Pards hails defensive duo

ALAN Pardew has hailed the “outstanding” partnership that centre halves Radhi Jaidi and Jose Fonte have forged.

Since Fonte’s arrival from Crystal Palace in January, Saints have conceded just six goals in ten League One matches.

The pair shackled the fearsome Leeds duo of Jermaine Beckford and Luciano Becchio in Saturday’s 1-0 win.

And Pardew believes they are good enough to be a strong Championship pairing.

“They have been outstanding,” he said.

“If you’re going to push onto teams like we have and press them, then at the back you need to be comfortable that your two centre halves can deal with whatever strikers are on show.

“Now, we dealt with Beckford and Becchio very, very easily Saturday and we’ve got a different proposition tonight.

“Swindon have two good strikers and they need to deal with them and they’re doing that job.

“Our goal difference is now only second to Leeds and Norwich. That tells you that we’re not only scoring goals, but we’re doing a pretty good job defending too.”

Pardew believes the competition for places that has increased with the arrival of the likes of Dan Seaborne has taken Jaidi’s game up a notch.

“I think the injury to Seaborne has given the opportunity to Radhi to show his true worth,” he said.

“Radhi is a very, very good player, but, when competition arrives at your door you’ve got to step up and Radhi’s done that.

“Fonte is just an outstanding player and the performances he’s put in are nothing more than I expect and that’s why we paid a lot of money for him.

“But we’re going to try and make him better.

“There’s things he can improve on, but they’re an aggressive pair and I think in this division that’s what you need.

“Radhi played 40 games for Birmingham and got promoted.

“Jose played 30-odd games for Palace when they were in the playoff positions, so there’s absolutely no doubt they are good enough for the Championship.”

But it is not just at the back where Pardew has noticed a particular improvement in recent weeks.

He said belief is growing among the players all over the pitch on the back of recent results.

“I think that’s a key thing, because you can have good players and you can see them on the training ground and think, ‘I can compare him with players I’ve had at West Ham, etc, etc’,” explained Pardew.

“But they need to bring it to the playing surface, and of course they have gone up a level in recent weeks if I’m honest.

“Sometimes other players arriving can take the level of players up a bit, like the arrival of Jason Puncheon has taken Adam Lallana’s game up a level. And this is what happens, you feed off each other and it is about belief and momentum.

“Of course if we get a win tonight that will be tremendous momentum for us.”

Doesn't she hail from up Swindon way? I think she has a more striking pair than The Robins!

Can't wait for a joust with Derek from Holbury today, he was a real luvvie.

I wonder what made him want to come back to the forum - oh yes a ticket swap for Wembley! Derek that is something you could have never dreamed of under the old regime.

Live and let live I say - welcome back. We all have differing opinions, which is why we spend so much time on here in debate.

Long live the King - by the way it's not Rupert in case you missed the changes in the summer!

I must admit - things are looking quite rosey at home these days, we must improve our away form on these shocking pitches, but after watching Pompey last night, was quite funny, they were horendous against Liverpool and should have been beaten by more, luckily for them, the 300 fans they took (the pride of the SOuth apparently) had one goal to cheer lol

it's weird,we have all been saying about the pitches recently but i can't remember us having problems on them earlier in the season at places like hartlepool, southend and oldham so i think we are more than capable of winning on bad pitches, maybe we have made too much of a big deal about them and it's affected us mentally. On a different subject swindon have got alot of injuries tonight apparently including paynter and pericard, nice little bonus for us.2 - 0 to saints tonight!

We only need to turn in another performance like the on on saturday to get 3 points Some of our passing and movement was worthy of the CCC at times I do agre that the 2 centre backs handled everything that came at them and gave Davis an afternoon off
Just keep repeating it for another 12 games starting to-night
Luvin it

That's because the pitches weren't bad earlier in the season! It's because of the ice, snow and rain over the winter that the pitches become rubbish. Hopefully with the warmer weather the pitches will get better and we can start winning away again.

if i remember correctly hartlepool had a massive downpour and i remember merrington saying how awful the pitch was but how impressed he was that saints dealt with it,not moaning about it but maybe it doesn't help in the players minds when the manager points it out before nearly every away game, can't be good if you're focusing on the pitch more than the game itself.

Pardew has bought quality players and the training has been more about playing good football...this is why we have been able to break our 3-1 favourite scoreline and start putting teams to the sword...but you can not play good football on rubbish pitches...earlier in the season Saints weren't playing the same level of football they are now but they were probably more direct which is what you need on the bad surfaces.

