Southampton 0 Swindon Town 1

Click here to make this page automatically refresh

SAINTS face another of the teams firmly entrenched in the top six this evening in the shape of Swindon Town.

It is yet another stern test for Alan Pardew's side and the current run of fantastic home form.

Apologies for the lack of updates during Saturday's match - this was due to connection problems.

KEY EVENTS

• 87: Simon Ferry sees red after being shown a second yellow of the game.

• 73: Rickie Lambert hits a curling shot from 25 yards that beats the keeper but hits the bar.

• 56: Swindon goal. Charlie Austin rounds Kelvin Davis and turns into the net. Saints 0 Swindon 1.

• 45: Half time. Saints 0 Swindon 0.

• 45: After the keeper pushes out Wayne Thomas’ far post header Morgan Schneiderlin’s follow-up is cleared off the line.

• 24: Lee Barnard turns home after Dean Hammond’s effort from the edge of the area rebounds off the post but he is flagged offside and the goal ruled out.

• 20: A very scrappy start to the match. Rickie Lambert’s early free kick that brushed the roof of the net and Charlie Austin's shot across goal but wide are the only pieces of attacking quality from either side so far.

• 00: Kick-off is at 7.45pm.

Swindon Town

It's games like this that Saints excel in...i'd be more concerned if we were playing against one of the teams in the bottom half.

That said i'm sure Saints will have to be on their guard but so will Swindon...we should put them under more pressure from the start than they will on us. Lets hope they crack!

Tony from Liberia here; looking forward to another win, however it comes - to (mis)quote Gandalf, all we can do is to do the best we can with the number of games still alloted to us. Also to quote Gandalf, and aimed at our midfielders closing down the Swindon playmakers - "They Shall Not Pass"!!!! And finally, to quote Gandalf again, I've got a ticket for Wembley and I'm coming back on an emergency visit, so - look for me on the morning of the 28th day"!!!!!! Say goodbye to any slim hopes of reaching the play offs this season. Saints are more points off reaching the top six than they are from dropping in to the bottom four! Concentrate on the painting Wembley red on March 28th and avoiding relegation.
Re-group for promotion next season when Saints start without a 10 point handicap.

Could you tell they strung 16 passes together if he didn't say it? I do believe he's anti Alan Pardew and can't resist digs but we must have the picture from both sides or we don't have anything at all. At the end Dave gave a huge plug for Alan and the way the team has progressed this year and the Solent team roundly and soundly put down every anti-Pardew text which by the way were out numbered by a huge margin.

In sport we must be able to have the heart to know when we were genuinely out played... but we were only listening in so let's wait and hear what the fans from the game have to say... by thought is that they'll agree with Dave like it or lump it.

Just got home very disappointed, the team were well off the boil tonight and everyone seemed to be having an off day. The passing was poor as we gave the ball away too easily. We ran out of ideas and it was just not going to be our night which was summed up when Lambert hitting the post. Still who wants to get to the play offs, next year we'll win the league! OHH what a sore looser. I do believe that Leeds bought nearly 3,700 to our ground so nearly 300 more than you and 3 times the distance, but then you are no where near as big as Leed are you. HO HO HO 1-0

Would love just to hear a commentary, and not hear about text messages and other carp that the pair of them go on about. One time they nearly missed a chance on goal.

It's a long few days now to wait for the next game. Hopefully we get the show back on the road at MK

Yes we are, Austin has just signed a 2.5 year deal and as one of the wealthiest clubs in the country (billionaire owners, we just don't brag unless poked) when we go up, we will have a considerable budget for new players for life in the championship. Davis - Failed to live up to his embarassingly low standards, and his fumbles and failed catches very nearly led to two more Swindon goals. Made one great save in the second half. 5/10.
Thomas - Played a steady enough game. Strong in the tackle. Aggressive in the air. Always looks an inch from a booking. 6/10.
Fonte - Was very unlucky to give away the goal. For the rest of he game he looked his usual unflappable self. 7/10.
Jaidi - Strong in the air, but, as usual, constantly on the brink of giving away free kicks in dangerous areas. 6/10.
Harding - Steady in defence. Hopeless in attack. 6/10.
Puncheon - Although we all thought that Parfoot had finally worked it out on Saturday, Jason was back on the right again tonight. He did his best, but it wasn't until he moved to the left after Swindon's goal that he came into his own. Seems to shoot too often when there are better options. 7/10.
Hammond - Way out of his depth and subbed. 5/10.
Schneiderlin - Strangely out of sorts. 6/10.
Lallana - Once again there are small children throughout the ground who are wondering why they can see that Adam is on the wrong wing whilst Parfoot cannot. Sure enough Parfoot worked it out after Swindon scored, but, as usual, it was too much too late. adam gave his all as ever. 7/10.
Lambert - Either tired or lazy, its hard to tell. 6/10.
Barnard - Seems to have lost the spark he had a few games ago, but deserved to stay on longer than Lambert. 7/10.
Papa Waigo - Unbelievable. Connolly is fit and on the bench, but Parfoot throws on Waigo. If Waigo has ever been more ineffective than this then it must have been an away game. 4/10
Connolly - On paper this looks like Parfoot's best ever substitution. Our worst outfield player off, and our best outfield player on. Sadly, Parfoot got the formation all wrong so it didn't work. Connolly looked a bit rusty, but that is only to be expected after so long out. 6/10.
James - A straight swop for Thomas. Looked a bit rusty, but again, that is only to be expected after so long out. 6/10.

