for all relevant teams since match 10.

Norwich played 26, points 65
Millwall 26, 54
SAINTS 24, 48
Swindon 25, 48
Leeds 26, 45
Colchester 26, 45
Charlton 26, 43
Huddersfield 26, 43
MK Dons 26, 39

If we win both our games in hand on Millwall in second, we'd match them with 54 points from 26 games.

So we're up there with the second best but another step up is needed. January's team strengthening may have to be followed up with some more in the summer.

I think 76 points is too low this season. Colchester and Swindon have averaged 1.8 points each game so far, so if you extend that to the end of the season you have 83 points. We must win everyone of our remaining games to get 83 points. A tough thing to achieve but I believe it can be done, starting Tuesday.

Further to my earlier post, if you extrapolate the top teams form (average points gained per game) since match 10 to the end of the season, the final table would be as follows:

1. Norwich 103 points
2. Leeds 88
3. Millwall 85
4. Swindon 84
5. Colchester 83
6. Charlton 82
7. Huddersfield 74
8= Saints 71
8= MK Dons 71

That would leave a points shortfall of 11 points for a play-off place, almost a point a game. We need to get 2.5 points per game to attain 77 points (that's dropping just 6 points from 12 games - a tall order) and hope that at least one of Millwall, Swindon, Colchester and Charlton tank.

Whilst still hoping for a miracle, I think we should be realistic about our play-off prospects and think more about next season.

Of course, we have a Wembley Cup Final to look forward to. So let's make that a great day - the highlight of our season.

If so , if Pards did go somewhere else, so what?.
We have a good team now,(thanks to him), we ain't going up this year, again thanks to him, and we have time to build for next year if we had a new man.
Plenty of good managers out there, we will go from strength to strength , with or without him.

I listened to the entire Cortese interview and I thought he was excellent in just about every respect. Very open, very honest, answered every question , avoided nothing. He admitted where he had made mistakes e.g. the MK Dons ticker priority for Wembley. He didn’t criticise Pardew at all, said they both were “on the same page” and that there was no problem in the relationship. But he wasn’t kidding anybody that Pardew will be judged by anything other than results in the league.

On his previous statement about not being high enough in the league and how that was more important than the cups, he made the following points, all of which I agree with:

(1)We were in roughly the same position as Norwich and Charlton at the start of the season except we were on minus 10 points. We are now something like 30 and 20 points behind them respectively. And they have done that with no money while we spent £millions. I think he should have allowed for the fact that Pardew had no pre-season and many players and left but , even so, he makes a good point.

(2) Players like Fonte took one step back to take two forward with Saints. They don’t expect to play in the third division for two years. And he went on to say that if a player wants to leave in the summer, then the reality is that they will have to be let go. But he went on to say they will be replaced.

(3) People were getting carried away with the cup runs and he felt that he needed to remind everyone, no doubt including Pardew, that the owners of the club had promotion as their number one priority bar nothing. They were here to get us back in the Premiership within five years and a second year in division three would not help.

Having exacting targets is good, so long as he gives Pardew the chance –which for me means review the situation at Christmas, in time for the January window. So far, Pardew for me has done extremely well from a standing start. All his signings have improved the team and the only negative anybody sensible could hold against him has been some poor away results against poorer teams since Christmas. I do wonder if the 451 that many knocked is not a perfectly good formation away from home against poorer teams – because they usually flood the middle of the park and we don’t as a rule go route one – we need to win these midfield battles.

Cortese’s comments on how to run the club were absolutely spot on – great business sense – too many points to go through here – have a listen.

Great shame that the biggest talking point after such a great team performance and brilliant result was the goon in black. Should have felt elated, and this ref took that away from me to some degree. Never have I seen or heard such unanimous outrage at the performance of a match official, and it was completely justified. He did his level best to stop us from playing football, and was so biased it is unbelievable. The consolation is three points against one of the toughest outfits to beat in this division, and when the anger this man has given me subsides I will be able to enjoy that win a bit more.

As an aside - does anybody have a ticket for Wembley near block 227 (Wembley West) they would exchange for one in block 550. I am separated from my son for the match and obviously it would be nice to be somewhere near to each other for the game. If so, please contact me on 07771 50 88 77

I Couldn't agree more and I saw the Teamtalk post from the Leeds Fan as wel
That was the worst display of refereeing I have ever seen and that even includes the days when I used to play Southampton and Hampshire League football
He was an utter disgrace but I have been saying for months now that we are being punished by the FA to try and keep us in League one for at least another year because we went into administration.
Every game makes me more and more paranoid because we do not get any decisions bar the game against Stockport at home
The FA are conspiring against us and do not like us, look at the Wembley fiasco
We will have to carry on doing it the hard way and score enough goals so as not to be undone by a sh*te decision from a muppet of a bent ref when we are one nil up
COYR!! We can win all our games starting with Swindon even if we have to play against 12 men in every game

Much has been made of Saints slow start to the season - coming out of administration, need to build a new team/confidence etc. Fair comment. After 10 games we had gained 9 points and stood on minus 1. But how well have we done since then? Here is the top of the league table for all relevant teams since match 10. Norwich played 26, points 65 Millwall 26, 54 SAINTS 24, 48 Swindon 25, 48 Leeds 26, 45 Colchester 26, 45 Charlton 26, 43 Huddersfield 26, 43 MK Dons 26, 39 If we win both our games in hand on Millwall in second, we'd match them with 54 points from 26 games. So we're up there with the second best but another step up is needed. January's team strengthening may have to be followed up with some more in the summer. COYR
Further to my earlier post, if you extrapolate the top teams form (average points gained per game) since match 10 to the end of the season, the final table would be as follows:

1. Norwich 103 points
2. Leeds 88
3. Millwall 85
4. Swindon 84
5. Colchester 83
6. Charlton 82
7. Huddersfield 74
8= Saints 71
8= MK Dons 71

COYR
I really enjoy the effort you've made to post like this...love it to bits. I like to check through form, players in and out and and read all the punditts views, then assess or perhaps punt where our strength and weaknesses may be. At the start of the season I thought we'd be 7th or 8th, it's working out that way but for all the wrong reasons... I really thought we'd master the dirt tracks and falter against the football playing sides due to the time it takes for class teams to gel. Pards has them playing much better, much earlier than I thought. His pre-Leeds interview is excellent and lays it down straight and to the point.. it's away consistency that lacks and he indicated that a few top performers at home may get benched if they don't pull finger in the away games... Adam, got a mention as one.. one of his leading lights but took criticism for away play whereas Papa has pleased Pards. Expect changes if they fail again away even with the stars.
He's done so much and come so far and I really want Pards to get the best out of his away teams.. Pressure is there, pressure is good but players must respond to the bit or the crop will get used and maybe the dog tucker van at the end of the season.

COYR lets tick off each game on the sheet.. Leeds tick. Next please.