I think Pardew maybe needs to tinker with the team a bit against these sides so it directs the players more. Maybe it's time to go to our 4-5-1 away with Ricky upfront and Waigo and lallana wide. Keep Puncheon on the bench for later in the game because there's no point in running midfielders when you can't run with the ball. Players like Wotton are more suited to these type of pitches so give him a run out. There are no excuses anymore for AP Saints have the players...he needs to prepare them right and pick the right side for every game!

There are a fair few interesting fixtures coming up in the last few weeks of League 1 and with a following wind I reckon there could be all four play off spots still up for grabs to Saints. It might seem hopeful at first glance but there are some big fixtures. We want Norwich and Leeds to have a storming end to the season. Leeds have to play Millwall, Swindon, MK Dons and Bristol Rvs (all at Elland Road). Norwich have Swindon, MK Dons, Charlton & Bristol Rovers. Thats a potential 24 points that could be dropped to only two teams. With Saints playing Swindon, MK Dons, Charlton and Bristol Rvs, that's another 12 we can gain. Lots of points for the 9 teams above is to lose and all of a sudden that gap, even up to 3rd place, is reducing very quickly. COYR, come on Leeds, come on Norwich!!!!!

As much as I thought that the duo played well, I was a little suprised at how poor Leeds were offensively. If Beckford was trying to sell himself to Premiership clubs, I think he looks little more than an average Championship striker.

Its all well and good saying that , but what if he does pick this team with Wotton etc in it and we get beat.
Surely its better to keep the team as is and let them learn to play on rough surfaces.
What if a pitch starts off ok and we have downpour and it cuts up?.
If a footballer is worth playing , he should be able to play on all terrains.
The right side is a winning team.

I may be very negative but there seems to be a pattern developing of Pardew bigging players up then they let him (and us) down in a big way on the park. I'm not at all confident. Not because i think Swindon are a decent side but because we have a bad habit of trying to annoy our own fans.

Still we can always laugh at p*mp*y to cheer ourselves up :-)

We had some idiot on here from Leeds last week spouting the same rubbish as you. Funny, didn't hear from him after we played them off the pitch on Saturday? I would suggest the pressure is more on you than us. We're not expected to get to the playoffs, you are, therefore the nerves will come from your side not ours. We are indeed a big time club but no need to relive "past glories" as we are very much a club looking forward to bigger and better things. This is quote from a swindon fan.

If Pardew truly believes what he says then he's even more of a plank than I thought. He really isn't a very bright bloke.

A draw would be a good result for both teams - Saints aren't in the playoff race in any case.

I reckon we'll win it 2-1 but fairly comfortably. Sounds like they're not preparing properly.

Saints, my second team, to go up next season or the one after - as long as they get rid of AP.

It's ok to think your team are going to win but to say comfortably against our team at st mary's at the moment is just infuriating and shows a lack of knowledge when it comes to football.

I hope Pards will caution the team against overconfidence tonight.
We drew with Wycombe after stuffing Norwich, lost to Tranmere after thrashing Huddersfield, so maybe the players do sometimes get a bit carried away with all the 'best team in the league' stuff.
Swindon deserve some respect anyhow, they're having an excellent season.

Getting ready to go now, must beat the traffic. Think it will be a very close game tonight, a tight 5-0.

I suggest some of you take a reality check - Swindon are where they are because they deserve to be. You have no hope of catching them. Here is a gentle reminder of the last encounter where it seems you were played off the park - http://www.thisisswi ndontownfc.co.uk/lea gueone/news_articles /4552517.FULL_TIME__ Swindon_Town_1_South ampton_0/
reality, i was at that kennel you call home,
you tore apart a team that was still bieng assembled ,
at a club recovering from the darkest hour in it`s history,
but you only scored 1

differnt team now,
different club now , with a were on the up kinda vibe.
as you`ll see when you come down tonite,
PLEASE TRY AND TARGET HARDING TONITE AS YOU DID THEN,

YOU`LL FIND A DIFFERNT TEAM IN FRONT OF HIM THIS TIME ,
AND YOU WILL BE PUNISHED FOR LEAVING THOSE GAPING HOLES AT THE BACK AND WIDE ,
WHICH IS EXACTLY EWHAT YOUR POST IS , WIDE

OF THE MARK THAT IS

Yes a few embarrassed Soton supporters today...... I thought some may have learnt from others about shouting from the roof tops as the building underneath is collapsing.
I might add some have been gracious in defeat and for those I respect and wish them good luck.