Well what can you say, we just can't beat the crappy little teams.
Swindon supporters did their club proud, about 2000 of them there, about 1700 more than Pompey could manage yesterday.
Everything was against us, the pitch was way to good, and the ref wasn't the usual rubbish, so what chance did we have.
Just one of those nights. Never mind, well done Swindon, you deserved this one just for the effort your team put in. But, if you make the playoffs and go up, I'm afraid you will come straight down again, not good enough by half.
Roll on Saturday, the mighty MK Dons and their half a dozen supporters.

Well done Swindon.

One of the best performances from an away team at St Mary's.

Well organised, loads of energy, 4141 packed midfield. They came for 0-0 and hopefully to nick a goal on the break and that's exactly what they got (with the help of a very rare error from Fonte)

On another night Saints may have won that game by a couple. (once the first one goes in the tactics they employ are rather useless)

If I was frustrated by anything it was the long balls into the box in the last 10 minutes and the fact that we didn't belt a couple at the keepers feet instead.

I also felt that Waigo could have came on a bit sooner. It seemed like his kind of game, scrappy and congested. He seems to react quicker than most in those situations.

On the whole - Just one of those days I guess.

this is the problem we face in this division. Swindon played like it was their cup final. Pack the midfield an throw themselves in the way of everything, teams cant sustain this over a season but they seem to save themselves for us as we are seen as a big scalp..we need to fight fire with fire. When we take the lead we can rip teams apart as they have to open up a bit.

we were not sh1t. I was disappointed too. But their Keeper made some great stops and we hit the woodwork on a number off occasions.

Norwich were pretty good and Brighton hiumble Saints when we did play sh1t. But I cant think off a better performance. The game wasn't a classic but did as well as any away side could hope for at St Mary's

Was at the game tonight and I would say a fair assessment would be that we tried to play our game but came up against a team that were quite obviously extremely well prepared to deal with it. We had our chances, lots of them, like we always do. We are always a threat - however, we rarely got time on the ball, weren't allowed to run, weren't allowed to pass, they made it extremely tricky for us.

I don't want to bash our performance tonight, I think everyone tried to play and we were very very very unlucky - if just one of the 10 or so chances went in, the posts on here would be very different indeed, trust me. In my opinion all credit must go to Swindon and their manager who had the tactics down to a tee.

We must take this on the chin and move on - its not going to go for us every game - the best teams don't win every game.

I am not anti Pardew and pleased with his signings and generally how we play, but why can't we set up like this in our away games and scrap out wins instead of losses and draws, could make the difference next year.

We used to. People complained that we weren't trying to win the games. And quite right too. When you go to places like Exeter the home side are more than happy to draw.

It's not the hardest run in in the world that Saints have, all they can do is go and try and win every match, unlikely but lets go on a long winning run and see where that takes us, let's be bold with attacking football in our last 11 games we've got nothing to lose, and it's been a great and entertaining season given where we were 12 months ago.

Must be like beating Man Utd for them.
No shame last night, just came up against a very well organised team.
A lot of battling players in there , maybe we can pinch a few for next year.
Playoffs were never going to happen, so lets enjoy the rest of the season and the mickey mouse cup to boot.
I still think next year will see the biggest points tally for a promoted club.. being us of course.
We should walk the league next year if we keep this team.
And a return trip to Wembley to defend the Trophy.
Roll on the world cup, and pre season..Exciting times ahead for us SAINTS.. and as Yazz once said.." THE ONLY WAY IS UP...BABY "

Even more embarrasing that its the little clubs second team who got the 3 points .

Grow up - you are taking over the mantle of the Leeds supporters who after 2 seasons in this divisions realised promotion was not a God given right because you THINK you are a big team .
Our (Swindon) performance this season has surprised a few including ourselves.
We haven't spent a fortune but quietly go about our business with some very good backers who do not go around bragging how rich they are.
Leeds fans were or are despised for their arrogance and laughed at the same time by some, for all the bragging that after 3 seasons they MAY at long last be going up.

Where are the posters that came on our site yesterday with the derisory, inflamatory comments now eh?

"come on our site, you can use the same log in"

Well, here we are, what do you have to say now guys?

Good luck at Wembley, enjoy your day out.

Take heed of other posts, you lot do not want to become the next 'Leeds fans', laughed at by all because your heads are still 2 divisions higher than your actual rightful place in the football league.

I personally think you'll walk it next season, but just in case you don't, please dont harp on about where you think you deserve to be, or how big a club you think you are.

A Saints poster mentioned it earlier in this thread, where were your 44,000 last night? Every game we get around 7K, we all asked where the other 26K are that followed us on our trips to wembley, but thats life eh?

To me, the most arrogant, silly looking fool today is Pardew, the sooner you lot get rid of that deluded muppet the better imho.

As said earlier, good luck, oh and if we do play you next season, which I suspect we will, try and fill our away end next time will you? ;-)

Bollo(ks to that.
You are a little club who are on a good run.

Well even the few hours sleep doesn't hide the disappointment of last nights defeat - I really believed the play-offs were achievable.
Resigned to another season at least in this league so Hartlepool is on again - yippee!
I think someone else has summed up the game. Evenly balanced both teams having chances and a goal to separate them at the end.
I think the team has a mental block, after all as the Swindon fan says it was basically their second string - but they did everything right. Good luck Swindon for the rest of the season - I think you are a bit of a bogey team for us these days - so promotion might be the best option for us to stop your Wiltshire crowing on these pages!
Can't wait to see what Pardew has to say!
Season over then - go through the motions, trot out at Wembley, and a nice summer off? Just wait and see!

Well done to Swindon, they outplayed us at their place and should have won about 6-0 but that was early in the season when Saints were pants. Much improved Saints were unlucky last night but Swindon played very well, the league table doesn't lie at this stage of the season, they are there on merit.
We've still had a great season given the minus 10 and all, and there's still more to come.

Swindon came for a draw, win if they could, and they could. They controled the ball through the center of the park well, switching formations as we have done.
We could not get the ball to stick upfront and they always had an extra man in the center to cover and stop the second ball, the knock down, the inside run.
After we finished changing round ourselves it bacame obvious that they do not like to play too much possetion football, we started winning the second balls and started to look more dangerous.
On a different day luck could have rubbed our way a little better, credit to Swindon for taking their chances well and being a very well organized and composed team.

We lost 6 points in the matches against Swindon. That's a lot.

So,we will not reach the play-offs.

Don't forget we started with -10.It took 19 matches before we were above the relegation zone.

Next year we will certainly become the champion in the first division.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of all the loyal fans who post here, here are my opinions for changes to be made to the team.
A new goal keeper is essential for next year.
Its not the Swindon result that stopped us getting to the playoffs. Think back to the first third third of the season and count the poor reults that we obtained.
The manager must take resposibility for the performance of his team.
He knows teams will be coming to St Marys to frustrate and harry his team. He should be prepared to vary his players more often. Use the large squad he has created. If his scouts had done their homework on teams like Wycombe, Exeter, Tranmere and he had adopted tactics and players to counteract what to expect, then some of the results against lesser teams ( and I don't include Swindon in that category ) then the Swindon result would not have been so important.
If a visiting team is going to play 5 accross the midfield, I don't think you should play 2 ballplayers against them, but include another Hammond type in the middle.
You can then use your ballplayers and speed merchants when you have blunted their spoiling tactics.
imho.

When we take the lead we can rip teams apart as they have to open up a bit.

Luda,I would hazard a guess and say that you could well have a massive head at least a Metre wide and very similar to some of the Leeds fans who think they have a god given right to win everything. Tiny clubs like ours have real fans who are more realistic. I shall have great pleasure telling my grand kids that we did the double over a team that once graced the higher leagues, but Giant Killing , I think your deluded.
